I could be wrong I don't think dark magic is exclusive to alicorns, after all twilight used it before she was one.

There hasn't been all that much official explanation into the various forms of magic (to my knowledge anyway), but we've seen that dark magic has mainly been used to corrupt, which is kinda what had to happen to the potion. But yeah dark doesn't necessarily mean evil, just the antithesis of light, the same way Celestia and Luna balance each other. But still I don't think Twilight's powers are dark in nature, as most of everything else she's done has been more on the "light" side. So where Celestia could be seen as the embodiment of "light" magic, and Luna "dark", Twilight's talent is magic, so maybe that just means all magic? So she occupies that space between Celestia and Luna, as the embodiment of both dark and light, which is kinda fitting I think.

I uh .. donno if that makes any sense, but I tried :dunno:.

I saw lots of things. All of which I liked. The vines, clouds, maid discord, potions, twilight eyes, fighting, rarity, sweetie belle's adorable squeal. It was all pretty awesome.

I just got done watching the new episodes. I actually really like them. For some reason they didn't feel as rushed as all the other two parters, we had some interesting character moments, and it was nice to see a bit of Equestria's past thrown in. This two parter is also the first two part episode without a villain, nd honestly, I think this worked in the episode's favor, because if it did introduce a new bad guy he'd probably be another Sombra-esque character but without the really intelligent aspects that Sombra had {Mainly all the stuff he had prepared at the Crystal tower}.

My only complaint is that the episode could have handled the whole "Twilight get's sent away by her friends" thing a little bit better, but it wasn't terribly handled and it certainly didn't hurt this two-parter in any way. I also liked how it showed that she isn't overpowered like so many people claim: I mean after all, she did get knocked out by vicious plants and almost eaten by a rock crocodile. Also, Discord was hilarious as usual too.

Yea the bit with the Alicorn magic/dark magic was kinda weird. I guess how I'm gonna explain it to myself is that under normal circumstances only Alicorns can use such magic, but Twi was able to use it in S3 because of how advanced she is compared to other normal unicorns (and perhaps foreshadowing of her upcoming transformation). Notice how she struggled to replicate the dark magic in the S3 pilot. So it kinda makes sense. http://youtu.be/HoG5deDiqug?t=26m45s

Also one thing to note, that her eyes didn't glow like it did in S3 while using, so perhaps dark magic is something different, but might just look similar to Alicorn magic (or animators forgot/were lazy). Or they're the same and Sombra can just utilize it somehow. Dunno. Hopefully we'll see her use it more often in future episodes and we'll understand it better.

Overall I really enjoyed the premier and the continuity and flashbacks are definitely refreshing to see!

    Two more things...

    1. Did anyone else think of this when Spike made the comment about taking the train?

Oh man, I'm gonna think of that every time I watch it now. Incidentally, I saw Bob Newheart live a few years ago and he signed my Rescuers dvd after the show . Nice guy.

It was strange seeing Twilight affected by dark magic. I don't think she was using it intentionally, so maybe she still has some side effects from Sombra? I don't remember the season 3 premiere much, so I may be wrong.

The episode was awesome, especially when Twilight took the drug trips and Discord showed up. I was kind of hoping there would be a new villain, but I changed my mind when it was shown to be Discord. That was a neat reveal. :p

So much better than I semi-expected!
Man, the animation really Has improved, and the first episode was written... Almost perfectly! It's DEFINITELY in my top ten favourites. The second one's brought down Only because a particular part of it was... really rushed. I know many are of the same opinion, so I'm pretty sure I don't need to say which part.

I'm gonna say which part. When twilight gets caught. It's resolved too quickly. Pretty badly done, though what with time constraints, I guess it's understandable.
Anyways, it's really helped explain some of the backstory of Equestria, and I like that. Really looking forward to seeing the later episodes, Especially that Scoots one, from what I know about it.

It was kind of pointless to have Twilight go all the way back just to change her mind right after. Those could've been 2-3 minutes well-spent elsewhere in the episode.

And i can not believe the words are coming out of me mouth, but i liked the new episodes. Well... actually i didn't like them.

Don't really have much to say about it other than...I loved it! It addressed pretty much everything that I wanted to be addressed; gave us a cool look at Celestia and Luna's past (even if it didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, it was still awesome to see); had all the character moments that made me adore the show in the first place; and left off with that 'box of harmony' thingy, which signifies to me that there's going to be an ongoing story arc about it, which I'd see as an improvement over the past seasons which were mostly full of one-shot episodes that were only loosely tied together.

All in all, I'm pretty...what's the word...

Weeeeeell, technically the movie doesn't count, but there's nothing to contradict it yet, so you can count it if you want even if the writers don't. I do.

    This should totally be canon^

    Spoiler Alert

So the writer packed more into two episodes than in the last three seasons combined. More action, more plot progression, more awesome!! I didn't think it were possible but here I am, loving the show even more. The new style of animation is simply an upgrade of its predecessor. It looks more clean and is definitely an improvement. I love Hasbro for giving us the two part premiere because people would have died if they left us with that cliffhanger (just joking, hopefully).

Okay so thoughts on the two-part episode ... they're not going to be in chronological order.

    1. I was giving discord the benefit of the doubt the entire time. Then again I suppose it was something he did all that time ago. We can see that he is reformed at the end of Princess Twilight Sparkle: Part 2. With the elements returned to the tree he could have did his whole chaos thing again. I guess it's a good thing Fluttershy has 'The Stare'.

    2. It definitely didn't feel rushed (like Equestria Girls and MMC). The writers had a decent amount of time to fit in everything that needed to be. They even gave us details that touched on matters from the previous seasons. What really happened between Celestia and Luna. What really happened with Discord. Where the elements really came from. This was just such an amazing premiere. It left no holes to be filled ... except for the box.

    3. The box. The thing that is, I'm sure, keeping most of us guessing. What's in the box? What does it mean? Where are the keys? Basically we're looking at the plot for season 4. While continuing with the regular character episodes, these key episodes (see what I did there) are going to be scattered about the season. It might even carry over into the next ... though with 26 24 episodes to get them in I doubt it'll be a two season plot device. I can only imagine that each character is going to have their own key (as there are six keys). I'll definitely be following this season and looking forward to seeing what's in this magical mystery box (I did it again).

    4. No songs. Wait ... no songs? How could there ... why? Well they weren't really needed. It was more intense and action packed than the prior seasons. They didn't have time to fit in a song, even though discord really wanted to hear one. Now a lot of you out there might be thinking that it isn't FiM without a song in the premiere ... well you're wrong. There's so much going on in this two part episode I almost didn't catch that there wasn't a song. Don't worry though, we'll be hearing/seeing "Apple's To The Core" later on in the season, so just hold your hors- *ehem* ponies ...

    5. For those avid viewers, that means you bronies, you'll notice a slight change in animation. It's not a big enough change to incite panic and chaos, discord wasn't behind this one, but it is distinctly noticeable to just about any brony. My thoughts on the change? I like it. The animation looks better, the movement more fluid, the shading more precise. It definitely improves on it's predecessor by far. I look forward to seeing the new style of animation throughout the season.

    6. Meghan wrote the two part premiere. Wait, Meghan as in Meghan McCarthy? Eeeyup. Meghan McCarthy is the brilliance behind season 4's premiere. If you ask me, she should write more of the episodes. She has already been noted for writing season 2's finale along with the premiere of season 3, which were both fantastic. Well, hopefully the other writers can keep up with her pace. Could you imagine a whole season written by Meghan? That'd be totally awesome!

    7. Princess Twilight. This is canon now and it will not be going away anytime soon. So for those of you out there who thought this was a terrible mistake of the writers, well get used to it. It's here, it's awesome, it's an alicorn Twilight. I myself called Twilight's transformation into an alicorn about midway through MMC. I called it and I'm fine with it. The only thing that's going to change is we're more than likely going to see a few more Canterlot episodes, "Whip-dee-do, Basil." For all the things I've seen on this issue it left me thinking ... wow, really? Bronies are open and accepting to everything but change? lol

So, my lovely and chaotic review of the Season 4 premiere. Like it, hate it, read it and weep. Hope everypony enjoyed the premiere as much as, or even more than I did.
