As the title says, I wanna talk about the holidays and why we celebrate some earlier and ignore others. This is partly why I applied the video from the Nostalgic Critic. He brings up points that maybe more true than we may realize. But why do we do what we do? There are holidays like Christmas which are becoming earlier celebrated and holidays like Halloween or Thanksgiving that either are lightly celebrated or totally ignored. A lot would blame Corporate America and you'd not be wrong to assume that. They do have some weight in why, but they are not exactly to blame entirely. They merely just market what we are most attached too. Christmas just happening to be one of the most marketable holidays. Now I know we all have memories of our childhoods, remembering what is so great, but some have taken it to heart that you have to wait. You don't necessarily have to, especially with dressing up. With society with expressing their likes more, we can show who were truly are without much ridicule. That unless you do something that breaks the law. In anycase, what is brought up in the video shows that were can be expressive year round and should celebrate that more often. If you like a certain Christmas because it cheers you up, play it. But also remember that it's what is expressed more than what's created. Though to segway of on a tangent a bit. Halloween is on the biggest culperate of half celebrations in this day and age. I'm sure that you have seen Foamy the Squirrel's two part rant videos on Halloween and what is wrong with it now a days. But what is interesting is that adults have begun celebrating it more too. There is still some good in all the bad. Though adult Halloween parties do lead to the typical St. Pat's fair of drunk a-holes. Either way, it's a holiday that maybe needs to be fix, but what is left is pretty fun. Spoiler: Foamy's Two Part Halloween Rant ^ Here is Foamy's rant on Halloween for anyone interested. Thanksgiving, the holiday that everyone seems to of forgot. Why do we ignore this holiday? Maybe it's because of all the shopping and the open stores during the month it is celebrated. There is not enough time for family and togetherness. Those who still follow the day still or at least it's traditions do try to be together and give thanks. This is starting to become few and far between. It's rather sad to see it die out, or maybe it'll revive in the near future. Who knows. Christmas is one of the biggest holidays that we can celebrate and corporate loves pushing it back earlier and earlier on us, but why? I maybe because of money, it maybe because of how lucrative it is, or it maybe merely because it's something the people obsess over. Both good and bad, Christmas does have it's following. Christians revere it the most as the day 'Jesus was Born'. I know not all Christians would believe that, but enough do. Point being, there is a lot what Christmas should be, and not enough on what it can be. Especially in what it's suppose to represent. A lot of what we see and perceive is opinion. That is why I wanna see what you guys say about this.
I was going to make a topic similar to this complaining about Radio stations playing Christmas Music already. It's more than a month before the holiday and they're shoving it down our throats. It takes away the meaning of the music to me.
Well, think. What do people like best? Getting things for free. What happens during Christmas? Yeah. So what holiday will people like most? Christmas. So what holiday will be pumped up most by marketing campaigns? Yup. Sure you get free candy on Easter, Halloween and sometimes Valentine's Day, but that's piddly diddly compared to what most people get for Christmas. Also, birthdays are probably second highest on the 'most liked' of days, but that's harder to market since everyone's birthday is different. Otherwise, I'm sure "Birth Day" would be just a big a marketing explosion as Christmas is. Yeah, personally I believe it should just be a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus. I don't think it was actually the day he was born, but who knows, maybe it was.
This is true. But it's something that businesses cater to more because they are making money off the people's obsession with it. So it's basically a endless cycle. Then again, that is the basis of Supply and Demand. A lot admit that it really wasn't his birthday and it's actually proven that it isn't. Though the story of his birth could be a Christmas Story in itself, despite that it was a kinda dark story too. Which is why no one would really question it as being a 'Christmas miracle' story featured at Christmas. So in some way, I do agree. It would be nice to be the day of his birth even if it isn't legit.
Right after Halloween ended, people started to advertise Christmas stuff already and whatnot. I haven't really seen or heard much about Thanksgiving coming soon. What I find annoying is that nowadays people are celebrating the holidays too early. I think it's because Christmas its more of a popular holiday and it's liked the most out of all of them. Most people think it's about getting presents and such. But, really it isn't, there's a bit more too it than that.
To be honest, anything that isn't Christmas just doesn't do it for me anymore. I celebrate New Years, listing off resolutions that I'll never actually accomplish. I like the fourth of July because I can legally blow things up. I like Halloween because you can dress up and for once it's not called cosplay. Thanksgiving is pretty fulfilling or at least it fills my stomach. When I was a child, every holiday was interesting. I'd go hog wild and celebrate to the max. As I grew older, I grew out of it. I'm only left with Christmas to get me in the holiday spirit. It's not that I enjoy the free stuff I get. The last few years I've asked for clothes or received cash to get some new outfits. As a kid I hated getting clothes as a gift. Now that I'm older, I'd rather clothes than anything else. I do enjoy the new clothes but that's not why I like Christmas. Christmas is the spirit of giving. It's the one time of year where everyone should share with their fellow man. I've been told I'm too kind for my own good as I'll help anyone out any time of year for no more reason than I have the ability to do so. Christmas brings out a part of humanity that I love. Kindness. I know that some might say not everyone shows that kindness just because it's Christmas. That's fine. As long as just one person gets that spirit of kindness, it was worth it. I also enjoy the music much to the dismay of everyone else. It goes along with the spirit of the holiday so I can't help but sing along. Now that I'm over my personal rant about the holidays, here's why I believe a lot of others get overshadowed. Big time corporations look for the best times to turn a profit. Over the years, Christmas has been one of the most successful times of profit for a lot of companies. Through media and advertisement/propaganda, Christmas has become the one holiday you simply "can't" miss. You have to go out and buy the biggest and best for your children, family, and friends. If you don't you become a "scrooge" and everyone hates you. Of course that's false. Your kids will be fine with whatever they get. If not then they'll get over it. Thanksgiving is really overshadowed due to Black Friday shopping. Instead of being home with your family, you just have to go out and get the best deals for Christmas. Not only are you saving money but you're getting your shopping done early. Sure some things will shave a few dollars off but really there's no point. You could just find a deal online and order from home anytime you like. Another instance of corporate propaganda. As for the other holidays, they're being overshadowed due to planning for Christmas. By the time New Years hits, you're already thinking about what you're going to get for Christmas next year. It's sad that this is the case but, in today's society, that's just the way it is. I still celebrate holidays though it might not be anything grand. I still recognize them. Christmas just happens to be my favorite. If anyone wants to celebrate a holiday, there's no reason you shouldn't. There will always be another Christmas. Don't spend it running around for deals and gifts. Spend it with your family and friends. The same goes for any holiday. Holidays are meant to be spent together. Otherwise, what's the point in getting the day off? Some people don't even get holidays off. TL;DR - I like Christmas but not because of the gifts. Corporations are the reason why Christmas is monopolizing the holidays. Spend time with your family and friends on holidays. -Nights
Yes. It's not even Thanksgiving and I'm being bombarded with crappy pop versions of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" when I'm trying to shop. It's irritating.
I don't usually celebrate anything. Like, ever. I mean, I did as a kid but it was never that big of a deal in my family so, as I got older, I guess I simply grew out of it. That said, even though I'm not actively participating, I kinda like the Christmas decorations and the music, at least as long as it's not too early in the year, and if I have the chance, I may watch the New Year's fireworks. And that's pretty much it.
