So did I totally miss something? What was the charity mentioned in this episode for? They say the concert was for charity, but do they ever mention what the charity is going to?

Also, I find it kind of hilarious how this contest for the schoolfoals (from which is determined the one foal who will sing onstage with Rara) was said to be the most important part of the whole gig to her. Canceling the contest was something she'd never do. And yet, in the end, she bypasses the whole thing just to say "My friend helped me out so in return her sister can sing with me onstage!"

And if Rara is supposed to be this simple, kindhearted girl deep down who is only being exploited by her evil manager, then what was with all the fancy demands before she'd even perform for the charity? Those weren't for Svengallop, because he made his own demands later on. Why did Rara herself need a wagon full of the most decadent stuff?

It isn't important to the plot, so they didn't mention it, no.

Did she bypass it? I don't remember that happening. And I don't recall any rules set for how the winner would be determined, either...so for all intents and purposes, the CMC won the contest.

Actually, that was Svengallop. It wasn't FOR him, but it was him. He specifically says that HE ordered stuff when he's questioning Pinkie about everything in the wagon.

"Do you have the water imported from Rainbow Falls that I requested for Countess Coloratura?"

And when he says things like "The items Countess Coloratura requested", he means he requested them on her behalf. It's obvious throughout the show that he is in complete control of her life. And in reality, that is what would happen as well. The manager might take some suggestions from the star, but she wouldn't have time with all the media, interviews, rehearsals, etc to actually have much real input.

The fact that it's a contest tells us that you shouldn't win by nepotism.

Yeah, so why? It still doesn't make any sense.

The fact that it's a contest also tells us that there should be some terms for victory given. Oh, wait...we don't know what they were. So you don't know that they didn't win, therefore calling it 'nepotism' is an assumption on your part, not a fact.

It's pretty obvious, especially since I just explained it. He's her manager. He does the organizing for her. Therefore, he ordered the goods. And on top of that, he also probably gets to eat the stuff. Think about it. :p

Honestly man, you seem really nit-picky about very unimportant or obvious details. I would understand if it was something big and unexplainable, but none of these things are either of those. Don't you ever just, you know, sit back and watch a show and not pick apart every little potential plot hole until you can no longer enjoy it?

"But then an old friend reminded me what real friendship is about, and she told me that if I was true to myself, I couldn't go wrong! So I have a very special surprise for her. Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, come on up!"
If you want to keep going and pretend that isn't proof, that's on you I guess.

That's an assumption on your part, not a fact. Think about it, if the stuff was actually for him, why would he keep his own demands separate from Rara? I think you could definitely stand to watch the episode again since you liked it so much :)

"When I arrived at the Helping Hooves music festival, I had forgotten who I really was! But then an old friend reminded me what real friendship is about, and she told me that if I was true to myself, I couldn't go wrong! So I have a very special surprise for her. Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, come on up!"

I'm still not seeing where it says she abandoned any contest anywhere. Like...nowhere. Zero places. Please show me where she says she ditched the contest? I don't see it.

I actually went back and watched this part again specifically, before I made any argument. He says specifically that he ordered the water from Pinkie, and then he goes on to say that Rara 'requested' certain things, which don't seem to match up with any other description of her in the episode. You could assume it's bad writing, or that Rara is 'secretly evil all along!', or you could actually make an assumption that makes sense here. I don't know why you prefer to demonize the show and its creators, rather than giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Also, I never said the stuff was for him. In fact, I said the exact opposite.

However, that doesn't mean he doesn't get to share in it.

So we're basically in a "Nuh uh" "Ya huh!" argument at this point, so I'll just let anyone reading this judge the points made as they stand.

But since you seem so concerned, let me ease your worry and assure you that I could point out major flaws in A Canterlot Wedding for hours and it wouldn't make me love the episode any less. You don't have to imagine that everything I say about an episode is preceded by "This episode sucks because". If I don't like an episode, it's because it fails to entertain. Storytelling flaws can be a part of that, but more often than not they're just afterthoughts. Thank you.

Oh, I totally forgot to mention something arguably positive I have to say about the episode.
Does anyone else think this would have made a considerably better key episode for AJ than Leap of Faith?

I really don't since Rara really was doing the concert for the right reasons. I also think Svengallop "seeing the light" would have kinda ruined this episode for me. Just my 2 bits though.

I just think teaching a childhood friend to be herself in the face of fame and glamor would be a better representation of the element of honesty than teaching a con-artist to not be a con-artist.

Svengallop being reformed wouldn't make any sense, as his name is a play on the word "Svengali."

    svengali -
    - One who manipulates or controls another as by some mesmeric or sinister influence; especially a coach, mentor or industry mogul.

I liked all the references found in this episode. As Ridley pointed out, Svengallop is a reference to the character of Svengali. Also, the items Svengallop requested for RaRa are all representations of episodes that Amy Keating Rogers wrote. The outfit Countess Coloratura wears is actually based on a red carpet design that Lena Hall wore. Lastly, Coloratura is a soprano range in opera, and Lena Hall is known for her Broadway performances.

I found the episode enjoyable to watch. The character of RaRa had such a beautiful design. I really enjoyed all the songs, and I'm Just A Pony is definitely my new favorite show song. Daniel Ingram even entered it into the Daytime Emmy's. I think the lesson is important, because there are definitely some people who seem to lose themselves when met with stardom, or who have managers that take advantage of their stardom.

    Really?
You think the people watching this show will find that a valuable lesson?

If this lesson isn't valuable to fanfic writers with aspirations to become published authors, brony musicians who hope to get signed to a record label and become successful, voice actors who hope to break into the business, etc., then clearly business practices have experienced a sudden and dramatic shift in how they work. It might not be a lesson immediately applicable to those watching the show, but it provides everyone watching who has an interest in the aforementioned areas something to mull over. Don't let yourself get deceived by a Svengali.

So, after watching this week's AHS episode, something clicked...
    Countess Coloratura
    1. Based on Lady Gaga
    2. Favorite thing is meeting with the children (school ponies)
    3. Known as The Countess

    American Horror Story - Hotel
    Elizabeth Johnson / The Countess
    1. Played by Lady Gaga
    2. Collects children (Her favorite things?)
    3. Known as The Countess

So, Rara isn't just Lady Gaga, she's Lady Gaga from American Horror Story!
Coloratura is a vampire with an army of vampire children that lives with the ghosts of serial killers. Fact.

Not my favorite episode. I think it comes down entirely to the music, which was supposed to be impactful and me feel for the episode. It didn't do that for me, at all. Rara's 'true to herself' song was merely a different type of generic overdone pop than the first Lady Gaga-style pop song, thus... only made me agitated with the episode.

It would have been one of the better episodes of the season, if only.

This takes second place for my favorite episodes of season five. First goes to 'Crusaders of the Lost Mark' because CMC plus cutie marks equals awesome. This episode is so highly rated because it was just all around pleasing to watch. 10/10 would watch again. To be honest, "The Magic Inside", the final song that Rara performs was the first song I've actually enjoyed straight from the show in a long time. Rara easily became one of my favorite characters from the show. Her character is just so appealing, personality wise. She has a kind heart, even though things looked iffy there in the beginning but that wasn't her fault. She stays true to herself, at least when she has a friend to help her see the way. She does what she does for everyone else, not herself. She's just a well designed character. Also her VA gets a 10/10.
