Again I am only talking from experience, of having the unfortunate time of meeting people online who said they were 'bisexual' or lesbian, getting into a relationship with them, meeting up and them admitting to actually being straight. People on forums who want to get into dumb forum relationships often do it with each other, or will pretend to be bisexual etc on the surface. Also actually there is zero reprocussions for doing it due to them being mostly anonymous. I don't throw things out of my ass without experiencing / seeing them for myself people.
I never said you did; I merely meant to imply that your experiences, while uniquely interesting as anecdotes, might not be the best representation of the community or internet at large. Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I think you're dumb or whatever; there's no need to be so defensive.
Point being- While there are legitimate cases of people reaching out for help in these situations, they are often covered up by people who either don't truly understand the gravity of the mask they wear for attention, or even worse, by people who blatantly lie for that attention.
Covered up in the sense that the fakes are more vocal, probably. But it would be hard to draw any solid conclusions about what the actual numbers of fakes and real cases are anyway, so I don't shed too many tears over it.
I'm Autistic and Gay so let me say something..........It's hard......See when people think of Autism, they think of the Stereotypical fat kid who can't speak and rages every five minutes because he doesn't have his Crayons or something. And while some kids are like this, Autism goes on a spectrum and every kid is different. Introducing me! Problem is.....I do received messages from People on Twitter saying "You're not Autistic, Because then why are you on the internet" or something like that. And this is because of people who fake mental conditions for attention on the internet. People don't always trust me when I say I have Autism due to the stereotype around it and these people who fake Mental Conditions. And it's the same if I mention I'm gay, This is not fair on me, the person who actually has the Condition. And has to deal with the backlash due to these Attention whoring people.
I don't even bother to tell people that I have Aspergers, because most folks don't know what it is, and when I explain that it's a high-functioning form of autism, a lot of them start treating me like I'm Rainman or something. It's *squee!*ing ANNOYING.
The reason the concept of Autism is seen so negatively on the internet is because of trolls who make fun of works of art saying that it was made by an autistic person as a insult. Any other general stereotypes that maybe said are typically made up by people who do not understand the mental condition and choose to make fun of it to make themselves feel better. I have Autism and Aspergers, or so I have been told that I was in general spectrum. I know what it feels like to have those conditions, but it doesn't make us any different for having it. I have worse than that. I have a pretty major Learning Disability, hindering certain kinds of information from properly taking to memory, slowing my ability to learn. I'm still trying to live my life, I learn the best I can. If I make a mistake, I fix it. No one that has these conditions is alone. I share the pain of having to deal with and see people make fun of the conditions we many have.
THIS. However, I would also like to point the finger at one Christian Weston Chandler for ruining the reputation of those of us who are on the spectrum. If you don't know who he is, consider yourself lucky to live under such a rock. If you're curious, however, this will tell you everything you need to know, along with plenty of things you didn't need to know. For those who don't want to know? Well, all of the stereotypes associated with the spectrum essentially come from this guy. Many amazing people have made contributions to society and just so happen to be autistic (Dan Aykroyd, best known for Ghostbusters, and Satoshi Tajiri, the man who gave us Pokémon, are just two examples off the top of my head), and they (and by extension, we) do not deserve to be tarred with the same brush as this guy. Speaking as someone diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, I have made plenty of mistakes in my life. We all do, it's part of being human. But I don't blame my shortcomings on the fact that I'm autistic. In fact, I am doing my best to make myself a productive member of society. I'm navigating the ocean of life to the best of my ability. And while I may work a little differently under the hood than most people, I'm still a human being.
I know who this guy is. I just never knew he was the originator of the Autism Stereotype BS. And I thought I hated this jackass before. This 'person' has now officially hit the top of my To Kill list, otherwise known as my *squee!* list. I don't think one person, besides my step-mother, has hit a nerve as hard as this *squee!* officially has. Do I sound pissed? Because I really am. Do you wanna know how pissed I am? I wanna burn him at the stake, among other things that one would do at the Salem Witch Trials. Not that I support that indecent that happened long ago, but that's how pissed I am.
Don't forget about "Autism Speaks" which like most Charities barely gives to the actual cause and spends most of it on making a way of detecting Autism before birth, which is pointless because all it does is make (Bad? IDK?) parents think "I don't want the struggle of an Autistic child.......Abort it!" Other than that they only seem to promote the most extreme Autism and made this ad only like 1 - 3 years ago. This is an absolutely bad ad. Because it misinforms people what Autism is. It has a nice ending.......But the beginning still misinforms people which annoys me!
Autism Speaks is the group that's really pushing the "vaccines cause autism" angle, which has been proven many times over to be complete BS. It's also the favorite platform of Jenny McCarthy, who claims to have "cured" her son's autism with a diet change. The fact that he wasn't autistic, and merely had a food allergy, doesn't seem to matter to her. Also, don't get me started on Chris-Chan. That... thing... is on my "Harm on General Principle" list.
I forgot about CWC until you mentioned his name. That lunatic is literally incapable of learning from his actions, and he will always find ways to draw negative attention to himself as the years progress (this stuff has been going on for nearly a decade with him). He is essentially the other side of the internet "coin" (the other being the "self-diagnosed" attention *squee!*s) perpetuating all sorts of asinine stereotypes. The broad nature of the spectrum in itself probably contributes to the various misunderstandings (as stated above, a good deal of people think of the screaming kid incapable of speaking when they hear or see the word "autism"). Another problematic issue with the spectrum classification is that people on the "higher" end of it seem to be dealing with more of a difference than some kind of debilitating mental disorder. Indeed. Quite frankly, people who refuse to vaccinate their children (unless they have legitimate allergic reactions and such to vaccines) should be charged with felony child abuse and/or child endangerment. Andrew Wakefield should also be held criminally liable for any outbreaks, illnesses, etc. that have resulted in children not being vaccinated when they should have been vaccinated in the first place. The relatively recent "outbreak" in autism diagnoses is a result of the diagnostic criteria changing over the years, not because of vaccinations.
'Using autism as an insult is really not very different from using "retarded" as an insult. Both words describe legitimate mental conditions, but get used as an insult to essentially say "you are mentally substandard." Usually when people throw around the word "retard", it also isn't being applied to someone exhibiting the actual characteristics of mental retardation. Certainly, part of it seems to come from Asperger's being pulled into the autism spectrum. Asperger's has been used for much longer as a way to offhandedly characterize the stereotypical neckbeard, and autistic seems to have been a natural escalation. Often, when a term becomes overly common and loses its teeth, people will escalate to a similar term that is perceived to mean the same thing, but even more so (that's also one of the reasons that people add "literally" to everything -- it's perceived as increasing the extremity of what you're saying).'
Agreed. Autism is starting to run stale on the insult spectrum and will slowly die out as more and more creators are Autistic we already have loads. The Problem with Asperger's is that it is new to the Autistic Spectrum and people who are uninformed are now targeting that instead. Which is great for me being Autistic.......But for People with Asperger's it kinda sucks........
I have depression, anxiety, Asperger and Gender Dysphoric, I know this for sure because I have actually been clinically diagnosed with those. I say I possibly have at least bi polar, as there are times I can be happy one minute and then the next, the smallest thing will make me snap and be the complete opposite. But I get where you're coming from, as it is the same with me and people claiming to be Gender Fluid or Transgender just to get more attention. I have known up to at least five people who have done that on RLPV alone, it sickens me. How do I know that they're faking it? Simple, I've known them for at least a year beforehand, and they showed no signs what so ever of being gender dysphoric, and they only 'came out' as it after knowing me.. [quote\ Using autism as an insult [/quote] This, this really pisses me off, I hate the whole "Every brony has autism" it's as if people are saying that autism is a bad thing, i mean, in a way it is, but it is something that people cannot help having, it is a genetic mental/intellectual disease, passed through generations by DNA. This also debunks the whole "immunizations give autism" bull as well
Since we're going on the sub-topic of Autism: Many people have autism. Some autistic people are 'good'. Some autistic people are 'bad'. Some of them struggle with 'raging at materialistic items every 5 minutes' (as the less-intellectual-pretending-to-be-smart people call it) Some of them struggle with 'they are so annoying and never focus' (as the less-intellectual-pretending-to-be-smart-people call it) Some of them have a lesser IQ, some of them have a higher IQ. --- Bottom line is: they're people like each and every one of us (unless you're a bot). We have our good's and bad's, but it doesn't mean that-let me rephrase this: just because one human being doesn't benefit society, doesn't mean that all of us don't benefit society. Just cause there might be some autistic people that do follow stereotypes, doesn't mean that all of them are stereotypical. Just because some of them act differently from other members of society, doesn't mean that they're 'wrong', or 'bad'. It doesn't mean that they can be made fun of. --- Just because one human is 'bad', doesn't mean that the aliens have a right to mock us all. In this metaphor, the 'humans' are the autistic spectrum of our society; and the aliens are the online personas of other, non-autistic humans. They have to right to mock them-much less the right to pretend to be autistic for 'brownie points. People need to understand that-just because you have the power of the Internet in your hands, doesn't mean that you have to use it in every way (good and bad) possible. It doesn't mean that you have to take advantage of people. It doesn't give you any more right to mock another than to mock someone in real life. --- As someone once told me: "Sometimes, having a licence to kill means not knowing when to pull the trigger,"
Lots of people who constantly make posts about depression are usually have depression or anxiety. They are just looking for someone to help them. Honestly i was this kind of person i would constantly make posts about how much life sucks and etc. I did it for attention i wanted people to feel bad for me and etc, I see now that this is wrong and I should have never dealt with my problems like that. That's honestly what those people don't understand . It is wrong and instead of going to the internet they should go get professional help. Now when it comes to Bipolar, etc. I have a strong belief most people fake this and I don't understand why people do this, but as someone who was involved in the "creepypasta " fandom and met alot of people who did this. I think it was to make them look "cool". In that fandom is are bipolar you are seen as cool and if you think about it most of those people are children . So maybe it's because they are children and don't see it's wrong and when people give them praise and fame because of what they are doing they think they continue to do it and never realize that it is wrong.
