Liar liar, pants on... oh wait, ponies don't wear pants. ^///^

So yeah, we get a little back story on how AJ learned the value of her most prominent trait! And who knew Mac was such a motormouth in his youth!? Anygoo, tidbits... Anyone catch the reference to The Shining?

    Overall: 6/10

So yeah, it's confirmed now that the characters do have last names, since Spoiled Rich was Spoiled Milk before she married Filthy Rich.

It was good. Before anyone calls it "Sweet and Elite 2.0", please remember that if this episode ripped off Sweet and Elite, then Sweet and Elite ripped off something before it that did the "web of lies" plot that's been seen many times.

I also want to see an 'origins story' episode showing that Fluttershy used to be a bully now.

This episode was alright. It felt like the episode was dragging on and on forever..... Big Mac being a chatterbox wax pretty silly. It explains so much. Felt bad for Derpy, though. And yeah, I did catch The Shining reference. Spoiled Milk? That's a weird name for a pony! Nothing much to say about this one. Overall, I give it a 5/10.

Thoughts below, in spoilers, as normal.

Backstory episodes are always interesting and intriguing because it reveals more about certain characters. This one was no different.

Wow, Big Mac was quite the chatterbox in the past!! To be completely honest, I'm glad he doesn't talk like that now, it'd actually be kind of annoying and too much talking.

It wasn't that surprising when Applejack's lies started making this worse and worse and it just got compounded when she made more and more lies. This is actually a good moral because constantly lying will only make your problems worse and not better.

It's good to know that Filthy Rich's wife was just as much of a jerkass in the past that she is now. At least she's consistent? :dunno:

I actually just really liked this episode in general because it gave us more backstory on Applejack, as well as Big Mac, and how she developed her honesty streak.

I tend to like backstory episodes because we get a better 'feel' for characters and how they developed who they are.

The episode itself, once again, may not have been 'outstanding' or 'amazing' but I still liked it due to the fact that it was a backstory episode.

    :smile2:

    Dear Princess Celestia,
Today I learned that Applejack has always been a horrible pony, but at least these days she's honest about it. Please keep her in the background where she belongs. Thanks!

I thought it was pretty great. I do love a good backstory, and at some point I was sure that Filthy Rich was playing along. Haha.
All the little hints to characters backstories was cool too. I didn't catch the shining reference however.

Seriously, though, despite the inconsistencies (parents seemingly already dead, but no Applebloom), it was an enjoyable episode. It was neat to see AJ and Big Mac acting so differently than they do now, and I loved how Filthy Rich seemed terrified of the true don of the Apple family.

I think this episode was the first true disappointment to me this season. Which is good, because it was 23 episodes in, but it still wasn't a great episode in my mind. The plot was a retread of a common trope - the web of lies that spirals outrageously out of control - but that was only part of the problem. First, I actually found Big Macintosh's part in the story more interesting than the main story, but it fell flat, especially when they only teased us with the end of the tale of hoe he got his cutie mark. I get the feeling that would have made a better episode, honestly! Then there was the glaring continuity error which had everyone scratching their heads as to the exact relative ages of Applejack and Applebloom, and the timing of their parents' deaths, relative to an apparently not-yet-born Diamond Tiara. The fact that this story was co-written by Meghan McCarthy, who should know this stuff inside out and backwards as the chief story editor, made that even more disappointing.

So, yeah, far from the show's best moments. Applejack as a teenager was cute, and the little background details like Cheerilee's 80's look, Ditzy Doo's eye surgery and the twins from The Shining in pony form were fun to watch for, but couldn't much save the episode from mediocrity.
