He looked genuinely upset. "I don't want you to kill yourself. I don't want you to die just for me. Goodness knows I wouldn't have liked to die as young as I was and I was older than you."
"Not by much," she insisted. "And besides... I mean... God, Warner. You've seen my life. What do I have to live for?"
She scoffed slightly, but he would see tears in her eyes. "Right, my family. Are you referring to my alcoholic dad or my deadbeat mother?"
"Well, then I'll see her through college. She's in her last year of middle school now, that's only five more years," she said almost desperately.
Tears had managed to spill over her eyelashes and she wiped them away angrily, pulling away from him. "I'm not going to forget you, Warner," she said quietly, sitting up and turning away from him. "I'm not going to have you waiting around."
There was a small pause before she turned to look at him and her expression was one of such profound, startling hurt, her brows furrowed. “I think I get it,” she said after a minute, her voice low.
Tears were now falling down her face and she stood up suddenly. “I get that... you didn’t expect me to be around for very long, and so saying *squee!* like ‘I love you’ would seem like not a big lie to tell because my position here is so temporary, but *squee!*. That *squee!*ing sucks. That’s really, really terrible.”
He seemed incredibly upset at this, standing as well. "You can't be serious, Addie. You really think me telling you not to kill yourself is me seeing you as temporary? You've best be joking. I don't even want to think of the time we'd have to spend apart, but I also cannot believe you would throw something so precious away for someone like me. I don't like that you think I'm like that. I did nothing to deserve it."
“Well, you don’t have to worry,” she shot back fiercely. She headed towards the door. “I won’t bother you with this commitment. Okay? You’re off the hook. Don’t bother.”
