I think that the unicorns had to collectively do this task as it would take up alot of magic. The two princesses however could do this with ease as they are more powerful. It also leaves the unicorns to do other important jobs like erm... err... making dresses and being fancy? I'm not sure but it would be easier for the two sisters to do it daily rather than a blessing of unicorns (yes, that is the correct term).
No no, that's what I mean. The princesses and Discord were perfectly capable of doing that themselves. Why did the story portray the unicorns as the ones to do that job, if their leaders can do it themselves?
I guess at that time, when Equestria was made, neither the alicorns or Discord existed so they were the only one's fit for the job. And even if Discord was capable of doing it, no-one liked him because he was just trolling everyone with his disharmony and chocolate rain. So the alicorn sisters came in and got Discord stoned. After all this the sisters were in charge as they were the most powerful. I probably haven't answered your question properly as I tend to go off the point but if your wondering why Discord or the sisters were not assigned the job, it's because they didn't exist. I'm no historian but this is what I think.
If they didn't exist, then the flag would make no sense. Oh well, there's too many holes in the story to come up with anything definitive, so hopefully it will be cleared up in a later episode.
Maybe it was some sort of crazy ass prochecy that they'd come up with that they'd come down or they could be some sort of deity. It could also represent the unity between the races because an alicorn has characteristics of all three. It also barely resembles a yin-yang symbol. The contrast between their colours could also represent something. If you are wondering why I'm going into some much useless detail, I've done a GCSE in media against my will and I had to analyse useless crap and write 500 words on it.
Good points. The princesses could have been deities that descended down to defeat Discord, then later decided to become the new leaders of Equestria, thus taking over the control of the sun and moon. Again, I hope there will be clarification in a future episode.
I hope so too. Because this show is so amazing, I sometimes forget that it was originally for little girls so some plot holes were going to be evident. To be honest though I doubt there will be an episode on Celestia and Luna as the show generally focus on the mane six, which makes sense.
Personally I think that if Faust were still the Executive Producer for the show, that episode would have been different.
Yeah she would've taken all of this into account. Although the whole episode could just be a legend that was passed down over many years and altered over time. That would explain the inaccuracies.
Faust explained she was involved in the scripts/storyboards for Season 2. Perhaps this is her episode. On a side note, Rainbow Dash says "mission at hand" rather than "hoof." I wasn't paying attention too much to continuity, but it's VERY odd that the banner for Equestria boasts Celestia and Luna's Yin & Yang banner and it's supposed to have taken place before they ruled, or before Discord. Perhaps it's intended to be like actual Christmas stories and carols told/passed down--how they come to be distorted and change over time.
Perhaps the original flag was lost or would not be recognised by modern ponies so they used their current flag.
Faust can finalize scripts but can't make big changes or create her own. Her faq on her deviant art stated that for the first half of season 2 she saw story conception and scripts. For the second half of season two she only helped with story concepts.
When i heard of this episode was a sort-a-like- Christmas Special, i was completely screaming over with excitement and i could wait to watch it. When it came, i sat down and watched it after work and have a good day at work was good after all and getting this was a Awesome Christmas bonus. This Episode Blew my Bloody mind away and the Song at the end was so heart-warming that i wanted to cry of happiness. :3 This episode made it in the top 5 listing of best episodes of season 2. I also enjoyed the Middle age theme of the story and i'm like a kid in a candy store to this stuff.
I adored this episode because the ponies put on a play, and I'm a theatre kid, so it just had everything I love. It's possible that the flag symbol has nothing to do with Luna and Celestia, and it is only a strange coincidence that the two Alicorns on the flag look alike to them. However, Spike narrates the play with the line, "A long time ago, before the rule of Celestia..." so I figure that Luna and Celestia, or some other pair of Unicorns may have been raising the moon and sun, but they weren't considered royalty at the time. Another possibility is that parts of the story are obscured or fictionalized, since it happened a long time ago. Pinkie's reference to "Singin' in the Rain" made me giggle.
