She had a scent similar to the sea, but also something else. Pineapple, perhaps. "Mean looking? That's silly."
"I'll be sure to apologize to the next salamander I meet, then."
"Yeah," he said. "Vacation home, or whatever you call it."
"Yeah," she said, kissing his temple. "You do."
"You just called me beautiful," he said. "Besides, I was referring to a salamander."
"I don't go to the lake that often," he admitted. "More the ocean."
She watched him for a moment, her fingers tapping his shoulders. "You have nice eyes."
"They're slimy," he said teasingly. "It's gross."
He followed her. "Is the lake nice in the summer?"
"Then I know you wouldn't mean it," she said. "So I would forgive you."
"Maybe," he said. "Have you ever had a salamander on your head?"
"Well," he said. "That's the best way to do things, I suppose."
"That's true," she said, "but I also know you probably wouldn't mean it."
"I appreciate it," he said, kissing her cheek.
"Would you rather me be ecstatic?"
"Don't worry," she said, patting his head. "I'll forgive you."
"Now I feel pretty," he said, grinning at her. "Thanks."
He squinted at her, crossing his arms after he found the ground. "I'm almost glad I'm leaving."
"I'll be senile," she said. "Then I won't care that you're mean."
