In all honesty, it's pretty annoying, and I think most of the guys here would agree with me. Can we bump it down to 5 at least?
I don't feel the ten character limit is that bad. The word "character" alone almost fulfills that by itself.
I honestly don't think the character limit is a problem. If you can't seem to get 10 characters into a post, you should probably add something. Heck, when my friend tried to get me to go over to MLPForums, I hated it there. Did you know they have a 100 character limit? That's just brutal!
I think it's hilarious how some forums are implementing a 100 minimum, and a ten character limit is the hot topic over here. If you can't even put in ten characters, then your post carries very little to no content. Posts containing no content should be considered spam. The more spam we have, the more likely users will grow bored of seeing the same old, "yes" and "no" posts. Forums with high amounts of spam usually attract more trolls as well. If you can't get a /10char, then you shouldn't be posting. Is it really hard to throw an extra sentence in that expands upon your opinion? I would post a link to people arguing a 100CharLimit, but it has come to my attention that people here aren't too fond of the forum that I originally hail from. ~All material below has been edited and included at a different time from the original post~ Grey is right. If you honestly can't afford the five seconds to post something that drives discussion, then what are you doing on the internet? That first sentence is ~14 characters. If you wish for your forum to prosper then creating not only a nice environment, but also an active one is essential. By the logic included in the original post, YES, I COULD have included the gist of my thoughts in one word: NO. However, elaborating on this thought opens up discussion and encourages other people to post. The more people posting, the more active the forum is. The more active a forum is, the more likely it is to survive. If you think 10 is too much, look at mlpforums.com! They have a 100 character limit. To tell the truth, that didn't recieve much positive feedback, however they're growing more than ever. Here is their thread where they discuss the matter. Take care that their statistics are THEIRS and does not represent this site. It is only a demonstration and comparing the reaction to such a measly limit compared to one with ten times ours. Most material in the original post does not pertain to this matter, however arguments presented in the following pages are relevant enough so that I feel I should present them. This post has been edited for grammatical reasons. That, and the fact that it's hard as hell to read. -12/3/13
Come on now, there's plenty of ways to turn your small posts into longer ones. "no" "I don't think so." "Uhh... how about no." "Or... not!" <- 10 Characters including punctuation and space. "yes" "That's the ticket!" "Of course." "Alright then." "Sure, sounds fine." "what?" "What do you mean?" "Why is that?" "Uhm... how so?" "So what then?" Etc... etc... ad infininum.
10 characters is a reasonable amount as it stands. If it's not broken, don't fix it. What would you post with 5 characters that you cannot post with 10?
I see no problem with it. Most of the time, if it's less than 10 characters, it's hardly worth saying. Besides you can always just add ... or /10char to reach the limit.
You only more or less see the restriction come into play if you spend a lot of time in the games section. Some responses are only one word, like "Salad".
