I notice a lot of backlash within the fandom over Starlight Glimmer. In the spirit of keeping this short and letting you talk, my question is this: Why do so many fans hate her so? If you dislike her yourself, can you explain why?
I don't really understand the hate with Starlight. Is it because she was a villain (who later got added into the main cast, making her NOT REDEEMED)? Is it because the show's focusing on her a lot? Is she just not that good of a character? A lot of reasons I hear are quite mixed, but I personally think she's a decent addition to the show.
I started watching the show because of EG. When they did a second character like Sunset, it's just annoyed me. The whole reason I can't stand Glimmer is because at the end of the episode she was redeemed the people she "enslaved" forgave her. Sunset had to work towards forgiveness. Sure the main six gave her a chance, but the rest of the school didn't forgive her till she saved them from the Sirens.
Lio has a good point about this matter, it would be more understandable if Starlight had to work harder to make up for her past ahem... booboos. Sunset had to go through much more to proof that she's changed, it was pretty clear that the mane six would forgive her. To quote Pinkie: Wow! We are a really forgiving group! I thought she's disliked because people are afraid that she might mess with original dynamic between the main characters. Some people just seems to dislike change.
I'm now meh to her. I originally didn't like her because it looked like they were going down the path of each new bad guy is super OP because reasons. She is a unicorn that couldn't get into magic school; remember she lost her friend when he was selected. She somehow goes unnoticed all this time and yet somehow has magic on at least on par with the Element of Magic Alicorn Princess Twilight Sparkle because, you know, plot device or something. And I agree with Lio, her original redemption seemed forced. Luna got sent to the moon for 1000 years for trying to take over. Starlight Glimmer tries to destroy time and space for petty revenge reasons, loses, and then just goes, "lol. my bad" and everyone is okay with it? No moon time penance? Luna is the one that should be livid. Unicorn privilege. It's real.
Said it before, say it again, EG brought me into the show, so I didn't see more then random episodes before that. Even after that I missed a bunch. Changing things up doesn't bother me cause I've never been that invested in the show. I get things need to change, but the whole quick forgiveness and then she's added to the title the very next episode... that lost me.
Admittedly, I did not. ^///^ As for me, I've never taken issue with the situation. Yes it's similar to Sunset's but I don't personally find it that farfetched that someone or a group of people can find it in their hearts to forgive someone who the rest of the world may deem as unforgiveable. Sure, it's definitely not always the case but at the same time, it's never impossible. Given the nature of the show, many of the characters are that way. Plus, from a practical standpoint, it does still have to fit within 22-44 minutes hence why the final musical number obviously covers a time lapse.
Because she is somewhat of a mary sue. The truth of the matter is that certain elements of the world had too be changed too make Starlight work. That being said she is nessicary for the writers. A lof of the main characters have already resolved their character arcs. So there isn't much left too do with them. And too clarify I personally love good ol GlimGlam.
Glim Glam is just unnecessary. She only seems to be there because the writers are running out of ideas for the Mane 6. When they resort to Glim Glam for everything she comes off as intrusive. I never liked the idea of her being redeemed anyway, she was much more fun as a villainess. As a recurring villainess she'd be awesome. But as Twilight's dog, no.

We're down to one recurring villain. The best villain, but still... They could have had more than one.
I like Starlight, she's a pretty cool pony. I'm okay with her being reformed and working with Twilight. It's nice to see a new main character in the show.
