I'm fine with it, but I was wondering: Does it show up as activity? It doesn't seem like it would or like it does, and I wish it would, kinda. Is there a way you could make the thread see the auto-merge as a new post in terms of thread activity, but not in terms of post count?? Cause that would be really nice.
Another issue we've had with it is someone wanted to post responses to their Ask thread, but had more than 10 pics for it, but couldn't double post to use all of them. :/ Mike's trying to figure out a workaround. I'll bring this up to him as well.
Oh, yeah, that would be an issue for Artists who are new to the forum and have a bunch of art to post.
The point of the auto-merge feature is to prevent unneeded double-posting. So in a sense, the forum automatically edits your post with the information you wanted to add. So in sense of activity updates, it also does the exact same thing, and people never complained about that before. If you want the activity of a thread to be updated so people can see your edit, you can copy/paste your previous post into a new one and add the information you want to add to that. Delete the first post before posting the new one. We can look into ways to make that easier, but i'm not sure it's possible. The auto-merge feature won't merge posts made after 24 hours of the other one, so you can still use a new post to bump a thread to give it a second chance of getting some attention.
Are you sure? I double posted thinking it would merge them. It had only been about 20-30 minutes. It posted it as it's own post.
So it works like - - - Double Post Auto Merge - - - It works like this? - - - Double Post Auto Merge - - - Wow, that's useful. - - - Double Post Auto Merge - - - Did you say it has a 30 min bump cooldown?
That's weird... It should be 24 hours. I'll tell Mike about it, he's the only one who can look into it.
Hi everypony! To clear some things up, the timestamp of the post does update. If you post at 2pm, and again at 5pm, the post will change it's time to 5pm. The time limit for auto merge is set for 24 hours (in accordance with our Site Rules).
I am not sure if it marks it as unread actually. I would personally prefer it didn't as that defeats the purpose of discouraging double posting. :I
Yeah, but the point of marking it unread is to notify those watching it that Hey! Something new has happened with this thread! Which the auto merge does place new information into a previous post. (Plus, I checked, it does not update the subscriptions.)
Like I said, "discourage double posting". If it's so important, copy the old post, delete it, and post a new one. Boom, done, thread is updated and you've merged the posts yourself.
Apparently. Anyway, I'm gonna rethink this feature and discuss more with staff. I'll keep you guys posted and will make a final decision come tomorrow (or later today because timezones).
