I seem to see only G4 FIM ponies. No sign of G2, G3s...maybe I missed something in the rules area? Don't get me wrong but I do like G4s but it would also be nice to see the other Gs and it's because of the G3s that I got into ponies in the first place the G4s are like a follow-up for me. I hope I don't offend anybody by posting this.

There are some G3 fans here. I myself might slowly be coming around to them.

I don't think it's against the rules. That would just be silly.

I think this place was made with bronies in mind, meaning fans of the G4 show. Feel free to post things from older generations of course, but be aware that for some reason, there seems to be something of a stigma against the older generations with several users. Don't worry about it though, My Little Pony is My Little Pony, even if the show is completely different from the earlier generations. 'Banning' the older generations from a place like this would be ridiculous.

Besides, you aren't the only fan of the older generations here.

This forum isn't all for G4 (FiM) but the majority of us came from the liking of the new generation which is Friendship is Magic.

There is bound to be some G3 or other Generation fans here.

I'm not a fan but it's allowed here.

Yeah, you're right. Its just that the style of G4 is just so different from the previous generations. Yeah, it's a girl show, but it can be appreciated by a male audience easier than the older generations can be. Thats my opinion anyway.

The recent internet popularity that sprang from the show is based pretty much solely in G4, and seeing as the majority of that group that came up because of it was male the older gens haven't really gone over very well with them. Due to that, most recent MLP sites created are based solely in G4. Now that's not to say that they ban any other generation, but most people browsing them don't have interest in the older series.

The thing is that being a brony is utterly different from being a fan of the older generations.

See, most G1 through G3½ fans are basically collectors and specialise in Hasbro's merch and collecting it. There isn't that much talk about in whatever form the ponies appeared on TV, also because the older MLP productions range from mediocre but watchable to truly abysmal, but they have in common that they're nothing outstanding.

And now the brony. First of all, G4 isn't the term bronies usually use for what they love. We rather call the show by its name: Friendship is Magic. And here comes the biggest difference: We're not fans of Hasbro's toys. Actually, we frequently and openly complain about Hasbro's decisions as far as pony toys go. Bronies are fans of the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic first and foremost. We love the stories. We love the setting. We love the characters which are far, far more fleshed out than in any previous MLP generation. We love ponies seen only in the background with neither a canonical name nor any dialogues more than what's standing on toy store shelves. Some of us do collect what you'd call G4, but others won't touch anything they haven't seen in the show. For us, the show came first, and everything has to (or at least should) be based off of these so far 29 episodes.

The difference can also be seen in custom ponies. G1 to G3½ custom ponies are customised to something that hasn't got anything to do with ponies, that's actually farther away from the franchise's origin. FiM custom ponies are customised to something from the show that Hasbro doesn't bother to make and sell to us. From show-accurate white Celestias to Lunas and Nightmare Moons to blind bag Fluttershys with correct hairstyles to fan favourite background ponies.

We only get in touch with older generations because
    a) Lauren Faust based MLP:FiM on the way she played with G1 as a kid (with far more fleshed-out characters than anything Hasbro had come up with prior to MLP:FiM) which is our connection to G1.
    b) Hasbro somehow lost the rights to all G1 characters except Applejack and Spike, so Lauren Faust had to totally and radically retool more recent ponies. For example, our Rainbow Dash isn't the fashion victim "dressing in style" old fans may be familiar with. She's got the character Lauren Faust gave Firefly when she was a kid. Our Rainbow Dash is a tomboy with a big yap, a speed junkie, quite lazy, sometimes rude, a very bad loser, but almost always loyal.
    c) Also, some background ponies were named after previous generation ponies by the fans. In Cheerilee's case, this became canon.

See, this isn't the first time that I have to explain to a fan of the older generations the difference between that and a brony.

Now I'm curious. How did you, Ponyvinyl, find out about MLP:FiM after all? The show itself (The Hub, YouTube...) or the toys (Hasbro, Toys "Я" Us, Target...)? If you came here over the toy line, I strongly recommend you to look up the show on YouTube and watch at least a few episodes to see what all the commotion has been about over the past twelve months.
