Julion sat in his command tent in the Everfree, sifting through payment reports and job offers when his second in command known as Bloody 2, came in. "Sir, we've captured a payment evader, looks to be a raider from the town." Julion sighed and levitated a cigar to his mouth and lit it, "Let's get this over with." The raider was shoved down by two mercenaries and they glared daggers at him while their levitated weapons pointed at his head. He turned to see a unicorn stallion covered from neck to hoof with camouflaged battle armor and a black beret topped his head, fear instantly pervaded his body. Everypony knew him, he was the dreaded mercenary only known as the Soldier, and his group had missed their third payment to him, and that meant death to them all. Julion calmly walked up and stared into the raider's face, sensing his fear, his face bloodied from the wounds his men gave him. Julion brought the cigar out of his mouth and exhaled the smoke right onto the raider's face, "Well well well, look who we got here." he said threateningly, "A member of the most recent group who, dispite being given two other chances, has arrogantly refused to pay me! I think you should know my strike system, but let me refresh it in your mind, strike one: we raid your stores and take what you owe, simple right? Strike two: We kill enough ponies in your group to make up the difference, as every life has a price, and then take your supplies of equal value. Strike three: Everypony dies." Julion nodded to the two mercenaries pointing their weapons at the raider's face, and they grapped the raider by the front hooves and slammed his back into against a tree. Julion bit back into his cigar and drew out a massive, evil looking knife engraved with the name: Head Taker. Julion twirled the knife with his magic as he approached the raider, "Don't worry, we'll make sure that your friends make a nice example." he said as he put the knife to the raider's throat. "Now, it's time to die." the knife cut into the raider's neck, and his head fell onto the forest floor.
"Congratulations, It's a boy. A unicorn, and no mutations that I can see. I'll have the full test results within the week. Let me know if you have any questions. ~9 years later~ "Wings?" Ecliptic asked. "Yes," the doctor pony replied, "They look functional, if underdeveloped. With time and practice you might just...well you never know. As far as mutations go, however, I'd say they're better than an extra leg or inefficient blood. Still, if you want me to remove them, you'll have to wait. I understand you're taking the C.A.T. today?" "Yeah, I better be going. Thanks." Ecliptic left the clinic. "Congratulations class," Ecliptic's teacher announced, "You all got perfect scores. Although there were no wrong answers..." The class giggled softly at the joke. Ecliptic looked down at his results. They didn't give him a definitive answer as to what he should be good at. Instead, they had scheduled him to cycle through the notoriously difficult positions. The bell rang, and with a confused sigh, he left for his room. ~One week later~ "Welcome to maintenance." A old stallion greeted Ecliptic. "I see you're young and you don't have a pipbuck. You must be that new colt the Overmare mentioned." Ecliptic opened his mouth to introduce himself when the stallion continued, "Well, enough chit-chat. There's a small crack in one of the vents and it's letting radiation in. So I want you to pop some Rad-X, grab whatever tools you need from that locker, and squeeze yourself in. I suggest bringing a light and some rope so you don't get lost. Lemme know when you've fixed it." Ecliptic closed his mouth as the old pony walked away. With a defeated look on his face, he opened the vent and got to work. ~Two months later~ "Finally!" Ecliptic shouted, "I finally got my cutie mark!" The party guests all congratulated him. "Indeed you have." A door opened and the Overmare stepped inside, a package floating beside her. "This is for you. I'm sure you already know what it is, but it's still fun to tear the paper off." The magical aura keeping the package afloat shifted from a dark pink to a bright blue as he took hold of the package and pulled off the paper. Inside was a recently polished pipbuck. Ecliptic extended his front leg and the Overmare attached it to his foreleg, just above his hoof. "Thank you, ma'am." he said as the magic dissipated. She smiled at him and walked off. "Took you long enough." A rough voice sounded to Ecliptic's left. "Ha! Great job kid. I knew you would fix that leak. You never gave up, even after I did. And, It looks like you'll be working down in maintenance, too. Good to know there will be somepony to take care of this place when I'm gone. Well, enjoy your party. You've earned it." The old stallion coughed, and walked away. ~6 years later~ "...Ashes to ashes, dust to dust...and we thank the goddesses Celestia and Luna, and pray that they take the departed under their wings and shelter them, as our own Overmare shelters us..." "Hey." Ecliptic's best friend, Purple Summer, approached him. "I know it's hard to lose so many this close to you. I felt the same when my mom died. But, you know it's not your fault, right?" "No, it is my fault. They all died from radiation poisoning, and it's my job to keep it out. Everyone close to me, except for you and some of the guys from school, is gone, Summer, because I couldn't fix this place fast enough. And those who don't just die? The mutations are getting worse. How many more ghouls, or whatever they're called, are there now because of me?" "Now you know that's not true. You're the only repair pony here, and the stable is huge. No one can expect you to fix all those tiny leaks and everything else that breaks in here. And the ghouls can still live normally. They just need to be a little careful because we can't heal them like a normal pony." "Look, I appreciate your sympathy and all, but I just need to be alone right now. I don't want to argue with you. Not after...this." "It's ok, I understand. See you later?" "Yeah, alright." Ecliptic left for his room.
Julion and and a group of twenty of his mercenaries stood at the edge of Ponyville, they hadn't attacked sooner as they had heard fighting inside the town, but now, it had calmed. "Alright, let's move out." he said, and they walked out calmly from the treeline, from there, they went house to house, killing anypony they met. Julion stood next to the door to the library, the last building to be cleared out, and Bloody 2 bucked the door in, they filed through the door, weapons at ready, but it was obvious that the fighting they had heard was centered here. Knocked over bookshelves, a large crater in the middle of the room, a dead raider at the top of the stairs, body parts laying everywhere. They searched the entire place, but whoever was here had killed everypony inside, and strangely, took no bottlecaps, only weapons, some armor, and some medical supplies. After they had stripped the place of anything useful, they set torches alight and caught the place on fire, soon followed by every other building. As the mercenaries disappeared back into the forest with their new loot, Julion saluted the town before disappearing into the forest, so that all that was left was the burning rubble, and signs, placed to be unavoidable, surrounded the town, each adorned with a raider head and a sign that read, Do not betray the Soldier.
Through his constant tinkering and advice from the medical staff, the young blue stallion's wings were finally up to working order. No one expected the accident, but It hadn't discouraged the pegasus in the least. In 2 months it would finally be his chance to venture out of the stable, a sort of right of passage, but also a necessary journey. His cutie mark was aged a little under a year, and a year earlier was his scheduled departure. In the solitude of the reactor room, he sat in the green glow of his Pip-Buck, studying the readings of the machine.
Julion walked up to the firing range, ready to test one of the recent 'payments' that he received, a working Pipbuck from a stable! He had figured out how to use it, and now was time to test it. He aimed his favorite rifle, Silent Death, downrange, "Release!" he yelled, and a hobbled pony was shoved out at the back of the range, it was a prisoner from one of their more recent raids, and their cells were getting crowded. As the pony tried to escape, Julion activated the 'S.A.T.S.' program that would help him aim. He pulled the trigger with his magic and a blue bolt of energy shot down the range, striking the target in the head, killing him instantly, without leaving a mark. Julion smiled as the captive fell to the ground over 100 meters away, Perfect, he thought.
Ecliptic swept his front leg around, looking for a small fissure through which radiation was seeping in. He brought his leg around to his right, and the tell-tale clicking jumped in intensity. "Gotcha." He said to himself. Floating out a magnifying glass, he scanned the wall for the crack. "There you are." Ecliptic began to chip away at the wall, intending to replace most of it when a deep rumbling echoed from behind the wall. He brought his ear to the wall-and instantly regretted it. A jet of murky brown fluid burst forth, knocking Ecliptic to the ground. He spat out a mouthful and said, "Is...is that water!?" His pipbuck was clicking madly. He quickly cast a simple shield spell to try and keep it contained while he called for assistance.
After several minutes, a small red light sparks up on the interface terminal, followed by a mass of other warnings. It didn't take long to alarm the Pegasus. In a blue streak, the Pegasus went sprinting to the Over-Mares office, pushing past ponies with the engineer pony's pip-buck clicking notoriously. "Sir!" Cobalt panted between his words, trotting to the mare's desk he placed his pip-buck before her. "Ma'am! T-The Backup Water Chip... It's eroding!"
Julian surveyed the road he and some of his mercenaries layed in ambush around. They had recently been hired by some anonymous group who wished to see a group of slavers destroyed and their cargo freed. The supplies they promised in return was another reason to accept the job, other than Julion's loathing for slavers. Of course there were times he was hired by them, but he usually charged them double. He heard the sound of a wagon approaching, and gave a signal for the others to get ready, Julion pulled out Silent Death and held it close to him, blocking the soft glow of magic around it. The wagon came around the corner and it was obvious these were the slavers. Julion aimed his rifle and fired, taking down the whipping pony, soon, the forest was blazing gunfire at the slavers, tearing them to pieces. Julion holstered his rifle and drew out Head Hunter. He cut free the slaves pulling the wagon, then opened the wagon's back, revealing a slaver pointing a gun at his face, but Julion knew how to use his reputation to his advantage and just have a cold, murderous look at the slaver. Fear filled his eyes and he opened his mouth, dropping the weapon, Julion smirked and whacked him upon the head, knocking him unconcious. He then cut free the slaves and made sure that they stayed with his comrades. He put away the knife and tied up the slaver, "Let's go." Julion said, slinging the slaver on his back and the group disappeared in the woods, leaving behind almost ten dead slavers and the wreckage of the wagon.
