We've had areas to discuss the characters, episodes and story about the show, and recently we've made a community discussion area. Recently I've been getting questions about where people should post about their own ideas about things as well as their own headcanons or ideas for the world of Equestria and such. I was thinking of splitting the story discussion area into a canon area and a 'fanon' area. The canon area would be to discuss things that have appeared or have been solidly confirmed in the show. Fanon would be for our own interpretations or indeed our own creations and/or theories about how things work. What are your guys opinions?
I don't really see the need to split it up entirely. If anything, i'd suggest a "fanon" subforum in story discussion.
I'd say just a sub-forum in the Library section. That way, it's covering all sorts of fanon, not just the storryline-based fanon.
wait what? I don't even, as long as I don't have to post my lore on the country I made again I'm good with the sub-forum idea.
That's just the thing B-Dog it's posted as part of my OC list, so if they were to move it they would also be moving my OC list.
Since it's part of your OC and its history, it'll stay with your OC character sheet. If it becomes popular to the point where many people widely accept it as fanon then we'll talk about moving it.
I will also be adding my lore of the Shadowed Forest to that as well, seeing as I keep referring to it in all of the Role Plays I'm in.
generally yes, but there are some difficulties that I see will most likely happen: - if some fanon thing becomes canon (example: derpy). Does then topic about for example derpy go into canon, or dies it stay in fanon because it was created while depry was still fanon - if some scene is on thin line between hinting that something from fanon is in canon or not (example: in FIW series, Pinkie Pie has gypsy magic powers. in episode It's about time, Pinkie Pie had Gypsy "Powers" (but was dressed as gypsy) when fortune telling Twilight about her future. Also, possible hint also from FIW series: When Shining Armor married Cadence, Twilight basically became member of the Royal family, which makes her Princess? in FiW, Twilight becomes Princess after Luna gives her her princessness) - things that are big discussion among fans, if it's canon (Big Mac x Cheerilee for example) so in situations like that. what do we do with topics from fanon subforum? Do we move then to canon, or do they stay in fanon (specially if it's made before it possibly became canon)
Lock the fanon thread, start a canon thread? Simple right? This is exactly why we'd make two sections, no? To avoid this sort of confusion. If a thread is made in fanon, it's discussing fanon. Simple If you mean: "How will we know where to post it?" That's why you're here, Mr. Community Patrol!
If something was to become canon, mods can move the thread I'd say that it should stay in fanon until definitely proved canon. The FIW "references" don't exactly mean it's canon. Pinkie's crazy enough to have a Gypsy outfit and Twilight doesn't yet have the title "Princess". As for the Big MacxCheerilee, I think that pretty much all shipping should go in fanon. It's not certain whether they are still going out. In short, if the show doesn't explicitly show things as canon, it should probably stay in fanon.
how about Rarity x Spike? I would call that canon. Spike, well, we know how he feels about Rarity, and Rarity showed that she cares very much for Spike (even more than rest of mane 6 including twi) in Dragon Quest., and well, Rarity's kisses in Secrets of my exist. @Rarit E: better to discuss these situations now, then when there's ongoing topic to move then back and forward between Canon and Fanon. It wouldn't be fair towards members if, for example, I think that Cheerilee x Big Mac is canon (that I think), but other members thing different, so that my personal opinion is in front of others. I'm human too, so as well as everyone else, I can interpret something from show as confirmed in canon, when someone may thing that that something isn't confirmed by that scene/happening/something in show. Same goes for other staff members.
I think we the fans tend to blow Rarity x Spike out of proportions. I'd consider the shipping aspect to be fanon. The show only has revealed VERY light 'shipping' aspects between Rarity and Spike, if it can even be called that.
fanon and canon aren't decided by what people think. They're decided by what people know. Known couples are canon, Assumed couples are fanon. No amount of fan-based opinions can change that. It's why we call it fanon.
