Now I know this has been asked for before but I searched through Site Discussion but nopony ever brought it up officially in here. Could we please remove the character limit, I know it's not much but it would just remove one of those slight annoyances, it's like if you could get rid of that annoying message asking if you want to restart windows whenever you install software, you know you would get rid of that if you could, it just makes life easier ever so slightly. Now now I know if someone can't say something with more then at least ten characters then it's obviously something that isn't really contributing to the conversation, but sometimes a person just doesn't have anything to add, they just want to say hey, I agree with the post above, or express their joy or displeasure without getting involved, or maybe the thread is just too silly for a full reasoned response, maybe they are shy, it might even be a deterrent to newly registered members who aren't used to it. It's nothing to russle jimmies over, but I feel it would just make things more comfortable, you know?
This idea was started and supported by Caberea. All created for this idea shall go to Caberea. All hail Hypnotoad. (That is to say you have my support...and that there's a hypnotoad in your closet)
This character limit has been brought up before. Former arguments were that if your post wasn't larger than 10 characters, it's not worth posting. I've got nothing against removing it though. To be honest it doesn't matter to me either way.
Hmmmm.... In principle, I think having a character limit encourages users to post more constructively. Some forums have a much larger character limit.
Should we really be making decisions based on purely what other sites are doing though?, what works for them might not necessarily work for here. I mean sure more constructive posts are good, but refusing to allow people to post just because what they have to say isn't long enough just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I like the character limit so people can't just post random crap on the forums. Like what Rarit said, if you don't have at least 10 characters in the message box, it probably isn't worth posting.
We specifically have some users who say unconstructive things on a given topic. The limit is there to prevent people from doing it. Larger character limits exist on other forums. I'm not comfortable with removing the character limit.
Then shouldn't they be dealt with accordingly? instead of limiting our freedoms? we are here to have fun and work together with you to keep it that way, we'll report any wrong doings so it comes to your attention, I have faith, no I know you guys are capable of keeping the peace.
Is having a 10 character limit really limiting your freedoms? 10 Characters is enough to post 'I don't care.' on a topic. It's constructive and let's everyone know how you feel. No need to remove the character limit to appeal to those that would just say 'lol' to a topic, constructive or not.
I concur. oops, has a full stop and everything. again nothing of extreme importance, just one of those small things that make our time here easier and more enjoyable, you know, for us. To show you care.
Must the character limit be sitewide at the very least? Couldn't it be disabled in areas it might get in the way like the forums games area?
I'm more inclined to agree with Berry here, actually. Anything useless below 10 characters can be easily moderated. And there are plenty of users who report posts. I'm in favor of removing the limit.
Going to have to talk to Mike about that. This, however, is something I can agree with. Getting rid of it in Forum Games is the only way I'd approve of it. And have to waste moderator's time by deleting posts that could never have been made in the first place with the limit in place? It seems like busy work to me.
Do you really not respect us enough that you think we would litter the forum with meaningless posts? we come here to enjoy the company of others, not annoy them.
It's not so much that, rather than if we remove the (Very small) character limit, all it'll do is give moderators things to delete (Eventually) that would never have been made in the first place if the character limit was removed. I can understand where you guys are coming from, but all it'd do is cause problems. (However trivial the problem may be.)
Ten characters isn't even that much of a limit. The tried-and-tested methods are used, not for any over-fondness of the status quo, but because they work. Don't take it personally. Trusting you is one thing; trusting anyone on the internet is another. I don't think he meant anything by it. I agree with Ramza here.
