Poppy slid into her desk in the science lab, pulling out her science notebook. She flipped it open and wrote the date on the upper right corner, her writing small and thin. (@Stuffy McPatch )
Francis sat next to her, his lips pursed as he pulled out a notebook of his own, not minding Poppy much.
Poppy glanced at him out of the corner of her eye before tying up her curly hair into a quick bun. Her boyfriend, Evan, disliked the Craw kid. They seemed to get on each other's nerves quite easily. Poppy sighed, and leaned on her hand, waiting for class to start, idly writing in her book. She wore a dark red shirt with a pocket over her chest as well as a simple pair of jeans with the cuffs rolled up, and simple brown shoes. She bit her lip idly as she waited for class to start.
He distractedly clicked his pen, a habit he had picked up when he was younger. "Do you know what we're learning today?"
It took Poppy a moment to realize that he was talking to her. She dragged her eyes up from her composition book to look at him and cocked her head thoughtfully. She reached into her bag and pulled out a planner, skimming through the pages. "Uhh..." she said, stopping when they got to the current date. "Looks like we're dissecting a frog today."
"Hm. That's unfortunate," was all he said, resting his head on his hand and turning back to his own work.
She frowned and opened her mouth to reply before the teacher cleared his throat. "Good morning, everyone. Today, we're going to dissect a frog!" The groans that filled the classroom were ones of disgust and the teacher raised his hands in surrender. "Here. I'll pass out some worksheets, and you and your partner will identify the organs from the sheet in the frog. Partners that I will announce right now!" "Suzy Park and Adam French, Ellia Mercury and Jade Eloquence, Dennis Noel and Peter Madrid, Francis Craw and Poppy Abernathy, Avice Curnow and Bert Cunningham," The teacher continued to rattle off names while Poppy sighed and rested her chin in her hand.
"What were you saying earlier? About it being unfortunate that I was Evan's girlfriend?" Poppy drummed her fingers on the table, looking a little annoyed.
He grinned slightly, but it was likely out of amusement at her irritation. "Yes, that's what I said," he replied.
"He's an *squee!*, is what I mean. And super annoying." He slid the frog between them. "That's what I mean."
"Certainly," she said, pulling the frog to the center of the table with quick fingers. She glanced at the worksheet for a moment and inwardly sighed. Making a deft cut along the sternum of the frog, cutting first with the scalpel and then using the scissors, she picked up the probe tool and pointed at three organs. "Heart," she said quietly, mostly for Francis' benefit. "Small intestine. Liver." She returned to her notebook to draw a diagram of the creature, her pencil strokes easy and practiced.
Francis drew his own diagram, albeit he seemed to be doing a great job, as drawing was not one of his better skills.
Poppy bent over the frog, frowning. She tucked a loose curl behind her ear and used the probe to push aside the skin. "Okay," she murmured thoughtfully, cocking her head. "Lungs, gall bladder, pancreas..." She looked up at Francis and offered him the probe. "Here. Take a look."
He took it, and began poking around. It was very obvious that this bored him, and he returned the probe quickly.
