Okay, guess we all know those infamous mass scenes that would be a lot emptier if each pony were there only once, right? So where do those extra ponies come from?

My theory is a spell known as "multipony". Basically, unicorn ponies can create temporal copies of themselves or other ponies with this spell. Might come in handy, at least it works. They probably teach each other this spell in school already or something, I mean, it always makes for good pranks, right? What the clones are capable of doing depends on how much magic is put into making them. I think a fully interactive multipony requires constant "remote control" and can therefore exist only once whereas simpler instances, for example for a cheering audience, are "fire-and-forget" multiponies of which several can exist for some time.

The uncrowned queen of self-multiponication is Colgate hooves down. She can countertroll Celestia by populating her audience with at least eight multiponies of herself at once, not counting possible multiponies of non-unicorns. This screengrab (like many others) also shows that Lyra doesn't shy away from pulling off this trick with Lyra multiponies either. We already know about her magical powers since we've seen her in Cloudsdale. The cloudwalking spell seems to be easy enough, and who says that Twilight is the only pony who can teleport (which would explain how Lyra got up there in the first place)?

Speaking of powerful unicorns, how does The Great and Powerful Trixie™ advertise for her show? [urlhttp://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/10043]Multiponies. Still doesn't explain two Daisies, three Bon Bons... (The real Daisy and Bon Bon hang out with each other, by the way.)

Twinkle, in my opinion, is a different case. She prefers to multiply other ponies, often upon request. Explains certain occurrences in the first link I posted: the multiple Ditzies are probably fanservice. Or this one. Carrot Top bragged that she could race a multipony at the Running of the Leaves. Bon Bon agreed to supply a multipony and had Twinkle (just off to the left) copy her. Whether that's actually Carrot Top or another multipony courtesy of Sparkler remains unclear as of now.

Twinkle also helped keep the bronies away from the Wonderbolts at the Grand Galloping Gala's VIP section [urlhttp://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/14868]by multiponying enough Ditzies to make looking for her unnecessary because she'd be all over the place. The other fan favourites, Colgate and Lyra, added a couple of themselves for good measure. Oh, and Soarin' requested a Soarin' from Twinkle so that nopony notices when he gets himself an apple pie (especially not Lyrica who'd chat with an advanced chatbot-style multipony unknowingly). Guess Hoity Toity took similar measures to keep admirers away from himself—have the audience crowded with brony favourites so they'll stay away from him. Note that Twinkle and Colgate got front row seats.

A scene in which multiponying goes haywire. Colgate stays out of the mayhem by sending a hornless multipony, Lyra one-ups her with multiple hornless Lyras (Lyrae?), and the present unicorns (including Twinkle for a change) multipony themselves to try and stay out of trouble.

In Rarity's imagination (mind you, she's a unicorn, too), multiponying sort of gets out of hoof as well. Colgate makes up large parts of the audience again, Twinkle makes the ponies dizzy with Dizzies (and the bronies happy with more Ditzies), Seafoam experiments with resizing Cloud Kicker (and asking passer-bys which one is the real deal). In real life, Carrot Top orders a copy of herself to increase her chances to get Twilight's extra gala ticket. Who multiponied her is up to speculation.

Speaking of Twilight Sparkle, does she use the multipony spell? Guess she steers clear of it, lest she overcrowds Ponyville or something. On the other hoof, there's this scene. How to get a significantly large audience? Get a couple of ponies to attend your speech—and then get Twinkle (she's the only other unicorn present, and there's ony one of her) to help you multipony them. After all, you can impossibly have too many Bon Bons, right? (The real Carrot Top is probably guarding her fridge, by the way.) It's Spike who's speaking to the ponies, Twilight is busy keeping the multiponies a) at bay and b) credible.

How about multiponying mane cast ponies? Well, at the Running of the Leaves, Lyra seems to play a prank on Bon Bon by multiponying another Rainbow Dash racing past her friend. Rarity could have multiponied herself for Hoity Toity's order, but a good multipony would keep her busy as much as making the dresses herself. Applejack was too proud to get some additional Applejacks from Twinkle to do the applebucking. And fortunately, multiple Pinkie Pies appear in a game only and are not recommended in real life.

or simply, the creators are lazy? and copy and paste like in the old days for long corridors?

or Equestria is so interbred that well............you know you get lots of ponies that are the same, and in imagination, you pull from the world around you

Come on, it's obviously like in our world - there's "doppelgangers" that look alike. Seeing that it's a cartoon and you can't really define their face to look any different, they look so alike - the same. As for the body - there's no discussion about it - they all look alike, just with different shades and stuff.

I think all turtles look the same, maybe it's a similar concept? And from an objective view, all the ponies really are just a mix and match deal, they've even re-used cutie marks a few times.

Why are there clones in Equestria? That's easy! Everyone knows that Princess Celestia is using clones to bolster the Horde's numbers for the invasion!

    Yay, for the Horde!

But yeah, Celestia is just cloning ponies for the next great war, that's all. Nothing to see here, move along!

May the horde fail... Alliance forward!

No. IT ain't clones. IT ain't magic. IT ain't logic. IT... is the lack of time in development.

Well, that's obvious, Jaret. :p But we're just messing around with silly theories for the sake of it. At least I think that's what everyone is doing. lol

Maybe some female ponies are capable of parthenogenesis.
