Out of curiosity, how many of you guys consider yourselves to be closeted bronies, have you told any of your friends/family yet, why you're uncomfortable, and what you think made you really like the show?

I'll answer first, I suppose: I consider myself a closeted brony, I have told some of my closer friends about it (mainly females, but I have told some friends about it), I'm uncomfortable in telling people about it due to it being strikingly different to most things I'm into and being a tad over self-conscious about it, and I'm not really sure what made me like the show... I just watch the first two episodes and I was hooked! I have no idea why though... but I do think it may have to do with the innocence and morals of the show, most cartoons nowadays lack this!

Anyway, I'd love to see what you guys say.

I'm not in the stable anymore. I was when I first got into it, but as my passion for the show grew, I started talking about to people I knew. I used to never let anypony into my life, but now I don't care what people think of me.

So in short, nope not in the stable anymore.

I HOPE you become more open about it,in your own time though.

Thanks for sharing that with me. :]

I hope I can become more open in the future as well, but I don't wanna seem like I'm shoving my love of ponies down people's throats, y'know? I dislike overly flamboyant people.

Hm, I'd say that I'm semi-stabled. I have told some people about it, however, I have kept it secret from others.

I am completely out of the stable. I kept it secret at first, not cause I cared what people thought, but because I wanted to catch the surprise of all my classmates finding out on camera. I wear a bright coloured Fluttershy T-shirt and I havn't even noticed any weird looks from anyone. I even make my first 2 conversions today. In fact i'm gonna start a topic about 2.

Yeah, I'm still in the stable. However, there really isn't anyone for me to tell right now. I used to hide going on EPR from my brother, but I stopped caring and now I go on whenever I want. I don't think he's even noticed, so that's good!

I guess I am but it's more or less something that hasn't come up yet. I know the reaction from my parents would be a raised eyebrow at worst and I'm pretty convinced I could get my dad to site down and watch it if I really tried as he used to watch The Powerpuff Girls. My brother could be easily be handled because one of his friends frequents 4chan and knows of the fandom. I'm also pretty sure his friend is a brony himself.

Basically, I don't go around announcing it. I'll just let it get out if it does and handle it gracefully. I'm really not worried in the slightest about it getting around if and when it does.

Closet - my Fiancée knows & she wasn't happy I'd bought a T-shirt (see my other post) - watching the show she's ok with as she knows I'm a massive fan of animation.

If my T-shirt had arrived for the weekend when I DJed at a friends event he had put on an was Fancy Dress a loads of friend would of seen it but due to the the fact my Tee only arrived today only my other half & everypony.com people know

I am proud to say that I am not in the stable anymore. I have told my best friend and my mother and surprisingly, they didn't think I was a freak! My mom encourages me to buy a shirt and my friend doesn't really care. I linked her the episode "Sonic Rainboom" but she hasn't watched yet. I am proud of myself in knowing that I can be so open about this. I just want people to know that I like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but not think of me differently. I still have the same personality, I just love this show and I don't think there's anything abnormal about it. I'm living my life the way I want to!!!

I guess i can be in and out of the stable, since most of my friends know i'm a brony as a few of them who are and love the show as do i. But as goes for my family? Well, My older bro kinda knows but he just somewhat concern, sometimes. He knows it's a secret but i don't think he would rat outta on me. I'd be more comfortable in to tell my mother, maybe in the future when i build up the nerve to tell her but Oh man, i can't tell my father that i watch this show. The minute he finds out. I'l never hear the end of it. for almost a year that this show has been out and a brony since November of 2010, I grow worried most of the time when my folks find out. I drew a pinkie pie draw back in april or may and my brother founded it under the xbox and had to announce it to the world and told me that i had to stop drawing/watching my little pony but thank god his friends were distracted and were like "huh?"

Hmm, I usually don't actively try to make a secret out of my interests, but I don't feel the need to announce them to the world, either. I just know that the people I know are not interested in the same stuff I am, so I leave it at that.

I'm not closeted at all. I just tell people that I like My Little Pony, if they believe me then they just have to deal with it. I'm not changing what I like so that people won't think I'm different. I am different, and I'm proud of that because of what makes me different: things like My Little Pony.

My mum had an amusing reaction when she saw me on these forums, and that's probably the worst thing that's happened so far.

That's cool, I have yet to open up to many people about it. ^^"

Wow, really? That sounds pretty cool, dude. I think i saw video of you on YouTube unwrapping a Fluttershy Shirt, was that you by any chance? XD

Stabled? I've seen that being used some places.

Yeah, I've noticed that I stopped really caring if people were seeing me log on EPR too. X3

That's understandable, and I'm glad you're honestly that comfortable with your family about it if they find out.... I use to watch Powerpuff Girls too actually XD Great Show.

Wow, your Fiancée knows? That's really cool! I informed my girlfriend the other day about my brony-ism, she thoguth it was cute because I was acting really shy about it. ^^"

That's great! I personally love that episode! XD I'm having a bit of a hard time accepting that MLP is a part of my personality, but I'm sure I'll learn to accept it, thank you for the post. :]

I agree, but I have yet to tell anyone other than people in my close group of friends DX

Jeez, that sucks :/ I haven't been a brony long enough to actually be concerned about these type of things, plus I'm the oldest child in my house, so my younger siblings probably wouldn't mess with me if they knew I like the show... I think they do know a little bit about me liking the show, I mean, my sister asked me what a cutie mark was and I told her everything I knew. XD

I respect that, we don't want to be annoying/too flamboyant.

Well that's good, and pardon me for giggling at your mom finding you on the forums. X3

I'm in the stable. I haven't told anyone that I'm a brony. The only IRL conversation I had about bronies so far was with a friend once when we were watching The Colbert Report and Stephen gave his brony shout-out. I happened to ask him if he knew who bronies are. He said he didn't and I briefly explained it to him, but I presented it in such a way that made it look like it was coming from an outsider's perspective. He looked a little surprised, but he didn't say anything negative. I suggested he google it for more information, and he said he might do that. I haven't heard anything about it since.

Being secretive isn't exclusive to just my bronydom. I'm a very private individual and have always kept my interests to myself unless someone asks me about it first. I'm not one to readily divulge information about myself, unless it happens to be asked, or if some conversation about said subject is already in progress. In other words, I'm not going to randomly blurt out, "I'm a brony," but if by some weird chance, which I highly doubt will occur, a conversation about bronies came up, then I may say something, depending on the context of the conversation.

I think I'm more likely to encounter a random brony wearing a shirt with a recognizable symbol/phrase/character, than a conversation miraculously popping up. Also, if you want to be more open about it, that's fine, but by no means should you feel obligated to do so. I've noticed a trend lately of some members saying that one shouldn't be a closet brony, as if it's wrong. This irks me a bit. There is nothing wrong with feeling uncomfortable revealing it. I think some assume that if you're hiding it, you're ashamed. Such is not always the case. I'm not ashamed, but I'm not going to go around announcing it either. Basically, if you want to be more open about it, do it for your own reasons, not because someone is stressing that there is some sort of importance in doing so.

What really made me like the show was how it doesn't insult the intelligence of the viewer. The animation is very good. The characters are interesting and relatable. The plots in some of the episodes are relatable as well. I also like how they throw in references that only older members of the audience will understand.

    Story time!

Okay, when I first saw ponies browsing /b/ I was originally like "WTF is this pony bull*squee!*." I talked to my /b/ro at school about and he didn't know. The next day he came to school and came up to me and said "Bro, I understand the ponies. Watch it." So I gave it a shot.

    And I loved it!

So, naturally, I did what I do with things I love. I went on FB and sent it to a friend. He loved it too. I sent it to another and he loved it. I then made my FB status the first episode and raved about it completely. The next day at school I told literally anypony who would listen to watch the show and that it was amazing. Got a few quick conversions, but nopony very hardcore into it.

Now I carry around pony toys on me at almost all times and have a pony shirt.

I'd say I'm out of the stable :D

Thanks for the big post, I was hoping for more of these, I love reading!

Anyway, I agree with you completely about the whole 'looking down upon closeted bronies' thing, it's like if homosexuals looked down upon one another for not wanting to tell everyone about their sexuality. I also think it'd be much more likely to encounter another 'obvious' brony rather than stumbling upon the subject in a conversation. And I must say that I completely agree with you about how you feel for the show, most cartoons today just seem to insult the intelligence of the viewer and the plots are somewhat crappy at times. Anyway, thanks for the fantastic post.

In all honesty, I originally stumbled upon ponies on deviantART, y'see I'm a frequent user and have been for a few years and dA is known to overuse some memes. The reason why I started watching show came from a somewhat poor reason that I'm not proud of, but it's past: I wanted to watch at least an episode or two so I could be a more valid troll when I agreed to help my friend invade "Ponychan" as it's called with some minor troll efforts for pure lulz... I think we can all assume what happened next.

But! I am happy that you are comfortable enough to own toys AND wear the shirts around :D That's some real support for the show and I respect that, Thanks for the cool post.

I'm mostly in the stable currently, and I don't think it'll change much.

The situation in Germany is a bit different from that in the USA. MLP:FiM is still mostly unknown except for some toys at Toys "Я" Us and that infamous magazine that seems to not have changed its target audience since the switch to 4G two issues earlier. The show itself has yet to be aired which won't happen before September 17th (the same day that season 2 premieres in the USA), so the only people who know about MLP:FiM are a few girls, a few parents, some general MLP collectors and those who have become bronies one of the regular ways for Germans (all of which involve YouTube). If you mention MLP to anyone else, they will inevitably think of G1 and the pony toys from the 80s. Do not expect to meet someone who has actually watched one single episode of MLP:FiM or at least spotted it in their TV magazine.

Germany has yet to go through the bronies-becoming-a-mass-phenomenon line of phases the USA has undergone (including mentions of bronies on TV). And since this is Germany (and considering RTL's "all gamers are unkempt, smelly nerds with no life" Gamescom report), this will not happen in a positive way. Period.

As long as it's dangerous to be a brony in Germany, I shall remain in the stable.
