Well, any Community Moderator or Administrator should be able to close a thread for you. Here's the list of Staff members, by the by; http://www.everypony.com/forums/showgroups.php. As you go through the Forums, you should be able to tell whether somebody's a Staff member by the colour of their name, too.
Before I became a mod, I would just press the Report button when I felt something should be done about a thread- for example, if I felt it should be moved to a different sub-forum or locked/deleted due to it getting out of hand. You can find the report button right under every post, with the royal guard beside it. Just drop a description of why you think the action should be taken.
Otherwise, you could see whether there are any staff members online, and ask them directly to help you.

Just wanna point out that the forum mods also get an instant popup alert (and emails) when you report stuff so you also wouldn't need to worry how often they check the report queue if it was something urgent you wanted looked at.
