    It's probably not a far fetch to say that much of the new users joining are bots:

    And so on so forth, completely nonsensical names like that are almost always bots.
    If anything it makes the forum appear more active, but you're going to need some more bot protection - they always go after new boards.

    Though the VB we're using must work pretty well to confuse the bots, very few of them get threads off - I've also seen one mistake their albums as a place to post threads.
