I want to share my input about the ecosystem.
    It's horrid.
Look at that. They're scared of the forest due to it having creatures they don't know, true, but I recall one pony stating in a scared manner "Everything grows and lives on it's own!".
Honestly, the animals are mentally damaged.
They have no instincts, the ponies need to send them to hibernation and wake them up as well.
Not to mention this overlord-like ecosystem includes weather controlled and conducted by the pegasi.
I know this is just a cartoon, but as a researcher of random fields of science (Sociology, Memetics, Ecology, Botanism, etc.) it bugs me.
    Insect pun intended.
What do you think of the ecosystem?

Well the first thing that's odd about it is that the sentient species is herbivore
It's fairly odd to find an ecosystem where the most intelligent creature is that which is at the bottom of the food chain, predators are the ones that need to intelligent to survive

Yeah, I've noticed how controlled it is, but the animals seem intelligent (the rabbit that is always around Fluttershy) so maybe that's why they have less instincts than a wild animal.

Yes, the ecosystem is terrible, but is it really anypony's fault? Who knows why it is the way it is? Either way, the ponies have to work really hard to keep the ecosystem functioning like a normal one, so you shouldn't go insulting it. I'm sure they keep it naturally working at all times, so the weather thing isn't really a problem.

It's a children's programme. Admittedly, it is all a bit skew-wiff, but that adds to the charm of it!

Heh, kind of funny - There are way more dangerous creatures than ponies, but ponies seem to be on the top. They reign Equestria. This begs the question why there are no raids of, lets say, single attacking Dragons or Ursa Majors against them. It is interesting, really.
Nobody vanquished an Ursa Major, and Twilight was the first one to "defeat" an Ursa Minor. I'd love to see more of the Ursa family in the show in the second season - this seems like an interesting race to look forward to.

Oh, and the overall Ecosystem... Oh God, never have i seen something as horribly made as the Equestrian Ecosystem. There is no balance at all in it. At all.

I think this system is comfortable for ponies and other animals but of course really unreal (human could not create such a system - and here ponies are better than us!). And if ponies suddenly disappeared (for example because of meteorite's strike, many volcano's eruptions or nuclear war) all animals would die too... And then would die plants... And everything!

  9. It was sort of interesting how that one dragon created that thick smog in the sky and was scolded by Fluttershy... If they didn't intervene would Ponyville just be left under the smog forever? Maybe Celestia keeps these monsters in line behind the scene. After all, she does seem to have limitless power.

And I'd like to bring in physics - just watch the video on Youtube about it, it's hilarious.
"Fluttershy lands on a group of butterflies, thus saving her life. However, these butterflies would have to have been going at 1000 Gs to do such, which is impossible.
One solution is that they may be composed of dark matter."
Half of the solutions for the physical impossibilities involve dark matter, which I find funny.
And you're right, Jaret. If the show was realistic the ponies would have had some outside force aid their rise to a high position and they'd have some sort of weapon other than magic.

Realistically, the animals could wake up on their own, but as Fluttershy implied, they couldn't get rid of the clouds before they were awake. It could just be that they wake them up earlier than they would normally so that they don't drown, while still getting Spring in "on time".

(Sorry if I'm bumping an old topic.)

It's not like this thread was three months old with mold growing all over it.

Have there really BEEN any predators which could come along and eat them?

Honestly, the only predator I remember in the whole series had no teeth.

If there are no (substantially dangerous) predators, there's nothing preventing them from becoming the dominant race.

I thought there were tons; dragons, hydras, cockatrice and space bears (sounds cooler). Ponies are weak in comparison, but humans are the dominant species of Earth, and we're not very scary from a physical perspective. But,like ponies, we've got other skills, like intelligence and dexterity. It's a case of who needs muscles when you've got a gun.

Besides, pony magic. Nobody argues with pony magic. What I would like to see is a pony civil war between the 3 pony types. Strength vs Flight vs Magic.

I'm tired, I'll shut up now.

EDIT: Woah, imagine if ponies developed THUMBS! They would be unstoppable.

It could be the planet is sparsely populated - which wouldn't quite explain how they keep bumping into Hydras, Ursa Minors, Dragons, cockatrices, etc., etc. But it would help explain why they haven't been eaten yet. Also, I haven't seen other species use magic yet, so maybe only ponies can. Plus, perhaps there's some calming effect on this planet. Except for the Hydra, none of the monsters were really that vicious unless provoked in some manner.

And as for being vegetarians - I remember Pinkie talking about hot dogs in Fall Weather Friends. True, hot dogs are exactly meat, per say, and you could make them with vegetables, but I seem to recall another mention of meat that I can't fully remember right now. Maybe later.

The ecosystem doesn't bother me a whole lot - I'm more bothered by hammers in Equestria.

So we have omnivore ponies in a fragile ecosystem?
I never thought about it like that. o_O

Erm, maybe the planet's much smaller than Earth?
Of course, then gravity'd not be strong enough to hold all that...

I think it's fine the way it is. I mean if we want to be literal, can a pegasus really fly 760mph to break the sound barrier?
