EP Theme Ideas

A while back, I was informed that there were plans for two EP themes that my predecessor Mike had said he'd make; Rainbow Dash and Luna. These new themes were requested and he never got round to them.

Well, being the arty-farty type, I figured I could give it a go and let my skills make something unique. I even went one better and suggested a third 'Changeling' theme too. After all, I get trained on how to make a Computer Game menu look good in my Uni course, why not a website? Although, we also covered designing websites too. Because...there was a gap in the schedule, I guess.

So, I figured I'd give it a shot and flex a little bit of creative muscle.

My starting point is my favourite of all the EP themes, Spring. OK, it goes further than it has my OC in it. You see, The Poetic Pony made a thread a long while back where you can submit your OC and he'd make a specialised vector for that OC. And he did a wonderful job. He then went on to do the same but in a simplistic silhouette for every OC he'd vectored to create the EP Banner we see in the Spring Theme. And I think it's absolutely perfect for this site.

When you think of 'Everypony', its a word that speaks about a group. It's not one pony, it's a load of them. It's a collective, a group. Poetic's banner is perfect for showing that because it's a big group photo of OC's from the members of the time. The Members got their little spotlight. Furthermore, it's a bright, colourful and interesting logo for a site. Because each character is a silhouette, the amount of detail isn't overly complicating the image and isn't making each character fall into an amorphous blob when together. It's the best logo for Everypony.com I've ever come across. And believe, I know. Myself and former admin Foxytail have tried to come up with a better one numerous times.

Everypony translates better to community than it does to wings and horseshoes.

So, I tried following the same path with these tests. Each theme has titular characters, sure, but the community OC's will be interacting or doing something in their respective images.

Yeah, I'm planning to do Poetic's thing again and take in OC's to add to each themes logo. While the 'official' logo will still be the one Poetic made, I figured you might like getting a similar treatment. Or see your character as a changeling. One or the other.

So, the designs I came up with are:
Note: All OC's present in these examples are merely there to be an example for the eventually submitted OC's to go in each logo. Each OC's design has been borrowed from the original artwork created by Poetic for the Spring EP Logo and so are correct as of that time. Alterations to these characters since then may not have been accounted for. Because I know you'll ask, the OC's present in each image are below each image.

Rainbow Dash Theme
[IMG]
OCs present: Rex and Dodo

Princess Luna Theme
[IMG]
OCs present: Janemba and Blazing Dawn

Changeling Theme
[IMG]
OCs present: Poetic and Snow (Roughly reimagined as changelings)

Comments, suggestions and ideas are greatly welcomed. These are just to test the waters and pick these apart to be the best logo's we could possibly get from each idea. One we have a fuller idea of what each theme will look like, hopefully down to the icons and buttons, we will start looking for OC submissions. This process may be rather slow as it's currently just me. If you have an interest in help create OC silhouettes, please give me a shout.

Otherwise, tell me what you think. Be kind...

Oh my gawd my OC looks adorable! The Changeling one is really cool. I can help with the.. um... silho-something images. I made one after Poetic did mine.

Here's Poetic's

I'm glad you like it. It's my favourite too.

Thanks for offering. I'll come poke you when we get to that stage.

The Luna one looks neat
A dark colored theme would be a nice mixup of the bright ones we currently have

I like the changeling one, Tyro.

Although, A Spike theme would be neat.

Heh, I absolutely love the Luna idea so far! I've always been a fan of the night, it's not really surprising I'd like that theme. It looks so calm n' peaceful, and the colour scheme'd look great for the site, with a starry night sky for the background... Heh, I'd use it.

Definitely wouldn't mind a best-pony theme either. Really captures Dashie's best-ponyness. (Also, am I seeing Wonderbolt Haze!!? Amazement is had.)

I could also help with vectoring, but I may not be able to do it all the time (school is time consuming).

In the layout menu (which I found only a couple days ago), I noticed a layout called "New Everypony Spring". First, is this a new layout? Second, I like it because it has a more modern look to it. Many of the other layouts look rather ugly, like the Pinkie Pie one. I feel like other themes could get an update. I mean, why is the Everypony Default layout banner talk about winter? The winter isn't year-round! XD
Anyways, most of the themes could use better styles, new banners, and overall, more flow.
Perhaps there should be a "Theme Review Team". Or people can simply give their own reviews on them right here, which I might do later.

If you see this text, you are not on the original Everypony Spring layout.

Very true and now you're getting two. So, there's something.

A Spike one could be interesting. Partly because we can either do Spike, the lovable baby dragon, or S.P.I.K.E, the automated bot that operates on the site. Either way, I see lots of OC's turned into Baby Dragons. That will have to be on the backburner for a while.

Thanks to RP's, the various critic shows I watch constantly and EP, I'm kinda nocturnal too. It comes with trying to keep up with Americans you want to talk to.

But, I deep purple background seems relaxing, I do agree there. A calming, glinting EP theme. Making sure the forum itself stands out will be interesting.

All right. The one I'm specifically referring to is listed as 'Everypony Network Spring'.

Anyway, you seem to have stumbled on the themes of the past, made by Grey and Mike, the previous Tech Admins.

New Everypony Spring I remember being a sort of experiment from Grey. It added a 'Start Menu' and more of a task bar at the top. It's not so much 'New' as 'Alternative'. It's still unfinished as each box in the top was meant to have an OC to represent each part of the site in it. I think it was considered overkill eventually and left for whatever reason. Considering that the Nav bar does pretty much everything the extra bar does in that theme, it seems a little redundant to me. Again; I remember it being Grey playing around with an idea.

The other themes were originally meant to be made with the Seasons in mind and made way before Poetic made what I'm going to try and base the themes I make on. They were made by anyone that could be wrangled in for the job and EP had no official set of aesthetics that it could claim to be its own. So, it fluctuates all over the place with the vague theme of a particular season. The idea appeared to be that a user could then alter the theme to reflect the time or have various character ones. The old ones are shaky but there's no consistencies between themes. I partly blame that on no 'Official Symbol/Logo' for EP until now until I just pointed and went "That one!".

But, hey! They were clear and functional. They did the best that they can with what they had.

Themes should have some more consistency. Some should be redone, or thrown out altogether. There was a lot I wanted to do with them, among many other things with this site...but in the end there aren't too many web-savvy people on staff, so during my administration I was mostly alone... In the end it just came down to me not having time anymore. :/ I will agree that Pinkie is pretty horrid...not one of my best ideas. Pink is not really a web-friendly color.

The EP Network Default should probably be renamed to winter or something, or change the banner as Nerdus suggested.

Anyhow...my advice to you tyro is don't put yourself over your head with requests of themes or however you're gonna go about this. Have you gotten yourself familiar with theme building, templates, CSS, style variables, etc in vB? Trust me, it's not really fun to dive in blindly.

What program are you using to make these banners?

Not entirely yet. I figured a smart approach would be to create a base sample that could be picked apart and then extrapolate a list of areas and skills I will need to achieve what I'm expecting. From there, I can make sure I know what I need to learn in as much detail as I need it.

But, I don't think anyone blame you for the presentation of the previous themes. If I can go back and redo previous themes, I will but I'll focus on these three first. I'm sure I can handle this and the site as a whole, especially with some volunteers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

A Discord is another good idea. Again, will have to be saved for much further down the line.

All three of them were made with Paint Tool SAI but there's plenty of other programs that could do the same thing.

Good idea. Get concepts down first. And yea, don't worry about the old ones now. :p Re-doing themes is just busy work when new and refreshing ideas can be explored instead.

Im also for a discord one and i was thinking it could be one of those dark style ones with mostly blacks and greys (similar to what the changeling one would be). though instead of the light green in the changeling theme its replaced with a darker red.
