Okay, so like I said in a previous thread, and because a cute bird told me to, this thread should be made for various reasons. It'll be nice to get some discussion going, so... what is everyone's thoughts on Feminism and the Feminist Movement?
My personal opinion is that it has somehow moved past what it was supposed to be (equality for women), and morphed into something unpleasant and ugly (men are the enemy, let's screw them over however we can).
I think they've accomplished everything they set out to do haven't they? I dunno I don;t follow it that much. All I know is that the feminists at school are a bit crazy. In Life Orientation class they'll randomly start talking and occasionally chant "Women power" "Yeah we deserve equal rights!" Blah blah blah and I just sit there and think....didn't you get that when South Africa became a democracy? Nowadays it's more along the lines of Affirmative action. Feminists are just sorta there in this country but it's the people of colour who are the ones getting more advantages. Not meaning to be racist obviously.
Black civil rights...there was one faction fighting for equality...while others wanted supremacy....(Malcolm x)....I believe the feminist movement is the same...unfortunately it appears that the equality faction is out numbered....that's all I have to say
All of the IRL feminists I've met are absolutely wonderful. :3 But On Tumblr there is a breed festering which is not quite so pleasant. Then again there's also a culture of 'Anti-Feminists' That just believe all feminists hate men and so therefore these two collide and just look stupid. :O This breed will eventually die out. And they can all get back to loving the crap out eachother amirite? /wishful thinking
There's a large feminist presence here at u of t, although the bulk of them are pretty rational. To some extent anyway. They keep to themselves in any case. As long as they're not being intrusive, I've no issues with them. Everyone has the right to personal opinion. Sent from my SGH-T899M using Tapatalk
I'd like to think that the majority of tumblr movements are usually completely misguided or way to 'extreme' for lack of a better description, so I personally tend to exclude them. I guess it just comes with the territory of the internet being "It's the internet, speak for the moment, there are no consequences." As for the feminist movement in general, I can't say I've seen or heard anything done that would make me believe it's a movement not worth supporting. Misogyny, especially when talking about job/employment opportunity equality is probably what disgusts me the most. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
From what I can tell, the world is still pretty unfair towards women in ways that I don't like. Plenty of cases where women aren't paid for as much as men in similar job scenarios or are still not respected in certain fields because they are generally thought of as "male-oriented". I lot of cases where rape victims are blamed for being raped or at least barely cared about while the rapist gets off relatively scott-free. I remember reading a case from a long time ago, where there were discussions about abortion being held by representatives or senators and not a single woman was present. I think most feminists just want social equality and want to disrupt the cultural patriarchy, which can be just as damaging to men as well. Even on Tumblr I actually find a lot of really rational arguments for why feminism is a good thing, rarely ever the stereotype people make them out to be. Tumblr's a big place though so maybe I just know where to find them. I think it's wrong to generalize and categorize feminists as crazy men hating female supremacists the same way it's wrong to classify all bronies as misogynistic, homophobic, socially awkward perverts (which we are by a lot of people I might add.)
Feminists: WOMYN ARE SERPERIOR. ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH. DADDY ISSUES, DADDY ISSUES, WOMYN WOMYN WOMYN. I HATE MEN! DOWN WITH MEN! WOMYN. Reasonable, intelligent people: Hey, we'd like equality. I think that's about right. Not saying all Feminists are psychotic, either.
Feminism, like all movements aiming for equality in a diverse group, is afflicted by a minority of people who misunderstand some of its ideas and use those ideas contrary to the original goal of the group. That said, anti-male extremist feminists are not the worst of the bunch. I can't believe I haven't seen anyone point this out yet, but I'll lay it down right here: The worst thing about some "feminists" is that they are homophobic or racist. Seriously, I do not believe you are a true feminist if you are not also a humanist. Real feminism argues in favor of equal rights for all humans across the entire gender/sex spectrum. There can be no exceptions. You must believe in equal rights for all races, genders, sexes, orientations, and every single other category of the human race. However, that is also the good news. Most feminists are not the crazy people you see quoted on tumblr or elsewhere. Most feminists are the humanist activists, all over the place. I myself consider myself a feminist (for background, I am sexually male but do not identify with gender or sexuality). Feminism is a fight for human equality.
I like what you posted there. I'm not so much a feminist as you are, but I do agree with equality, it's something I feel very strongly about. I suppose I like justice and fairness the most so equality is one of those that fall in automatically. That's why things like affirmative action while in some areas do make sense, mostly just piss me off.
I don't call myself a feminist because I don't like how it implies that you're only in it for the rights of one gender. I know that a good chunk of feminists are reasonable people who still want equality, and it's largely a matter of labels, but I really don't want to value the rights of one gender higher than the other. I feel like we've moved past that in the western world, or at least where I'm from. Now, have I experienced sexism? Sure! Plenty! Because some people are jerks, and there are some social issues I'd like to get rid of (for example, people trying to dictate how I present myself based on my gender). But as a Danish woman in 2013, I am in no way oppressed, and I don't like implying that I am. Apart from what Dilly Star already mentioned regarding racism and such, I also think a big issue with feminism is erasure of male victims. Also, negativity towards human sexuality. And TERFs.
Feminism is dumb, feminist are some weird hivemind group that just target and lash out at anything that shows white hetero males as the bad guy. Everyone should be a equalist, but equality is impossible, so why bother.
I find it really strange that so many people are just casually replacing misandrists with feminists. Don't you think it's kind of hypocritical for bronies to be doing that? Afterall, how mad do we get when everyone associates the weird, misogynistic pedophile bronies with the rest of us? I think everyone here needs to read this before continue to bash a movement is already involved with what everyone is saying they should be doing.
I've seen feminist jump at anything that isn't deemed positive to the feminist idea. I'm all for people be equals, it will never happen, but that's a different topic. Maybe it's just that most of the feminist I see happen to be the tumblr variety, but they have just the dumbest distorted view of things when it comes to men and women. One being the existence of rape culture, that is a load of crap or that all victims of rape are right and any attempt to say other wise grants you the rape apologist label. If a one gets black out drunk by her own choice she regardless if she'll admit to it or not is putting herself at risk. Sure the man is at fault for doing it in the first place, but women should take some responsibility when it comes to their protection. I have examples but they would be shot down by feminist because they, I'm actually not sure what they would say, so I guess I'll bring them here. Let's say I buy a new stereo and put it in the front car seat, I then leave it sit there all night. Now there is no guarantee someone will steal it, but leaving it unguarded is kinda of a dumb idea, sure the thief shouldn't take it, but it won't stop them if they really wanted it. Stuff like that, feminist refuses to see something like that and only blame the man for something. To clarify my point, if a women goes anywhere and gets drunk to the point where she is not coherent or able to defend herself, she is somewhat responsible because she put herself into that position knowing the threat exists. Think I got of topic again.
Rape culture isn't saying the woman was at fault. Rape culture is the fact that most people defend the guy and say he ISN'T at fault. Which he is. Guns don't kill people. Internal organ damage does.
Everyone says the tumblr feminist are bad but I don't see that. Then again I mainly see tumblr's like this. It's really to imagine that some of these injustices or stereotypes against women happen but they do. It's kind of sad to say that this site has shown me that they still exist. The thing is about rape culture it's not about women not taking any responsibility for what happened, it's generally about women who get raped getting fully blamed for it while the rapist either gets off relatively scott-free for sexual assault or is seen in a sympathetic light, while the woman get ****-shammed by peers to ridiculous extents. There is no compassion for the victim and almost too much for the person who committed the violent act. This happens. Read this article that comes dangerously close to making two high school football players who raped a drunk 16 year old girl seem like they were the victim. When it comes to other crimes I don't think I ever see this kind of sympathy for the criminals. "Stuff like that, feminist refuses to see something like that and only blame the man for something. To clarify my point, if a women goes anywhere and gets drunk to the point where she is not coherent or able to defend herself, she is somewhat responsible because she put herself into that position knowing the threat exists." It's stuff like this that makes it seem like men have absolutely no control of themselves. It is the man's fault because they were coherent enough to make a call and they decided to rape someone. Let me put it like this. I get drunk and pass out and my friends who were with me decide to throw me in a river and I drown. Who's are we to blame for my death? I person A decided to murder a drunk person B, who's fault is it that person B is dead? Victim Blaming is one of those things that feminists don't like. I don't like it either and I'm glad that my friend who got almost robbed and who I took a punch for didn't get expelled from school because we had the audacity to spend money and buy a cookie from the vending machine in front of the people who tried to rob us, even though there is a zero-tolerance for fighting at my school.
Urk, honestly i haven't seen, met, or talked to a feminist before. But by what this is saying it seems pretty bad.
