My friend who's taking Environmental Science needs help with punnett squares, and I only remember the 2x2 ones. He needs help with 4x4 ones...

Soooo, anybody know how to do these?

Q1: Male (insert animal here) is represented by AcBc, and mates with female of same traits AcBc. How would the 4x4 punnett square look?

Q2: Male is represented by Accc and mates with female ccBB (is this even possible?) What are the combinations for this?

It works kind of like the FOIL system in algebra, you use the FOIL system to find out the 8 pairs that go on the outside of the square, then you simply do the normal way.
So number one would look something like this...

    ----AB--Ac--cB--cc
    AB -AB--AB--AB--AB
    Ac -AB--Ac--AB--Ac
    cB -AB--AC--cB--cB
    cc -AB--Ac--cB--cc

Number 2 looks something like this:

    ----Ac--Ac--cc--cc
cB -AB--AB--cB--cB <---- See how once you use FOIL to get the top and side, you just do it as you normally would?
    cB -AB--AB--cB--cB
    cB -AB--AB--cB--cB
    cB -AB--AB--cB--cB

Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of traits and the only thing that actually matters is Dominant (A and B in this case) and recessive (c). Dominant will always rule over the recessive, regardless of the trait.

Edit: Just realized I missed the bottom layer of the first one >_<

He needs to show everything. So for taking the recessive traits into account, would the first one look like this?

    -----AB-----Ac----cB-----cc
    AB- AABB--AABc--AcBB--AcBc
    Ac- AABc--AAcc--AcBc--Accc
    cB- AcBB--AcBc--ccBB--ccBc
    cc- AcBc--Accc--ccBc--cccc

My biology book was pretty simplistic and demonstrative of this topic. While I know about them, I must direct you to Google. It's been too long for me to remember the finer details of them. The internet should have a plethora of guides for them, but they're actually not that much harder than 2x2.

I learned about Punnett Squares in my high school Biology (10th grade). They're really not that complex.
