So earlier I was browsing through some of the month+ old threads when my computer started taking a really long time to scroll down. I won't be modest, I have really good internet, and Google Chrome lagging is nearly unheard of on my computer. While trying to find out what was going on, I noticed that a bunch of the .gifs on the page were only displaying around 1/10 of the frames they actually had, meaning that they were slowing each other down. I'm kinda taking a stab here, but I think all the .gif images on my screen were the cause of slowing it down. When I counted it, there were 9 images on my screen at one time, most of them were in sigs. I was wondering if there could be some sort of restriction applied to the number of RAM-eating images you can put into one signature. Perhaps if we had less .gifs I wouldn't have the sudden problems with slowing down. Maybe some other members are having this same problem? I really don't know if it's only me :/
Users currently can have up to 4 images in their sigs. I don't want to block the use of gifs as many users like to have them in sigs, but maybe for those who do have multiple large gifs in their sigs to maybe consider removing one or two. Your own PC may not lag, but not everyone has great computers. Perhaps it might be a good idea to limit 2 images per signature.
Mine does this occasionally.... Every here and there. I wouldn't say it was a giganta-problem, but it is sometimes a bit unsightly.
you have no idea how many websites actually disallow gifs in sigs unless they're in spoiler tags, do you? If you have to choose between gifs in spoiler tags, or no gifs at all, my choice is easily made. Simply reducing the amount of allowed images in a signature won't help much, in my opinion.
Or, you know, you can use the power of IMAGINATION! Spoilering GIFs is kind of silly, as the point of a signature is, amongst other things, to add recognizability. Spoiler tags detract from this. So yes, the choice is easily made. GIFs. The door is that way.
*looks at my sig* Makes no difference to me what happens. Also a lot of forums allow swear words. Can we have those? That would be so fun. We could spoiler tag them too. Keep all the gifs in sigs
Echo, Dan, Rada? Try 4Chan? As for gif issues, I believe there is an option to stop displaying other people's signatures and avatars if your loading times are suffering. www.everypony.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions
Sorry bro, 4chan is crap. I'm only going off what Rarit-E said. If we wanna compare forums shouldn't all things be open.
Ironically I have some of the crappiest internets around.... yet it loads the signature gifs just fine. But gifs posted specifically as a message tend to lag my loading. But never gifs in signatures... which y'know is saying something when the horrible internet that is Harley's work can load gifs in signatures but not in the message body X3 xD
The only time I catch myself annoyed by .gif lag is when I'm trying to type a reply right after Yami. I can type a whole sentence before it decides to show up, and sometimes a lot of what I typed doesn't show up. That scenario only happens every now and then so I'm not worried about it.
Time for a possible solution. Specify the Options! i know that some people want to view sigs, but don't like the gifs or pictures. have an option where you can turn off the gifs or pics, but keep the rest of the sigs. as well, add restricted image sizes to said signatures. it will reduce load times, as well and allow more room for the server. i only seem to have issues with that on wifi or my home wifi. at my school, i get about 100+MB/s and i get zero lag or latency. most likely restricting image sizes will help the most.
