I've heard it said many times by fans that Pinkie seems to be very unstable mentally. Mostly claims of Bipolar and Multiple Personality Disorder, as well as Schizophrenia and Psychosis. To be honest, I can understand it. Even in the first days of my watching MLP, when I had no idea about Cupcakes or the concept of 'Pinkamena Diane Pie', I was thinking "She's too bubbly. I bet she has bodies under her front room". And really, the show has fallen into the internet's lap as far as Pinkie's character is concerned. First, we had this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOVDu7etQlc Pretty innocent, sure. Nothing too overt here. And then we had this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHy3ZhY9VKs Hmm. That's slightly more worrying. Seriously, I got bad vibes when I saw this episode, even before reading cupcakes or seeing what the fandom had done with this scene. Finally, I saw this the other day (Timestamp doesn't seem to work, so skip ahead to 1:35 to see what I mean): Okay, this is getting weird. Seriously, look at that. Two Pinkies, one depressed, one overly happy? It seems like the team are really trying to dish out fan service, especially when you consider what's been happening in the recent episodes (Derpy's voice, possible TwiDash shipping, literal CheeriMac shipping). I don't know. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I'd like to know if anyones been thinking the same thing. Thoughts? One last thing: I realise that this is a touchy issue, so I'd rather keep responses mature and on-topic. I really don't want to see this turn into a debate over the correctness of certain fan-made work, that's not what this about.
The way I think is that Pinkie's background and life as a filly was very boring with the whole rock farm Amish lifestyle she had going on. So when she saw the sonic rainboom that inspired her to feel overly excessive joy, this feeling felt so good that she never wanted it to end. So she's constantly happy and bubbly around everyone and has the general "Don't give a *squee!*" attitude. The only times she has expressed the exact opposite (on the brink of insanity and anger) was when she didn't get her way (her friends turning down her party invite, and Applejack's breaking of a Pinkie Promise). It seems that her love for constant happiness and sugercoated lifestyle has "spoiled" her in a way. She doesn't quite understand how to take "No" for an answer, and as a result has issues controlling negative emotions as they are rarely experienced.
personal opinion on topic: Pinkie Pie is Pinkie Pie, she doesn't need more explanation than that :derpe:
You know, i think that's a pretty good analysis of the situation mike, that's what i was going for too psychoanalytically. Not much more too say, your post mirrors my thoughts. I don't really think she is crazy at all. I think there is some either fan service/over-anlyizing going on.
Yeah, I don't think she's crazy either. I think the fans who made this false image about Pinkie being insane took it too far. She's a happy fun party pony who loves everything and everyone, but dislikes disappointment and negative emotions toward her.
Thanks for the replies, those are all great points. But I was really wondering more of what you thought about those specific examples and the attitudes of the writers and animators... Do you think they're reaching out to the fans? My first thought when I saw Pinkie depressed in the Everfree Forest was 'They're trying to show she has serious ups and downs'. The happy Pinkie confirmed it for me. Like I said, I could be looking at this in entirely the wrong way. What do you guys think?
No, I don't think they are fan servicing. The team comes up with wacky things for Pinkie to do. I think it's more because since Pinkie is so unique, we may think it's directed specifically toward us.
I think you're overspeculating, but then again, that could just be me being overly-sensitive since Pinkie Pie is my favorite pony. Hmm, never actually thought about this, it would actually make sense, but I always just thought she was on cocaine.
I think that this particular example is more over-analysing than fan service. I think it was representing how Pinkie can cheer up anyone, even herself. But there has been quite a bit of fan service going on, not so much for Pinkie but for Derpy Hooves. Considering that Derpy started off as an animation error and is now hidden in almost every episode, this must be fanservice. Also, the Steven Magnet wig. There is a small chance that little girls would recognise it. I'm sure that there are many other examples but I can't think of any off of the top of my head. So they are definately reaching out to us, but not so much with Pinkie (possibly I could be wrong).
I think they're just trying to show a stronger depth of character in terms of her design. She is a fairly powerful character from a storytelling perspective. Even the most positive people have ups and downs like us all. The show is trying to show us things like that. I agree that its probably ponies over-thinking the simple.
I think you're thinking into it a little too much ^^ Seeing connections where there aren't any (not intentionally) anyway. But that's just me, I can at least see why you would think this.. At the end of the day IT IS a children's show.
Alright, I see it's just me. I'm probably thinking too much again. Must stop doing that... :derpe: Thanks for the replies, it was interesting to hear your thoughts.
