I bet this sounds lame, but hear me out:

I have been a brony for half a year now, I have seen every episode (nearly twice), and I constantly visit brony sites. Zealously is not something I lack, but I do lack bravery. My parents are what most would call haters.

Example: “A guy watching that show? That just freaks me out; there is something wrong with your friend!” (Reply to me telling them about one of my brony friends)

So… Any ideas? I don’t want to have to shut off the computer every time a family member walks by anymore. I need some way to explain to my parents what it truly is to be a brony! Please help!

(And no, showing them the show won't work, my REALLY young sister enjoys the show, and they unfortunatley only ever saw the akward "That was the Doozy!" part of Feeling Pinkie Keen.)

There's no reason your parents would or should dislike you or be dissapointed in you for enjoying the show. Tell them about how there are worse things out there, and how it's not like you obsess over it. Tell them the reasons you enjoy it and explain that it's one of your hobbies.

    You could show them S02E03.

Crazy flank, Twilight going crazy. Would tell them that this show obviously was not designed only for girls...

Then again, my parents are indifferent about it. Sister likes Big Mac, Octavia, Lyra.

I don't see why people are taking an approach like this, I mean, it's a kids TV show like any other. There is no reason at-all for any judgment to be made about it. I don't mean to cause offence to anyone at all but it seems to be a little like 'coming out the closet', when infact, it isn't, all you're doing is watching a TV show intended for people younger. For example my mum knows I watch a lot of cartoons, it's the only feasible thing worth watching on morning, she thinks to different to me. Just my view on this matter anyway.

Back to Skyrim, writing this in the in-game browser olololollool. :derpe:

Its not that big of a deal. Its just a TV show, just say you enjoy the show. They may think you're weird but they aren't going to disown you or anything.

    Two things:

One, be sure to spell your thread's title properly next time! XD "How to break it to your family: "I'm a Brony"

Two, I don't think it's really necessary to break it to your family unless you really want to, some things are your business and your business alone in this world.

    My mother said: What's that?
I simply replied: I like my little pony.
My mother said nothing and smiling she went to the kitchen to cook

My sister is the only person who knows that I write fanfiction with this show as the basis. Beyond that, most know I'm a fan and like it.

The show has great values with the whole growing and learning concepts and then the end-of-episode morals. That's a strong point when mentioning it.

    It's should be rather simple.
First off, be sure your parents are in a good mood.
Secondly; start a conversation related to Television.
Finally, throw in ponies and you're done.

This may seem simple, but I had an issue with this very thing. My mother didn't give it a second thought, but my father was extremely upset about it; he saw that my boyfriend bought me Pony toys for my birthday. Despite the fact that I'm male-to-female and always asked for girl toys when I was little, he got very upset with me and said, "that show and those toys are for little girls!" It ended up in a huge fight. Never mind that this show has gained fans from both genders, but he wouldn't understand that even if I told him.

This isn't the only issue my father has with me. Suffice to say I don't say much to him anymore about my life.

well, try talking your sister to watch Lesson Zero while one of your parents is present, or even better, ask your sister (I suppose she's brony too, so you can make brony pact) to ask your mom (or dad) to watch mlp with her. She'll show them Lesson Zero, and you'll just happen to be around, and after episode you can play dumb and say "well, that wasn't so bad, I kinda liked the show.
    and wait for reaction.

I Lol'd. Only real problem with that is that my LITTLE sister is NOT a brony. I'm ok with little girls watching the show, the only problem with my sister is that she makes comments along the lines of "I don't CARE about Fluttershy or derpy whoever! Pinkie Pie is PINK!!!", So she isn't exactly an ally in this. :(
Thank you everypony for all the support! (sorry for the typo in the title) I'm going with GreyOne's plan. Next time I'm alone with my mother (the most likely to accept MLP) I will share the good news! Wish me luck! I will post with what happens.

I just don't tell them. My parents probably wouldn't care anyways. I made my brother a brony, but hopefully he doesn't get me that pony shirt I told him about for Christmas. I'm on thin enough ice with my older sister and her husband as it is. Their jokes are really cruel all the time and they would let me have it for this. I really don't care what they think about me, but if they find out they better hold back their harsh laughter or it's going to me a very awkward and tense Christmas. My brother doesn't seem to believe in discretion because his girlfriend is always there to back him up. Me....I got no one. Everyone I've told so far I have told thoroughly and explained everything within a few hours. I felt like a freak when I found out about this show. I'm one of the one's who discovered it on my own by accident. For those who also found it like that, did you not feel the same way?

If in the situation where you are forced to tell them you like it, or you decide to on your own, you must explain all the reasons why it shouldn't be judged.

When people find out I'M a brony, they immediately resort to judgement.
    But then i defend myself.
List all of the reasons why it's nothing to be judged:

    - The art is fantastic; it has a whole new wonderful style to the new show.
    - It's not cheesy. The only things cheesy about it are the theme song, the title, and the fact that the main character's name is Twilight Sparkle. But other than that, nothing is cheesy.
    - The music is great.
    - The fandom is the most fantastic of all the fandoms.
    - The characters are different from other little kid shows. In most children's shows, each character is defined solely by one, maybe two, characteristics. Everything's dandy all the time. But with these characters, they are relateable and they have full personalities complete with flaws.
    - The plots are unique and creative, as opposed to overused and cliche.
    - The characters speak as if they are talking to other adults, not a kindergarten class.
    - The characters use adult vocabularies (big words not expected to be found in a children's show).
    - The humor is actual funny, not painfully childish.

These are all the reasons i use. There are tons more, but you know... the basics.
They no longer doubt me whenever i tell them these reasons.
