Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I just feel like I need to ask this. See, I'm not very good at expressing myself creatively through most "normal" means, such as drawing, producing music, or writing stories or poetry. I've tried my hand at writing stories several times, but I am unable to get very far in the writing process when writing stories. However, the one thing I'm really passionate about is world-building. I love it. Whenever I work on my worlds it's like I'm discovering and exploring them rather than creating them. I can sit and write tons of material for my worlds, create maps, and study and apply various subjects (physics, biology, astronomy, history, you name it) to enrich them. I can get so lost in the creative process of world-building that I sometimes even forget about or neglect my bodily needs (food, drink, hygiene, sleep). So here's my first problem: I don't know how to present my worlds to other people. How do I make astronomical data, maps, cultures, histories, species analyses, etc. as accessible to people as a story or a piece of music? This is a huge problem as when I try to show my work to others they only see a huge dump of information. This has so far caused only three types of responses: people refusing to read or ignoring my works, people simply saying that my works are 'nice' without even mentioning what they liked or what needs more work and etc., finally some ask me what the purpose of my worlds are, which leads me to... ... my second problem: I have no idea what to do with my worlds. Yes, I've thought about writing stories set in those worlds, but I'm really, really terrible at writing stories. So that leaves me with... nothing. The only reasons I build worlds are because I love it and because it allows me to escape reality and view different ideas from many different perspectives. Though, it still makes me sad as the only thing I'm any good at is creating fictional encyclopedias seemingly unable to entertain, satisfy, or enrich people's lives. So, does anypony have any advice?
I do think you are my new best friend. I can think of lots of uses for worlds but world building is not something I'm good at. You could try and share them with role players and GMs of table top games. That is if you don't mind other people using your worlds. I enjoy being the GM for my gaming group when we play D&D but after a few sessions and my first idea has gone where it was headed my players end up in a empty world wiht nothing to do. I have also tried writing stories but with out in depth worlds the ideas just sorta fall apart.
