Now, just before we get started, this isn't about if Trollestia or Molestia are canon; those are entirely fanon offshoots that are entertaining as variants, but really are not meant to pass as canon. I'm talking about a more canon Celestia: exactly how far can one go with her character? I see her as a rather blank slate, but what interpretations of her character do you see as acceptable or even exceptional, and which cross the line? What about in fanfics or RP? I'd just like to gauge how you all see our Solar Princess, and how you'd be willing to see her portrayed.
I'd be interested in exploring the scope of Celestia's powers. Is she really a goddess or is she just a 'power being' like Q who'd been/is a god to some creatures and is so old and bored with the universe that she's decided to plop down and rub elbows with the mortals? Grounding her in some kind of rule set would be a good start to character work. Likely the first question to answer.
I envision that she is very powerful and lives a long time, but she is not a god. She is more along the lines of the Elves from the Lord of the Rings Series.
Note the plural. I once posed a question relating to this on another forum, and we all agreed to disagree. My question was this: The alicorns are never mentioned in the Hearth's Warming Eve creation myth. It only mentions Earth ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi. That begs the question: How did the Princesses (assuming Celestia and Luna are the only alicorns, of course. I'll believe Cadence when I see her, but I digress) get involved? Were Celestia and Luna derping around Equestria once day and just said to the ponies, "Oh, this kingdom seems nice... YOINK!" But getting back to the topic at hand, I like to believe that Celestia and Luna are indeed physical goddesses, like the Greek pantheon.
I've been thinking. Maybe Alicorns were pretty common, but Discord came along and had some fun that lead to some of them dying off. Celestia and Luna were the last a live, and they used the Elements of Harmony on Discord to defeat him. The ponies saw them beat him, and made them both Princesses because of their look and for beating Discord. Of course, the other reason was that Discord caused a lot of damage to Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasus, and they needed new leaders to run their country.
Maybe. I once read a fic where something like that happened. It was told from Discord's point of view and was very good. I think it was called Discordant...
^This I skimmed some fanfic on EQD a few days ago, that said the creation of harmony between the three races ended up personfiying in Alicorns. A phyiscal union was made with the unicorns and the pegasus, so for the first time all races were competely united (Earth ponies being common ansectors of all). It's just some fanon though it is really agreeable. I honestly think she is a troll on occasion, besides that she is just protrayed as a perfect little girl's princess. SHe does have a lot of patience though, with Luna coming back and Twlight's magic blunders.
Here's my theoretical timeline. 1. Equestria is discovered by ponies. Hearth warming eve 2. Eventually through cross breeding the first alicorns are born 3. soon the alicorns grow in supremacy due to their abilities. 4. the alicorn royalty is formed by taking control of the heavenly bodies. 5. eventually celestia and luna take the throne. they are princesses because they refuse to take the crown as only one of them can.
If I really thought about it I would say both Celestia and Luna are at least the level of Demi-Gods. They are able to single handedly move the Moon and the SUN! The. SUN. Now it was said in the Hearth warming eve story that the unicorns were able to do it but the fact that Celestia is able to do it BY HERSELF, and then take on the duty of of moving the moon, that goes beyond even the strongest magic we've seen so far and passes into the realm of "Uber-Mega-Been eating Miracle Gro" cosmic power.
True, but I never said that Celestia was the more powerful of the two now did I? Wait, I did kind of imply that didn't I, hmm.
