This is probably a suitable topic for the music section, however I feel it is a topic that needs to be discussed in general.

So the question "Is Rock dead?".

Well, is it? I believe it is on the verges of being so.
In the UK, throughout the whole of 2011, can you guess how many songs of the rock genre made it into the Top 10?

...finished guessing? Well, if you guessed any higher than 1, you'd be wrong. That's right, 1 rock song made it into the Top 10, and even that was "The Goo Goo Dolls", which is rock/pop if I recall.
The main point is, rock is dying a slow and painful death in the world of the music industry, and being suffocated by the mainstream. This is sad, as rock is a main inspiration for me, the same as metal is. The lyrics inspire me when I hear the messages embedded within.

Today, most music is about going to the club, meeting some girls, making love, doing drugs and getting wasted.
Repetition, repetition, repetition. I am disgusted by the recent music from the likes of "Kelly Rowland" and "Nicole Schirzinger" (I couldn't care less if I spelled their names wrong).

I recall part of the lyrics from a recent song being:
"I'm down for whatever,
I'm down for whatever.
Baby, with you, I could make love on the floor."

Look at that. Disgusting isn't it? And this is what young girls listen to, and memorise the lyrics to, and then they sing it or have these words floating about their heads about sex and innuendos of the like. These artists are their role models, and It's just not right. This kind of music is widely broadcast around the world and it sickens me when most songs with meaning are shunned.
I don't want to hypocritical, as I do like a tiny quantity of dubstep (Eeyup, pony related - that stuff is awesome), but I'd rather it not have the lyrics like the ones above and just have repeating beats.
I need to stop waffling, I've said my part.

That rant was all over the place, I do apologise. Not much I can do about it all anyway, just sharing an opinion.

So enough about me, I want to hear your opinion on modern music. I'm one for Bon Jovi, Guns 'n' Roses and the like, but that kind of music just isn't the future it seems, which is such a shame. Good bands are hard to come by when digging through the Kerrang Magazine.

The Beatles.

They are a definitive classic rock band, the members of which were role models for millions. What did they inspire? Promiscuity and drug use. The only difference is that their music was good.

As for the death of the genre, I like to disagree here. The music is still very much alive, and if you look a bit deeper than the mainstream pop (note: MAINSTREAM pop), you'll find a whole world of the stuff. More so for metal. The trends have shifted, and just like people complained that Jazz was gone, Classical is gone, now we complain that Rock is gone, when really, all that happened is that now it's not the trend, and so you have to just open your eyes to a greater world of music.

If anything, I like this, since it means that I can choose what artists I like, not what artists can pay more for commercials, and there's very few people jumping on the bandwagon because of popularity. It's these people that I tend to despise, mostly because when a person begins to be a puppet, they begin to lose their humanity.

After all, isn't that the deeper message in all songs? That we must keep our humanity?

See. Most of the music I listen to... I find stumbling around the web on random top ten lists. Also Pitchfork, and the fact that I live in Asheville, NC where all the hippies and hipsters are. I hate the radio and think that most modern music is just trash. The only good station I found is a station around here called the Mountain that plays Led Zeppelin and the like.

As for my favorite bands and suggestions, I love Pink Floyd. Also Modest Mouse. Two of my biggest inspirations and my favorite bands ever. Most of the stuff I listen to is considered hipster music, but a lot of it is good. Some good, newer bands are Yellow Ostrich, The Dead Weather, Broken Social Scene.

Rock is dying in a way, but only in the mainstream, and because we're letting it. The fact that people like Lil Wayne can think they're rock is so stupid it amazes me.

So in my final opinion on this subject, the only true place to find good rock anymore is not in the mainstream because it's all trash.

I Listen to just about anything as long it's not Rap, Heavy/Death Metal and Screamo.

Rock is the one Type of Music that will never died, in my opinion. Today's standard as music goes is Rap after the next and me and rap is just crap and people call that music? Please, i can rhyme too.

When it comes to Rock, i can think of a few titles and the bands that are my favorite are The Beatles, Rush, and One Republic. Just to name a few. I Don't Think Rock is going anywhere anytime soon. Classical music and Jazz comes and goes if you want my opinion.

The Beatles had a song called "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?".

Modern music is mostly mince, a point on which I will agree with you. I think most 80s rock was equally stupid and repetitive (power chords anyone?). The best age for rock was 1960s to early 1970s, with Led Zeppelin being among a few outliers into the later part of the decade. Otherwise, the blues of the era are king. Considering my favorite era of music is the late classical (romantic) period, it is also easy to think of rock music as stupid and baseless, but for me, that's just my fun music.

I don't think rock is dying, just a lot of the older ideas pertaining to it.
I think rock was so popular back in the 60's and 70's mainly because it was new, exciting, and often spoke to the immediate desires of the younger generations. Currently, hip-hop and pop are fulfilling those desires, so for the most part rock isn't topping the charts. There are plenty of rock bands that are currently touring and making albums, they're just not main-stream and are sorted into sub-genres.

I don't think rock will ever truly die, it's too influential for that to happen. I think similar to Jazz, a lot of the original artists will be remembered, and the style will continue to influence new genres and sub-genres.

@Blize- I love the bands you mentioned :D Especially Pink Floyd, Modest Mouse and Broken Social Scene!

"my turn to rant"

I as of the last few years have given up on anything mainstream being any good. It's not that the bands don't have talent, but the lyrics are were they are lacking. As you mentioned above they are all about parties, girl, drugs and cars or whatever, the list is close enough. I don't thing it is the bands fault, they sign to a label and the label tells them to put out this crap. Why, because with the likes of Jersey shore and all that junk on TV. People have become obsessed with "partying" , so writing songs about parties gets you money. Then every label wants songs like that to get money. It's a horrible cycle, it just keeps building on its self. That is why I turned to lesser known bands.( time to be hipster)

Alpha380
Bad Astronaut
Capdown
Citizen Fish
The Force Of Evil
I Hate Kate
Intro5pect
Choking Victim/Leftover Crack
Line-Up
MC Frontalot
No Cash
Iamsleepless.

Thats just a small list. Most are not Rock, but my point stands. Not being well known and being signed to a good label. It lets them write the songs they want. LOC is political, not many mainstream bands will do that. Why? "OH No, one we offended that person, now we won't get money." Thats why. It really just keeps coming back to money. They don't care for any real meaning in their songs. They want something catchy that makes money.

I keeps hearing a lot of hate on rap. Yes, all the mainstream rappers rap about is the same thing over and over. Check out people like

Mc Lars
Mc frontalot
YT Cracker
K.Flay
Schaffer The Darklord.

Those are NerdCore rappers, they rap about a bunch of different things. It can't hurt to try can it?

Back on topic.

Rock might be going the way of Grunge and punk.

mainstream killed what was left of punk. Fallout boy, avril lavigne, Taking back Sunday and Linkin Park are not punk, they are not punk rock and they never will be. They claim to be, latching on to what a once proud music genre built. They don't have the feel, the lyrics, or the message to be punk/punk rock.

If history repeats its self, they 'rock' may die to.

In the words of someone I can't remember

Punk Isn't dead it's just sleeping

or rock in this case :derpe:

I don't think it's dead at all, there's just a lot of untalented musicians or lyricists. People hate Nickelback, and it's understandable, but they do have GREAT songs, for example.

Honestly, I blame Rebecca Black for this. "We don't hate you 'cause you're famous. You're famous 'cause we hate you."

I dont listen to the radio anymore either. I found myself listening to more classical music. Like Beethoven. The music now seems to just depress people more than anything. Well the mainstream ones anyway. Granted i listen to just about everything so if one genre is annoying me ill go to another.

To take in consideration as to what others have said, I did not emphasise "dead in the mainstream". Dohoho how silly of me. I guess I feel some bands/singers should be more acknowledged than they are.
Obviously, I do not know what is playing on the other side of the world, but the thing I was most concerned about, was the messages given to the young, and how labels signing these "talents", which they "Auto tune" anyway, give them these appalling lyrics. *sigh* Yeah, yeah I know, it's for the money, but it is what spawns these thugs and hooligans who are easily influenced by the music industry. It's corrupt. :sigh:

I listened to some metal bands I didn't know were Christian, or rather, of that background. Most bands of that nature don't call themselves as such.

There are plenty of bad songs out there. Like, ICP - Miracles. Great message, but it's written with an elementary grasp on English. It's not particularly imaginative beyond their music video. I like the meaning, but I also don't feel it should be a song from ICP. It doesn't really fit their theme or music, imo. I'm not really a fan of ICP, but I can respect their intent.

Nickelback - Rockstar.........This received so much airplay and is about the stereotypical rock star dream. It's pretty neat, though.
Nickelback - Someday.........My favorite song, though it was not written by Nickelback. It's about regrets and trying to fix your problems and make everything better.

And two more examples:

Just to Get High - Written from the perspective that the singer watches his best friend destroy his life with drugs.
Photograph - A song about memories. It also alludes to the idea that you tend to remember things differently in a better light.

Using one band for examples isn't good, but it's showing that they can write good lyrics. Sometimes I don't listen to lyrics when it comes to music, but I tend to find them very empowering when combined with the track they are for.

Fireflight - Unbreakable.........A Christian band, this song is about overcoming difficulties and obstacles. (Written during their worst struggles.)
The Material - No One Has to Know........Sometimes I'm not entirely sure how this should be interpreted. It's about cheating, and how much you can lose as a result. "The grass isn't always greener" basically.
