What are those gems above my avatar? Are they some sort of ranking system? If so how do I get it to go up?

It's your reputation. Members can add rep to anyone they feel deserves it, using that purple chest on the bottom left of your post. Click "I approve" and write a little message and there ya go! The more rep you have, the more rep you can give to others. Hope this helps! ^_^
Zephyr's got it. When a user writes a particularly interesting, informative, or perhaps just funny post, you can give them reputation. It's good for identifying the helpful contributers, although don't worry if you don't have many, just get posting and give it time!
