Now, I'm sure there's a suggestion box that this belongs in, but I'm finding no such thing so here we go: I was thinking, and I think one way we can make this site more user-friendly and give unique experiences for everyone here is an idea inspired by an add-on to one of my favorite site called Reddit. The add-on is called Reddit Enchancement Suite and there is one part from it I think can be adapted for this site: User Tags. User Tags in RES allow users to 'tag' others with a symbol/phrase whenever they feel so. No others except the tagger sees the tag, which allows them to more easily pick out certain other users. Now I'm sure it would require some changing and adapting for us, but the basic idea is great to me. Let me give you guys an example of how this could work if you implemented it: In the General Chat Thread: User 1 and User 2 are having a 'normal' conversation when this comes up: User 1: So what do you think about this? User 2: Dunno, but I don't like it as much as much as I like cake! User 1: Hahaha, I think I'll tag you as Cake-Lover (possible a cake and a heart pic), is that alright? User 2: Sure, sounds funny. Now it obviously wouldn't be that perfect and certain possible tags should probably be moderated, but I think this is generally a good idea for us common folk in the forums. You could even make this a sort of 'reward' for reaching member/senior member status. Just a suggestion from SnowM.
I don't see why such tags would need to be moderated if only the tagger can see them. Not something i agree with, honestly. I personally don't want to exclude members from something based on their post count. As for the idea itself, it doesn't sound bad, but i have no strong feelings one way or the other. (sorry, couldn't resist adding that pic XD)
Also, expanding on this idea, the user should also be able to make a public/private tag on themselves. And that the tags should either go in their own place in the info place, or next to the name or title of the person being tagged.
You mean so I could type @SnowM in one of my posts and you'd get a notification about it? There's actually already stuff like that for Vbulletin, it wouldn't be impossible to implement.
So essentially like flair on Reddit? I'm assuming this is where you got the idea, feel free to correct my thoughts.
Well it didn't specifically say it was flair, which you've just confirmed for me. Personally, I don't exactly like the idea because too many add-ons can bog down the site, or so I'm told, but it's not just up to me, it's up to the others as well so let's see what they say on the matter.
I've seen this on news aggregate sites I've visited. I think he means just a little description that appears next to the user's name, as he said, that only you can see. It is used there to remind yourself about people and how they post. For examples: (user 1) - Likes to troll (user 2) - Knows about science (user 3) - Completely insane (user 4) - Spouts nonsensical garbage I don't know how useful it would be here though. We all have avatars and are much easier to identify here.
No, it's more of a comical thing I guess. I don't know, it was a better idea in my head than on here.
A lot of ideas are my friend, we all get them. I think the idea has some merit, it would certainly help some people. I think it'd be worth discussion at the very least. ^^
It's surely worth to think about it. Makes me think about the badges in deviantart. Seen on our profile, giving 'merit', explaining a bit our personality. I say, worth to think about. May be great on this site. Some of those tags may be about our fav characters from the show?
Eh, I'm not crazy about this idea. Only the person giving another member a tag can see that tag is my understanding from what I've read. I just don't really see the benefit of implementing this.
So every single user can rename every other user their own nickname? 3000 x 3000 members worth of potential name fields? I'd pass...
