    Hey there, everypony!

    It's ePONY here with an... art thread? o_O

    What is this madness?!

    Actually, I don't know if calling it "art" or an "art thread" would even be appropriate... yet. Heh.

    I figured I'd try to pick up a new hobby of drawing ponies for fun. Just to give you an idea of my lack of experience here, this is the second time I've ever drawn a pony— ever! I wasn't pleased with my first one enough to actually post it.

    Here is a hand hoof-drawn sketch of my OC, ePONYmous:

    View attachment 3172

    And here is what he looks like after I colored him in Gimp:

    View attachment 3171

    So... what do you think?

    I'd love honest constructive feedback! Please tell me anything you find good and/or bad about it. I'd love to know what things I need to improve on and things that are already good (if there's something that's good. I hope there is. ^^;).

    Thank you in advance!

    Well, I like it! But then again, I like nearly anything arty.

    As for critique, I am not one to judge, as I couldn't do any better, but perhaps make the front legs bent a bit, showing the joints in the leg as well as making the hoofs seem more flat on the ground?
    Others would be able to critique better than I.
    Very good nonetheless :smile:

    Impressive.

    Feedback time.

    The belly seems a little big, ponies have like a pear shape thing going on.

    the front legs seem a bit stiff. They have a slight curve.

    The eyes are darn good.

    The lines are nice and smooth.

    Was it done by mouse or tablet?

    Well that's all I got. You've seen my art, so I could be entirely wrong with all the above. I still struggle with pony anatomy.

    Wow! Feedback already! Thank you so very much, Xaniith and Pixel! I really, really appreciate it! ^^

    @Pixel, I did it by mouse.

    This.

    Drawing with mouse that good shows that you are persevering and dedicated.
    Either that or a lack of money :3

    No, I'm afraid I'm not really that good. Yes, I use a mouse, but let me explain. I use the paths tool for a lot of the lines to make sure it looks smooth.

    [IMG]

    I'm not drawing over the lines by holding the mouse down, if that's what you were thinking. That'd be quite the disaster. XD

    So let me fix what you said;

    - Impressive
    - Fantastic
    - Good with a paths tool.

    There we go! :p

    I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding. I thought when you said "mouse," you meant that I used a mouse, but not to actually draw it by holding the mouse button down and to trace over my drawing. My mistake. I'm an idiot when it comes to these things. You'll have to forgive me for that one. lol ^^;

    I stand but what I said. When I started I used the SAI line tool. You can see it in the first picture of Platinum I made. My Luna picture was my first time I took them off.

    If you made it straight from the path tool, you still drew it. If you did it with paper first, you still drew it.

    Hmm.
    That's a great result for a second attempt.
    With a little practice and some dedication,
    You could prolly produce some amazing pieces.

    For some constructive criticism:
    The lines are really well done; smooth and continuous.
    The placement of tail and cutie mark you nailed;
    Took me a couple of tries to get right myself.
    The shape is a tad bit off near the belly;
    For whatever reason, ponies bear resemblance to lightbulbs.
    The front legs are a little rigid looking,
    Adding a little bend would do them justice.
    Another little matter is perspective:
    The legs further away shouldn't come down to the same
    Level as those closer. They should stop a little above.
    The hind legs were done expertly however, you've the shape in the bag.
    The mane and tail were done quite well too actually.

    All in all: Kudos.
    With time and practice you could be doing some amazing stuff.

    I had a thought about the front hooves, and that is : think of how a stickman's ankle area would look
    [IMG]
    Rather similar no? the leg of the front hoof bends in the same direction, the tricky part is getting that rounded shape at the end, where the "tip" continues to extend away and back around, and the "heel" curves under, getting the balance right is difficult. And be sure to curve the bottom of the hoof downwards, you did it with the back hooves!

    The mane works really well, in fact...there's only minor improvements to make around the picture but they've all been covered above.

    CONFOUND THOSE FORELEGS! T_T

    Hehe. Yeah, it's funny how a couple of the suggestions are matching some of my thoughts as well— especially the ones about the belly (you may even see the faint erasure marks in the original sketch), the forelegs and forehooves.

    Thank you greyOne and Bounty! I really appreciate your input!

    I'll make sure to take all of these points into consideration the next time I put a pencil to paper to draw my next pony. ^^

    Right, let me see here...
    Ok, first I must put into consideration that it is only your second time drawing ponies, and trust me, pony anatomy is hard to nail.
    Hard to nail I say, well you pulled off quite a few of the main details!

    The tail, mane and cutie mark look great, and are positioned well. The next good point are the hind legs. With some practice, those can be improved, but that isn't a massive concern. The eyes aren't a problem at all, keep those eyes a'coming!
    The horn needs to be a bit straighter in my personal preference... but that's just me. :p

    Now, I think everyone's mentioned those forelegs, so I'm just going to agree and leave it at that. Don't worry, it's all in the practice, but I shall second the information Bounty provided. The perspective needs some work, remembering that the pony is 3D is paramount to make the piece more effective (one hoof on the far foreleg should be slightly above and behind the other etc.).

    Anything else? No, I think that's it.
    I love criticism, but I'm not sure about how deep you like yours to go, so I'm sorry if I'm being too picky. ^^;
    Usually for me, the more points raised, to more I can improve on.
    Overall, well done! I look forward to seeing more art from you in the future and I'll be very happy to help you with any techniques or problems that you may come across. :)

    Looking very good indeed, not bad at all for a first attempt! Pretty much everything has already been covered here, but I thought this might be useful:

    [IMG]

    This guide was invaluable when I first started drawing ponies, as it really showed the shapes that come together to form pony anatomy. Lots of other great guides and tricks here, all were really useful to me when I first started drawing.

    Thank you very much, Merriweather! I appreciate it! It seems the general consensus is that I did a pretty good job with the eyes, hindlegs, mane, tail and cutie mark (position).

    Also, thank you for mentioning the horn. It's quite alright! I appreciate any kind of comments and critiques. The more points brought up, the better! So feel free to go as deep as you want.

    >_>

    Um... with critiquing that is. As long as nopony says, "ePONY, you suck! You shouldn't have even tried this! Kill it with fire!" then I think I'm okay. :)

    inb4 somepony posts that for the lulz.

    I'll be sure to work on the perspective, forelegs and the body shape the most in my next attempt.

    Also, thank you so much for that drawing guide, Ronsta! I'll be sure to use that next time as well! ^^

    You all have been a great help! :D

    A decent start ePONYmous :)
    Its just a matter of practice.
    Be sure to keep this one around. That way you can see how you have improved. At least thats how I do it.
    Drawing these ponies does take some work thats for sure.
