So like i said a few weeks earlier i said i might try writing a fanfic. I started out good, then gave up for a while, and now again, i spent the last few hours writing the first chapter. The first chapter is pretty much done, but i keep thinking it's not good enough, like it's missing alot. I always feel like i keep rushing through a chapter to get it done. Too much dialogue and not enough descriptions. Problem is i wouldn't know how to write less rushed because then i feel i'm making it drag on too much... Note: This chapter is about 1750 words long. Just to give an idea. That's why i'd like you to give this chapter a quick read before i decide to continue writing. Of course you don't have to read it if the story doesn't interest you, so i'll give you a "short" description. Spoiler: Wall of text Twilight is bothered by nightmares she's been having about the previous enemies she faced (Nightmare Moon and Discord), but part of the dreams feel like visions of the future rather than memories of the past. She asks Celestia for help on the matter and she sends a book to Twilight which contains information on a pretty complex time travel spell. The subject of the book puzzles Twilight, but she trusts her teacher and tries to use the spell with the help of her friends, hoping it would somehow reveal how it can make her nightmares dissapear. I know what you're all thinking: "a time travel fic? It NEEDS Dr Whooves!!" He serves as the prologue part of the story, and he'll likely also serve as the closure point in the last chapter (sorry for the spoiler ) Still if it's a better idea to just leave him out, it won't be a problem to remove him. You can read it HERE (if the screen is too big, there's a zoom out button in the top right corner) And yes, i know the title of the story is probably too goofy or punny for a somewhat serious story. I'll probably still change it when i find something better. Your initial comments will mean alot to me, and they'll probably decide the future of this fic. If it's not any good as it is now, i probably won't continue. That's why i've added a "black or white" poll. I like writing, it's a way to cure boredom. That said, i'd like a good reason to keep writing, so if not many people like it, i don't really see the point to continue. Most importantly, i just want an honest feedback from you all.
All I can say is keep at it, I'm creating chapter two for my fanfic Avengers of the Lost while writing it yet somehow it is working...odd that normally doesn't happen.
So there isn't really much you'd change about my writing? I also usually know how to make my next chapters work if the first one started off properly, but yeah, i wrote down my worries and doubts about Ch1 in the OP.
Truly it is up to you weather you want to change it or not, I could not view the work though but do not judge me on that. Tell me how long you have been working on this piece including revising on your own and I will tell you what I might think of it.
Well, i've had the basic idea for the story in my head for a while now, so that helps a little bit. If you mean how long i worked on this particular chapter, about 4 hours give or take.
Thats a considerable amount of time, it may need a few tweaks here and there, but again I can not see it for some odd reason *stares at computer menacingly* if you can send it to me on the forums I recall I have a help thread set up in the fanfic forum under under developmental Diaries you should be able to post it there if that helps any.
The Google Docs link is... well, it doesn't work. But the story sounds like an intresting concept. I say, go for it!
Don't be discouraged by critique. Use it as a method to improve or learn. Somehow, this fandom got me inspired to actually write at all and has rekindled my interest in creative writing. Ironically, I never cared for reading or writing in school, always rushing through assignments like prompts or stories. Whether you rush yourself to write something or not, it won't change the fact that you should go back over it. See where you can improve telling the story or capturing the scene. Even expand upon it. My chapters aim for 4500-5000 words (with one peaking around 5800-5900), but length only matters to the author, really. I usually set a scene or amount of progress to the story I want for each chapter. All of my chapters originally met the goal of 3000 words for EQD's minimum submission. All were 3000-3600, but now every chapter is over 4500, with the first 4-5 being 5k+. I'm fairly satisfied with most of them now, though the prologue has had the most editing done to it. Last bit of advice I'll give you is: Write for yourself, first and foremost. That's what fanfiction is. You, the fan, writing your own story for the fandom. I have submitted some of my chapters to Ponychan for review and EQD a few times. Each time it was declined from EQD, the critique for it was fairly barebones or unexpected. After the last time, I resolved to finish my story before doing any major rewrite that would lose elements that I wanted in the story.
@Aynine- I never liked writing much either in High school until I got out and started doing some freelance writing of my own, it is a lot more fun when you do not have to write to a prompt currently have a 33 page monster that I call a short story need to get back on that one, but my fanfic is taking over now yet I do not really care because its fun and thats what counts.
