I think I've finally figured out why none of the Spike episodes have ever wowed me: 3 out of 4 of them put too much emphasis on portraying him as a spoiled brat. Owl's Well that Ends Well: He gets extremely jealous and assumes he's going to be replaced just because Twilight gets a second assistant. Even though Twilight never actually says she plans to replace Spike, he still goes out of his way to get Owlowicious (I don't know how it's spelled) kicked out. Secret of my Excess: He solicits birthday presents and ends up going on a theft spree all over town. Just for Sidekicks: He neglects the well-being of the pets he's supposed to be watching just so he can be able to make a cake for himself. Seriously, it's like they're trying to make him look worse with every episode he stars in. Every Spike episode makes me like him a little less.
Well, he is a kid, and kids tend to display those kind of negative personality traits. Still, I agree with you... that may be why his episodes tend to be less enjoyable...
Yes... baby dragons will do things like that. Dragon Quest is probably the only really good Spike episode. :derpe:
am I the only one here that actually likes Spike episodes? idk, I find them funny. Spike has specific personality, but hey, doesn't everypony have one?
He's a Dragon, as Zecora said in Secret of My Excess, Dragons are prone to greed. So yeah..also I think your over exxagerating abit, in all instances his "spoiled bratness" were justified. Owls well that ends well he feared Owlicious would replace him, Secret Of My excess, the moral of the episode was greed, so yeah.... Just for sidekicks, he was hungry for gem cake. He's a dragon, its in his nature. Despite all that though he's still more kind hearted then the rest of his kind.
I want you to read over what you just typed. Now....does that ring any bells? Maybe...you in your early stages of life? Or anyone else for that matter? Come on. Thats the point of those episodes. Spikes a freakin kid.
Yes, he is a kid, and a dragon, it doesn't make the behavior any more appealing to people who aren't kids, or dragons.
I don't think that matters. It's behavior portrayed by a child, that of which spike is. That's the same thing as saying "Oh he breathes fire i hate that stuff" and the logical person's retort: "But he's a dragon..." bumbling persons lethargic reply: "Oh yeah but thats not appealing to me or my friends."....-_- xD
Right, some people don't like dragon characters, which is a totally legitimate reason to not like Spike. Oddly enough. (Just as not being a fan of vampires is an acceptable reason to not watch Dracula movies.) Don't get me wrong, they did a really good job of portraying him as a greedy dragon child who tries to be honorable as he can. I'm just saying it's not as appealing a personality to watch as a shy cutie who has trouble speaking up unless the situation is quite dire.
Yes but originally the post was saying "put too much emphasis on portraying him as a spoiled brat." there's no emphasis in the show about that...Spikes also not a spoiled brat he's just a kid who portrays characteristics of a child. Nothing wrong with that and i don't believe that to be a determining factor in whether you like him or the episode or not. It's like...i see this post as attempting to chastise and criticize a child for tiny and trivial mistakes he makes because he doesn't know any better.
Okay, I can't argue with that there. Because I don't see him as a spoiled brat. I like the way they portray him, I just don't as much enjoy episodes centered around him. I most enjoy episodes that have a harmonized balance between the mane 6 and Spike.
I like the Spike episodes, but I usually like it more if the episodes are centered around Mane 6 AND Spike.
I've never seen a child act in such ways... And nor did I. :c Das crazy. Also Spike episodes need more ponies.
true that. It kinda reminds me how sometimes very stupid ideas (like one with fake dead mouse in Owel that ends well) seem like great ideas when you're a kid. Even dough he's a kid and knows to act up sometimes, no one is perfect, and I think he's likable kid. Actually, kind of kid I'd like to have one day in future.
Personally, I find Spike episodes to be really good in their own right. As it has been mentioned before, Spike's immaturity is a very well-written part of his character and never ceases to amuse. However, I really wish we had more episodes focused on the interaction between him and the Mane 6.
The thing I don't really like about Spike is that they've taken to portraying him as utterly inept. He's Twilight's number 1 assistant (a gratuitous title but still) and now he can't handle a mop without making a huge mess of things? Idk, Spike doesn't really annoy me or anything, it's just 1) he's not a pony and 2) for whatever reason, his episodes are pretty boring. Just for Sidekicks had a lot of d'aww in it, so that's the only Spike episode I liked, and that really didn't have much to do with Spike.
