I have wondered if Pony names in MLP:FiM are not actually real names, but nicknames. It seems kind of odd, for instance, that Granny Smith's name would be such before being an old pony (yes, I get the apple reference, but still); or that Fluttershy is pegasus that is shy; or that Vinyl Scratch is a DJ; or that a host of other ponies are simply named after what their cutie mark represents, which seems a bit backwards. There is even an instance where Rainbow Dash says "they don't call me 'Rainbow' and 'Dash' for nothing!", implying that it was an earned nickname. Pinkie Pie is an interesting case in that she actually has a proper name, Pinkamena Diane Pie, but goes by Pinkie Pie. That seems more proper. What do you guys think? It is kind of an odd naming convention.
I've always been of the opinion that at least most of the time a Pony changes their name when they get their cutie mark, sort of like an initiation rite. I figure that every pony had a simpler, possibly less (or differently) descriptive name upon birth, and some may even go nameless until they earn their cutie mark. It's my personal theory, anyway, and I nod to it in my OC bio. Sungazer, ICly, was named Cloudy when he was born.
If we were to try and attach logic to the situation, then yeah, it would probably be a name change or nickname. Which reminds me, MY PONY STILL NEEDS A NAME. Confound these ponies, using the English language...
Their Cutie Mark appears when they're born, parents name them after it or at least give them a name that gives the slightest hint, and then the cutie mark fades away. Or,that's the theory I've seen and think makes the most sense.
Yeah, there's a few ponies who completely disprove the theory, or in the case of all three of the CMC, probably will once they get their cutie marks (assuming it ever happens on-screen).
maybe, they're named after what their parents think their cutie marks will be, Rainbow dash has a rainbow mane, and the Apple family always have apple in their name except for red delicious and golden delicious
It seems like it could be common for ponies to have an addition to their name based on their cutie mark and/or talent. This kinda implies that Rainbow Dash's original name was "Rainbow" though. Applejack is probably just the family continuing tradition, Fluttershy is probably a coincidence to her behavior, and Rarity could either be a coincidence, or her behavior and interests come from how she was raised and influenced by her parents. Twilight could have had "Sparkle" added on due to her cutie mark, which does the sparkly thing. And we already know Pinkie Pie is just a shortening of her name. ... Am I reading too much into this? (By the way, Silver, I swear that I can see Pinkie's flank jiggling in your signature ._.)
(lol yea, it means someone will post here) maybe the ponies were nameless even after the were born, then their parents named them after their personality/likes/looks/etc i'm just sayin'
Hmmm, I guess that means parents get lucky a lot. Some might be better at guessing cutie marks than others. Like Frost said on page one, maybe it's instinctual? So before that, they were "Hey, you!"?
