Sonya yawned and stretched her arms as she walked out of the academy. The food was very filling and walking around the campus made her very tired. "Well, Venin, the school provided us with an apartment in the city. Want to head over there and get some sleep?"
"Yes, I suppose some sleep is in order... I need my beauty sleep, after all." Venin replied, followed by a yawn.
Sonya opened the door to the apartment. It was pretty standard, 1 bedroom, 2 beds, a bathroom, living room and kitchen. "It feels kind of empty. Hey, Venin, you seem like the kind of guy who has a knack for interior decorating, how about we get some paintings or something to spruce up the room over the weekend?"
Venin put his hand on his chin and sighed. "Purple. It needs purple. And of course, mirrors. Of course, I already brought a few, but only my hand and desk mirrors..." he eventually said. "Oh, and a sofa or two in the living room. What do you think? It needs... something."
"I'll sleep on it. I'll tell you if anything comes to mind over breakfast. Night!" She put on her pajamas, and switched off the lights, falling to sleep almost immediately. -The Next Morning- Sonya woke up, and noticed Venin was still fast asleep. She nudged him a little until she saw his eyes flicker open a little. "If we want to get to school on time, we should eat breakfast soon." She walked into the kitchen and poured some cereal and a glass of orange juice. She looked around the fridge. "Darn, no bacon." She sighed and sat back down, and watched some television while eating her breakfast.
Venin mumbled something in French, and slid from his bed. He eventually sleepily stumbled his way to the kitchen, opened the fridge and grabbed a large container of orange yoghurt, some bread, and a spoon. "What's on TV out here? Is it all boring nonsense like news?" he asked, before eating a massive spoonful.
"Eh. Why not?" he mumbled, and sat down next to Sonya. "Say, do you think that Lord Death is actually a skeleton? It's gotta be a costume or armor, right?"
"He could be a ghost! I mean, he kind of floats around." Sonya took a sip of orange juice. "Hello new students! Today, your instructors will tell you the basics of combat with your partner, among other useful skills." Death went off on a tangent, and Sonya kind of spaced out, thinking of all the adventures she'd share with Venin. Maybe they'd find the soul of a pirate, and follow it to the Bermuda Triangle, to an island full of gold and chocolate waterfalls. Maybe they'd be chosen to hunt down a dangerous serial killer. Maybe they'd find Excalibur! Sonya was hoping for that last one, as she asked her brother about the legendary blade, and he simply dodged the question.
Venin soon followed into La-La Land, though he was day-dreaming about himself and fashion. His head wasn't empty, but it wasn't quite filled with the right stuff. After a while, he eventually drifted into reality. "Hey, Sonya. What time is it?" he asked, rubbing his eyes.
"Uhhh..." She looked at the digital clock on the microwave. "OH CRAP! HOMEROOM STARTS IN TEN MINUTES!" She devoured the rest of her breakfast, and put on her running shoes. She waited impatiently for Venin, ready to break into a sprint.
Venin sprinted into his room, and rummaged through his drawers for clothes. He soon emerged wearing a half-tucked in t-shirt and a pair of of athletic shorts. "Ahhh! Move, move, move!" he screamed, running to the door.
Narrow Sonya made a run for the distant DWMA. The hot desert sun laughed at them as they rushed for the school. It got closer and closer, and they burst through the doors a minute before Homeroom started. Sonya desperately tried to recall where Dr. Stein's class was, but to no avail. She started opening every door until she saw their teacher. She looked frantically at the clock. "Ten seconds!" She barely heard Stein's voice calling role. She burst through the door and took her seat, dragging Venin by the arm. "Sonya?" "He-he-re." She said, panting heavily. "You just barely made it. Don't sleep in next time." "Y-yes sir." "Venin?" Asked Stein.
Venin weakly raised his arm and managed to gasp "Here." in between gasping for air. He then placed his head on the desk and continued panting. "Sonya, if I die... Bu-Bu-Bury me... With my wea-weapon..." he mumbled, exhausted out of his own mind.
"Venin... I'm your weapon." "Sonya, if you're done with Venin's shenanigans, class is ready to start." "Yes, sir. Sorry sir." Stein turned around, and drew a crude drawing of a meister and weapon on the white board. "Excuse my lack of artistic talent. Let's just start with the basics and see who needs help. Weapons, change forms. Meisters, see if you can pick up your weapon." There were many flashes of light in the room, as the Weapons transformed. Sonya followed suit, changing into a bow in a flash of purple light.
Venin picked up Sonya, and began to investigate her weapon form. "You are in dire need of a polishing, Sonya! I need a beautiful weapon to go with myself!" he cried. "Err... Not that you aren't pretty already."
Sonya's chuckle echoed in Venin's head. "It's fine. I have some wood polish back in the apartment, if you'd like to use that." "Okay, it seems all of you have the hang of that! I'll assume if you can do that, telepathy between the two of you will come naturally. Give me a head nod if that's correct." The entire class nodded their heads. "Good! I got that day one stuff out of the way in..." He looked down at his watch. "Four minutes! Let's move on to something a little more advanced." He beckoned the class to get up and follow him to what seemed to be a range full of dummies for testing skills with different weapons. "Venin, I'd like you and Sonya to come here and try and hit that straw dummy over there in the head." As Venin walked up to the range to shoot from, Stein noticed Sonya's weapon form. "Ah, Sonya. Very nice bow, as expected from your family." He then whispered in Venin's ear. "Bows can be a bit tricky to use for the first few weeks, or even months of partnership. The drawstring can be extremely hard to pull back sometimes, and that is completely determined by the weapon's bond with their Meister, so don't beat yourself up if you can't do it." Sonya spoke to Venin again. "Just hit the target on the head, right? Not too hard! Let's go!"
Venin took aim with Sonya, before attempting to pull back the drawstring, only for the drawstring to be stiffer than steel. He soon tried again, applying more effort. Again, almost nothing. He groaned in frustration, and took aim once more. This time, he managed to pull the string all the way back, but began to roar with pain, as his hands burned. "AAARGH! HOT!" he cried, releasing the string, and firing an arrow directly into the dummy's head, piercing it. Venin immediately dropped Sonya, and began to shake his hands, murmuring in pain.
Sonya transitioned out of her weapon form, and ran to Venin to look at his hand. "Oh crap, are you alright?" She looked at his hand, which was still radiating heat. "Did I do that? I'm so sorry!"
"Ah, I should be fine. I heard a story weapons burning meisters once. It happens when souls aren't connected enough." he said. "That's just what I heard, though."
