Hey there, welcome to the forums! If you want to chat with the other members, then there's a chat thread that stays pretty active most of the time. It's a great place to get to know everyone. You could also get involved in the forum games, and there are a host of other topics to getstuck into. Don't forget the radio where there are always a few of us hanging around. hi, welcome. i'm new to the herd also and just came out of the stable about 14 hours ago. I was pony-curious for a few weeks and have like 10 brony friends. They never really pushed it on me and just told me to watch a few episodes. One told me after I had watched 3 episodes that if I watch a 4th one that I would be hooked. He was right. I like it here already, very nice people.
Tips to help you stay? Well, theres the everypony radio which plays the best of pony music content (well, all of it we can get our hooves on actually), you can also create a thread in the Visual art area if you wish to make a continuous stream of drawings, or perhaps create a post for your very own fanfic in that area instead. Your profile can be customised to include your OC, a Cutiemark and even Skype information so we can Stalk to you outside of the forums in a quicker-response.
I used those, they're a good place to start from. There are more scattered around the internet, but the ones in that post are probably enough to get you started drawing ponies.
