A sudden realization hit me as I spent a pony-less Saturday. I read through S2E26p.1 description "of Princess Cadence, PRINCESS CELESTIA'S NIECE." Celestia has one sister, who is Luna, which means... ---LUNA IS BEST MOTHER---
I don't know, after doing a little bit of research, there is nothing that inherently says that Celestia only has one sister and if Luna was a mother that would be expressed in the show or something. Just saying
Ok, its a wild and more than likely wrong accusation, but I gotta do something while I wait for S3, no?
Being on the moon for 1000 years. I doubt Luna is Cadance's mother, considering how young she is/looks.
as Laurent Faust explained for Blueblood, Cadance could be Celestia's distance niece. Maybe somewhere closer in relation with Blueblood. Why not Luna mom: Cadance seems to be little bit older than Twilight, and about same age as Shining Armor. Luna was on moon at the time both Twilight and Shining Armor (or their parents as mater of fact). If Luna was mom then she either: wasn't alone on the moon and Candance found way to magically get back to Earth, or Luna was visiting Earth from time to time. Either of scenarios is unlikely. Meaning of word nice doesn't need to mean children of your sibling, but can be children of your cousins. So that would be my explanation. Same as for Prince Blueblood.
Cadance was originally to be a unicorn, so I doubt she bears any semblance of a back story like the real princesses. FYI: Blueblood is Celestia's nephew. Neither of them appear to have any tie to Luna. I don't think they ever really planned to have a concrete bio for either princess beyond the majestic lore of Equestria's history (EG: no personal stuff, save for plot devices).
Obviously Cadence isn't Luna's daughter seeing as how Luna was on the moon when Twilight was a filly and being cared for by Cadence. I'm assuming that she's a distant niece like how Blueblood was, yet close enough to inherit the Alicorn gene. However, this also raises an interesting thought: What if she's just as distant on the family tree as Blueblood and the Alicorn gene is only apparent in females, though I'm not excellent with biology but I doubt that's the case seeing as how Females have two X chromosomes, and Males have an X and a Y chromosome. I don't know much else after that. However, this topic is just perfect for character discussion. So let's move this there. ~Thread moved to Character Discussion~
I just accept that Pony Geneology makes no sense and is completely random. As much as I would love to attempt rationalization, it's like trying to explain why a die landed on six. Anyhow, something that occurred to me a while ago, but I never really said anything, was that Twilight Sparkle is now related to the Princesses. (Yes, kind of obvious, I know, but I felt the need to mention it.) That's just interesting to me.
Ooh Biology. I think we can all agree that an Alicorn is the combination of the phenotypes (physical characteristics) horns and wings, and not a separate sub-species. Let's assume that Earth Ponies are dominant and that horns and wings are recessive traits. Now lets create some common abbreviations we can work with. HH and WW for Homozygous Dominant Earth Ponies (basic Earth ponies). Hh and Ww for Heterozygous (Earth ponies with horns or wings as recessive genes). And lastly hh and ww for Homozygous Recessive (which will give a Unicorn and Pegasus pony). If you create a punnet square with a Homozygous Dominant Earth Pony and Homozygous Recessive Unicorn: Result: All foals born will be Heterozygous Earth Ponies .....H.....H h...Hh...Hh h...Hh...Hh - If a Homozygous Recessive Pegasus were used instead, the inside of the square would look like Hw Hw Hw Hw, which is still Heterozygous Earth Ponies - Now take that Heterozygous Earth Pony, and make another Punnet Square: Result: 25% chance of a Unicorn foal. .....H.....h H...Hh...Hh h...Hh...hh ______________________________________________________ Now a little more complicated, let's do a Dihybrid Cross, with a Pegasus Hhww and Unicorn hhWw Use "FOIL" for each one: Hw Hw hw hw and hW hw hW hw Place them along the Punnet Square and cross: Result: 4:4:4:4 ratio of Earth, Unicorn, Pegasus, and Alicorn ponies. 25% chance for Alicorn may seem odd, but keep in mind this is a very specific case. ........Hw........Hw........hw.......hw hW...HhWw...HhWw...hhWw...hhWw hw...Hhww...Hhww...hhww....hhww hW...HhWw...HhWw...hhWw...hhWw hw...Hhww...Hhww...hhww...hhww What does all of this crap mean? A) Alicorns could not exist genetically before the 3 tribes of ponies co-existed together. B) Alicorns are not required to mate to create other Alicorn ponies (increasing support for A), although the chance is significantly lower. Question posed: If Alicorns are just the mashup of Pegasus and Unicorn phenotypes, what gives them enhanced magical abilities? I'm basing this off 10th grade biology. Don't take this too seriously.
They aren't actually any stronger than any normal pegasus/unicorn. The only reason Luna and Celestia are the strongest of all of them is because they are thousands of years old, therefore have had more time to learn and increase their strength. A LOT more time.
But how are Luna and Celestia thousands of years old? Do alicorns have the fortune of being immortal? Or is it because they're so magically powerful?
Alicorns seem to age normally cause Cadence was so much younger in twilights flashbacks. perhaps Luna and Celestia are gifted with some devine power. Maybe even they have discoverd special magic to prolong thier lives. Like in the skyrim series most races of elf only have slightly longer lifespans then humans but the magically gifted ones live for centuries.
