... a bit more obnoxious? In season 1, Pinkie Pie was a party-happy, random pony, but she was also smart, tactful, and knowledgeable about things that the other ponies were not (even if she didn't always articulate herself clearly). It was an other-than-obvious intellect. In season 2, Pinkie Pie just seems more narrow and one-dimensional about her own enjoyment, whether it be about gulping down chocolate rain or giving Luna a hard time (if she did know better about the situation, she was being obnoxious to Luna, if she didn't know better about the situation, then her explanation doesn't make sense and she was just being goofy with the younger ponies in spite of Twilight's plea for rational behavior). What do you guys think? I hope Pinkie Pie has more opportunities to show her wiser side.
I hope that too, but whatever, episodes so far aren't too favorable for Pinkie, on return of harmony, besides her discorded self, was quite much obsessed with the chocolate, but she was capable to "snap off it" and help to defeat Discord. on Lesson zero, she was almost a background pony 'cause story was about Twi. On "Eclipsed Luna" she made one of her (for me) best appearances, anyways, NMN is a party and so she acted, Pinkie still seems capable to be less silly when serious things happen or her acting could hurt somepony
None of the episodes so far have really focused on her, but she seems in-character to me. "Luna Eclipsed" at least gave her a bigger role--in fact I'd say she was most in-character in that episode, being incredibly goofy. She loves to pull pranks, and usually the prank victims at least get a little laugh out of it since they're usually not mean-spirited. I honestly don't think she realized how she and the fillies were acting was hurting Luna, and if she had, well, we know she won't prank someone who is too sensitive--such as Fluttershy. I'm betting Pinkie only knows that because either 1) she knows Fluttershy pretty well and/or 2) from experience (and by that I mean she once pranked Fluttershy and learned the hard way it was a horrible thing to do). Now one could argue that it should have been common sense to not mess with Luna the way they did, but...well, Pinkie Pie and common sense? Yeah, right. And Pipsqueak and the fillies probably didn't know any better. On a slightly off-topic note, I'm hoping for a Pinkie-centric episode in the near-future.
I noticed it as well. It's one of several differences I'm picking up on betweeen season 1 and 2. As funny as Pinkie Pie as a chicken was, I have to say I prefer her character from season 1. Don't get me wrong, it's always funny to see Pinkie Pie doing her own thing in blissful ignorance, but she does seem to have not so much a more immature attitude, but a slightly more self centred one. I'm waiting to see how the rest of the season pans out first, but it's still pretty evident.
I don't think there's been enough Pinkie Pie in season 2 to judge. Pinkie Pie is my favorite pony and she's displayed all of the randomness that I love. Chocolate rain is one of my favorite scene in season 2 so far. A few of the other ponies haven't gotten a chance to develop more this season either. Rarity hasn't made too much of an appearance yet, either. Basically, I'm sure Pinkie Pie's character will develop more as the season continues but it's too soon to really make any conclusions.
Yeah Pinkie Pies always like that, I wouldn't judge it just yet it's still the begining of the season
On the other hoof, there's always the theory that the mane six haven't fully recovered from Discord's manipulation. I'm not saying they're still discorded or something, but being brainwashed/mind raped/whatever might have left some emotional/psychology damage. (I'm saying that with the fact that this is a children's cartoon in mind, so I know this theory (probably) isn't true. XD Just throwing ideas out there.)
I was actually thinking of creating this exact topic at some point! Or as Discord would say: "What fun is there in making sense?" If this was true, that could explain Twilight's extreme reaction in Lesson Zero. Aftereffects from being Discorded. So far, Pinkie does seem different this season than last season, so far. We probably just need some episodes focused on her to let us see that that she's the same Pinkie Pie from season 1.
Yeah, I'm thinking it might be partly because of how important the letters were to saving Equestria (they "reharmonized" her, which allowed her to save all of her friends). Sure she took her assignments seriously before, but no wonder she suddenly became a lot more obsessed with them. Not to mention, her friends' obvious dismissal of her worries was probably very hurtful, especially to someone who is still somewhat new to the whole friendship thing. She was convinced that if she didn't get her assignment in on time, Celestia would relocate her to Canterlot and she would never see the only (non-Spike, who is more of a little brother anyway) friends ever again. I don't really blame her for snapping the way she did...
That's an interesting observation, Manehattenite, but I disagree. Pinkie Pie's reactions are indeed obnoxious--but only obnoxious in that adorable, subtly wise way that's been hers since Season 1. Pinkie Pie's reaction to chocolate rain is totally in character; I don't see where you're coming from on this part of the argument. She likes chocolate, well, enthusiastically, so when it starts to fall from the sky she just about explodes from the glee. Of course, when the chaos that gave rise to that chocolate rain then threatens to unhinge order in the universe in general, she agrees to help fight it. It's in character for her to love the Chocolate rain and in character for her to continue to love it even while her actions show her real loyalties. I'll agree that her treatment of Luna was a bit obtuse given Luna's feelings--but compare that to Pinkie's treatment of Twilight in S1E1: Then she organizes for this shy new person a party involving the whole city regardless of how Twi feels; then it never occurs to her what Gilda suspects of her party scheme; then in Party of One, shee's blind to, among other things, the way people are likely to feel about having a alligator in their punch. So while Pinkie Pie is a smart girl, she's oblivious, especially to other people's feelings, especially when she's fixating on fun. More than that, she never explains her fun. Given that, her treatment of Luna makes sense. On the one hand, she predictably misses Luna's feelings and fails to explain what's going on. Even so, just as in Twi's case, she proves to be absolutely right: Luna's niche is to be a terror of Nightmare Night. Pinkie Pie's roundabout wisdom shines through. Regardless of whether you accept this, I suspect the more developed sides of Pinkie Pie will emerge again when episodes that give her some real screen time in more complex situations emerge. I'm with you completely when you say you're looking forward to those ^^
Re: her reactions to Luna. It's fairly possible that, as far as Pinkie was concerned, Luna was scaring them on purpose, and was in on the whole "being scared is fun" thing. She probably thought that was why Luna chose Nightmare Night of all public holidays to come visit Ponyville. Given that Twilight was the only pony to interact properly with Luna in this episode (everypony else was too scared to talk to her), it would make sense that Pinkie didn't realise that Luna was genuinely struggling, socially. But then, Pinkie doesn't have the best communication skills. So much trouble could have been avoided in Swarm of the Century if she'd just told the other ponies what they needed to do to get rid of the parasprites, rather than just running around, trying to locate a tuba on her own. The chocolate rain bit seems in-character as well; it's not exactly a secret that Pinkie loves her sweet treats, so of course she'd be enjoying the chocolate rain, even if the cause of it conflicted with her sweet tooth. I guess it'll be easier to tell if there's been a character shift when we get an episode focused on her.
I totally agree. Pinkie use to be my favorite till season 2 started, now I can't stand her and it seems to just be getting worst. In The Last Roundup I wanted to give her some valium so bad. She was like Santa Claus on Prozac getting laid at Disney Land. Her personality is coming on way to strong for me to stand.
to be honest i prefer s1 of the series, in everything. the eps were just better to me. i'm just hoping better eps are coming. i'm not saying s2 is bad, just not as good as s1.
