funny thing, I just watched that episode on laptop (have all episodes on laptop) @Zephyr: is everything ok?
So whats with the craze of plushie pony toys? Ebay auction exceeding 5000$ Usd for life sized rainbow dash. 2500$ for a highly detailed fluttershy plushie... And hundred more of dollars spent on these plushies in smaller auctions. Boggles the mind. I Love ponies. but ... my wallet doesn't love them enough to shell out that kind of cash for them... So.... __________________ I decided to try my hoof at making one. Never sewn before, so it figured hey why not learn as I go. With the internet such a great reference nowadays how hard could it be? So I Started by finding referance images for ponies, and a few guides on stitching. Reading up definitely helped. I ended up making 2d templates of each of the ponies main sections, torso/ legs / head and then cut out the shapes on my material. (Black Felt) I then proceeded to do the interior of the legs, based on a do-it-yourself pony guide. Cut out the head and then started stiching. I messed up and sewed both the legs together.. Oups. So took a good half hour removing those stitches. Now back where i started i finally started stiching the right way, attaching the legs to the stomach and then sewing up the neck, I inverted it so the stich lines would be hidden from sight. This started to form. So now , i decided to get the head together, the body was rather rough but looking vaguely pony'ish. I was satisfied with it. So next came the assembly of the head, getting flat fabric into a circular shape was a difficult task. But with some creative stitching and this guide. http://craftside.typepad.com/.a/6a00e55007f59388340133f1f46709970b-pi I managed to pull it off. So i then closed off the hooves, as they were just holes, and proceeded to stuff it with all the trimmings of fabric I had left over. The plushie was happy with her new found stiffness. I stuffed the head. and Now have a pretty solid Pony base to add detail to. Eyes, Tail, , shoe's, Hair, a hat, there's so many options! The only thing im not happy with is the fact that the dolls got Bambi syndrome. Her legs don't support her as well as they should and are rather shloopy loopy. But im sure this can be fixed, or ignored as its a plushie and not really meant to stand up on its own anyways! Yep so that's my sneak peak at my Halloween project ^Zombie in a hat. Yay
Nightmare Moon? Perhaps packing the stuffing more could result in stiffer legs. Good luck on the horn and the mane. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished.
Nightmare moon it most definitely will be. For she is as black as the night is dark. Her voice is louder then a dogs bark! Need to find some blue fabric for crown/helmet/ bootsies. Then build tophat. then work out the wings and horn, and eyes. and tail. Man alot of work left to do
I am so happy I just commissioned someone to make me one instead of trying my luck on ebay. That Fluttershy that went for $2500 was truly beautiful and I would probably but it... for 1/25th the price. My piece could probably break quadruple digits on ebay. People on ebay are crazy. Anyway Jeepie, keep this thread updated with your progress. I've never done serious sewing before (outside of repair work), so if yours turns out decent (and looks like it is on its way), I may be compelled to give it a try myself to have a whole army of plushies myself.
It's a tough business out there, selling off creations for a profit, which is desirable in this world.
K so the head is stiched on, and i have completed the wings, one left to go. All thats left is to make a nice horn, tail, and accessories such as her helmet, shoes, necklace... anypony got any ideas for the tail?
I always liked her sharp, dragon-like eyes (d'oh, Past Sins, you!). I imagine they associated them with evil, and dragons were just based on reptiles.
Well, here's how somepony over on equestriadaily did it: Another way to do the tail would be to get florists wire or other thin wire that's easy to bend and then form it into the outline of the wibbly-wobbly tail shape. Once that's done, cover it with sheer fabric that matches her tail. It's kind of like how you can make fairy wings out of hangers and old hosiery, then cover with glittery bits. Or at least I did for Halloween when I was little... thanks, Mom! :B That way you can also bend the tail to shape it however you want
Im trying to avoid using wire, as I want this to be able to be snuggled with. something you can just plop down in your bed, or on your couch without worry of getting a wire in your eye XD Speaking of eyes, i just drew up some quick eyes with colored penicl and a permenant marker, also started test fitting garments... here you go. the eyes are kinda small. just to get an idea. The helmet is going to be hard to do. getting the curves right!
It's coming together well. I saw that Fluttershy that went for 2475 on ebay. Absolutely phenomenal workmanship. I have never seen a plushie that was so dead accurate to the animated character before. Plushies aren't my thing but I appreciate fine workmanship in ANY craft. I would say that one is well worth the high price...provided it remains one of a kind. If someone made Luna to the same level of detail and quality, I would not be at all surprised if it went for considerably MORE than 5000 dollars. Even 10,000 would not startle me too much.
