So a couple of days ago, the askprincessmolestia tumblr was finally taken down by JJ (The creator of Princess Molestia) after a very long battle with many bronies who thought it promoted rape culture and was overall just a bad thing. My question is: Was it really doing anything wrong? Yes, we all know that molestation/rape is bad, but so was 9/11, the Holocaust, Charles Manson, and Charlie Sheen, but people make jokes and sarcastic undertones to them that are clearly not meant to be taken seriously all the time. As I saw it, it was little more than just a tumblr account that made a fictional character have an alternate personality to the one we knew that was not really meant to be taken seriously, given the context of a lot of the situations and dialogue in said comics. Then again, I didn't make this thread just to have my say on it. What are you guys' thoughts on the matter? Was it justified to have an Anti-Molestia movement? Was it blown out of proportion entirely? Did any of it really need to happen? Did Molestia, in your eyes, promote Rape Culture as some bronies would try to have you believe? Please leave your (Mature) feedback in the comments below. (For those unaware, rape culture is a concept which links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which prevalent attitudes and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape.)
Edit: Apparently, the blog had to be taken down because of Hasbro pressuring Tumblr to remove it, rather than other users. It makes more sense anyway. Still, very sad to see it go. I've saved many of its posts for all of the laughs.
I personally think people need to calm the hell down. There is no reason for these White Knights to get so riled up over almost nothing. Yes, rape is an awful, awful, awful thing that can happen to anyone. No, massive crusades against fictional rape stuff is not needed. Then again, a lot of on Tumblr over reacts to every damn thing.
JJ already stated in his personal blog that APM is gone for good. However, his decision to end the blog had absolutely nothing to do with the DWM drama. He decided to end it because he wanted to work on other projects, and felt like he needed a clean break.
I sincerely hope it's coming back as well. Digibrony made a good point about the blog, which I will now paraphrase. Something to the effect of "The blog does not promote rape, because the 'victims' in the blog suffer little more than embarrasment from Molly's musings. This is a fictional setting, and so the rules are different here. She is not raping anyone, because the victims are not unwilling." My take is that a lot of bronies are insecure about the "clop" culture that no doubt exists within our fandom. And because of that, they try to get rid of said content. Now, I can definitely be wrong! I definitely would vote White Knight gone to far.
Even though he said that, I highly doubt that's true. If I were a content creator of something that big with a huge anti-following of it that could follow me around through other projects I create, I'd get rid of it specifically for that reason so it doesn't follow me around wherever I go.
I won't link to the blog itself, due to the fact that it's NSFW, but I really doubt that someone whose entire body of work consists mostly of explicit and suggestive comics let himself get bullied by by a compulsive liar and her pack of white-knighting idiots.
Aw, Princess Molestia was one of my favorites. I has a sad now. I think they're a bunch of spoiled people who only want to live in a PG world where nothing bad will ever happen which I find to be highly boring. Summary- Hey, I found your tumblr by accident and am offended by its contents because I don't know how to press the back button or how to avoid such things in the future because I am completely inept at using computers and am a hyper sensitive little ██████ and have to complain about everything until I get my way. Remove your content at once. I think I'll keep it up. Oh, well I guess I'll get a large group of people together to campaign against you until you finally do decide to remove it. And so began the war of attrition between one person versus many. (My opinion of their opinions and actions) Not really, but it was inevitable. I partly hope they decide to take on 4chan next since they seemed so dead set on purging the internet of its darkness, I think that would be more amusing to watch. No more than Payday inspires me to get together with 3 guys to commit armed robbery.
I suppose it'd come down too how great the opposition really was, if he was getting even more personal messages on top of the public attacking. He may have closed it not because of being bullied, but maybe he had concluded that there were less people who enjoy his blog and supported than who don't and decided it to not be worth his time anymore. Either way, I'm sure it was exhausting to wake up to it everyday. People gotta chill yo.
I hope this doesn't affect the Facebook feed from Molestia stuff, the posts are hilarious and brighten my day damn it! Free speech is supposed to protect parody and satire so what up with this copyright nonsense! Companies that attack fan sites over copyright bs piss me off, like George Lucas who tried to sue every Star Wars fan that made a fan page back when the internet was young. Boo These people, Fie Fie on Them! Fie I say!
It was entertaining at some points but I could tell by the amount of Gamer Luna stuff that ended up happening that the creator was interested in doing other stuff, and that Molestia was just a fun little distraction that got bigger than anticipated. It's disappointing to see it had to go away completely, as it was fun to go back and read through it on occasion. If someone has a folder with all the images from it, I wouldn't mind picking it up- though I could probably find a torrent if I were to look, I suppose...
I get why JJ doesn't want to do any more with it, PM had run her course. However, the thing I find silly is the DWM sites going on and on about the rage from the bronies over this. So, I went and tried to find people raging about it. I saw one thread on /mlp/ with maybe 12 replies and a majority of those were "I don't care" replies. I wonder how many of the people that wailed against how bad it was have actually ever ready any of them?
*Shrugs* Everyone was pretty damn stupid about everything, as usual. Gone??? Gone. There's already a ton of knockoff Molestia blogs. Very mature. And the Femists are all like; "YOU SH**BAGS ARE ALL SCUM AND WE WON HAHAHA IN YOUR FACE!"
Our fandom got angry that Derpy sounded male, Vinyl's Eyes weren't bright red, and Twilight becoming an Alicorn. I expected a handful of over-zealous individuals finding yet another thing to vent there need to feel like an activist and hammer at the #DownWithMolestia thing. It's sad really, I actual read the tumblr... I have yet to find any rape joke in it except the name (And that was used before the tumblr) But whatever, I am not going to put any energy into getting angry about it, it's not worth my time.
I didn't personally care much for said blog, but i think it's stupid that the entire thing had to be taken down. Though having seen only a fraction of the blogposts, i can understand why some people may have viewed it as offensive.
That is not free speech that is fair use. I also hardly think Molestia counted as satire or parody since for it to be either of those things it has to at least also be commentary, mostly on the work itself. The blog was really not much more than using a copyrighted character to make rape jokes and another copyright character to act as a mouthpiece of JJ's opinions on the gaming world. Free speech is your protection that the government won't silence you for things it doesn't like (though I think there are exceptions like when what you say puts people in deliberate dangerous situations like yelling fire in a movie theater). So you can say whatever you want about President Obama and he can't send in Seal Team 6 to take you out for that. Personally I'm glad it's gone. It did glorify rape culture and perpetuated a pretty big social issue using a little girl's cartoon which isn't so much ironic as it is kind of sick. I don't agree with how some people chose to express their opinions on both sides of the argument but problematic issues should not be as accepted as much as the brony community had accepted with this one.
I think this is the second thread I've seen about this, and my opinion hasn't changed since then. People need to stop getting their panties in a wad over every little thing, and more to the point, should not be trying to foist their overzealous opinions on other people. If you don't want to look at something on the internet, you don't have to.
