Pinkie Pie finds a new musical instrument to play, the Yovidaphone, but she sucks at playing it. Can the other five break it down to Pinkie without hurting her feelings? Will Pinkie get better at playing the Yovidaphone? And what roles will the Yak play in this episode?
I don't think I've ever said this about MLP before but there really wasn't anything about this episode that I liked. Pinkie seemed very inconsiderate and I think that the moral of "do what makes you happy" should've been followed by "but do it in a more nondisruptive way." When I was a kid, I enjoyed making a lot of noise when I played. I often got in trouble for it and eventually learned that what I was doing was getting on people's nerves. As a musician, I also know that when you first learn an instrument, you're gonna suck and likely for a long time. However, regardless of whether she was good or not, playing loud music while others are trying to work or sleep is rude and inconsiderate. I mean, blasting rock and heavy metal while I'm driving makes me happy but I wouldn't drive through a housing development at 3:00 in the morning listening to Slayer at full volume. Not a very good message for kids to be as loud and wild as they want to when it's not appropriate. Time and place. Also, music lessons would've been a major help too. I hate to do this but I have to give this episode an overall score of 0/10.
Except Pinkie was in full Pinkamena mode AND refused to go back to Ponyville. While this in and of itself is bad, there's something to consider here: the Rainbow of Harmony. Honesty, Loyalty, Generosity, Kindness, Magic...and Laughter. Without Laughter, there is no Rainbow of Harmony. Without the Rainbow of Harmony, Equestria is left defenseless. Those who want to "sleep or work" will want to suck it up if they don't want to get killed by the next eldritch abomination that threatens Equestria. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Loud Yovidaphone music equals not getting killed by Tirek or the Windigos or Chrysalis or whatever else.
Would you "just suck it up" if I was blasting my guitar at full volume right outside of your window? How about if I came to your workplace and screamed in your ear all day? The needs of the many may outweigh the needs of the few but they definitely outweigh the WANTS of the one. Ponies need to sleep and work. Pinkie doesn't NEED to blast loud music. I think you may have contradicted yourself a bit. Loud music would do nothing to deter the villains of the show. Also, moping until you get your way is definitely not a good message for kids.
Fair enough. I think the issue here is that they didn't say "you should only play the Yovidaphone in private", they said "you shouldn't play the Yovidaphone, period". They went to an extreme, when it would have been better if they explained to Pinkie that there's a time and place for everything.
Yeah, Pinkie didn't learn anything. I learned that she's kinda a jerk. Like a big jerk that didn't consider how her actions affected the other ponies at all and then moped when they complained about it... As you stated above, the message could have been delivered better. Get lessons, play in private. Don't go to a pony's house at night and play. But worst of all, when she left she abandoned her pet, Gummy. People who move and abandon pets are awful people and wow that made her move way down the list of ranked ponies. Like down by Starlight Glimmer awful. Actually, she never abandoned a pet. Pinkie yeah...... they should have never made this episode.
On that last point, remember that Pinkie lives with the Cakes, so presumably she tasked the Cakes with taking care of Gummy. But then again, this creates the plot hole of the Cakes (that are far better parental figures for Pinkie than her actual parents) not caring that Pinkie is leaving Ponyville and moving to YakYakistan.
