I used to play competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! when I was around 13 years old. I would go on road trips with my Dad and play in regional tournaments, at which I was introduced to a new mindset that would become my paradigm of gaming for the next few years, and still is to a degree.

I was told that it was a waste of entry money, card money, etc. to not do what the top percentage of players were doing. To not "net-deck" and simply copy "deck A" that won "tournament B" and play with "strategy C" against "deck D". When I moved onto Magic: the Gathering, this was my mindset...and I actually made a good bit of money from local tournaments and side events at regional gatherings. I had to quit Magic because I was going away to college and it became too much of a weight on my budget, but I still carry the competitive mindset.

I used to play the Pokemon DS games. I've been trying to enjoy White version lately, but I just...can't. I quit because I felt what I still feel - I can't just enjoy the universe, it's all about whether or not my EV trained and IV bred creature can beat another one, even though there are no stakes on the line. I tried playing RuneScape, an MMORPG, for a few months. It was the same deal - there is no fun in it, just grinding in order to reach goals the most efficient way in order to make a profit.

It's no fun this way...and that's why I enjoy pen and paper RPGs...there is no "metagame", just what is relevant to the campaign. I just wonder if anyone has been here and has ever shaken it, and even if not, if I should just stick to single player games and games that require you to hone a skill and not simply buy the best components or grind to an ultimate goal?

    Dude! you too.

I used to be competitive in yu-gi-oh. I played for a while and then stopped because I wanted to win to much. I wasted to much money. About 2 years ago. I got into it again and same thing happened.

Pokemon wasn't as bad, but I can't battle people online. I just have to win. This gets bad when I'm at work. I co-worker mentioned hyper beam killing my Raichu in one hit. I started on about IVs and EVs.

My only way past it was to just stop for a while. I can play the yu gi oh card games on my DS without getting obsessive with making the best deck. I can't do that with pokemon though. Random encounters drive me crazy and eggs hatching with wrong natures still annoys me.

Your Argument is Invalid and on Fire.

    Anyways
I'm not too competitive unless it's in Marvel or Street Fighter.

Try button smashing in Street Fighter and see how far it gets you in a competitive scene.

That's right. You'll be A. Booed off the stage, and B. never get anywhere.

I played competetive card games for a while. The trick I've learned over the years (I still play for this reason) is to not care if you win or lose. Have fun, and joke with the people you're playing with. I use it all as an excuse to socialize, even when I'm winning. I try my best, and I have a great time.

I actually think Magic is my favorite card game. Pretty colors.

It's called 'Hype'. If you lame something out, fans of the game are going to be pretty mad.

Do you know how many players booed Viscant after he won EVO with Phoenix? She was drastically overpowered and he won with her. It's called meeting expectations... and some people refuse to do so.

    Wait what? Hype? OP?

I'm lost. I watched a race done on Forza 3. 1st and 2nd were so close the whole race. It was 2V2 the 2nd place guys team mate jumped part of the track wrecking the 1st place guy. They called that fair. The guy got screwed out od winning because of that.

Stuff like that? Is that what were now talking about?

Fighting games can become pure art in the hands of a seasoned pro. I've never been any good at them. Even something like Smash Bros. I was the guy who would climb as high as I could and spam the special attack at anyone who came near me. Which got me heckled, of course.

There's a reason I'm a solitary gamer in general. Competitive gaming just takes itself too seriously. I mean, who honestly gives a crap if you can pull off some absurd Street Fighter combo?

That said, I have to admit, playing Bully with a buddy was an extremely fun experience. Even if it was just juvenile stuff like seeing who could run from the school authorities the longest after assaulting the principal with stink bombs and fire crackers.

    "...you had to be there."

I'll say. Still, it was a very well-executed finish.

By the way, WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE VIDEO FROM? That guy is really creaming those poor fellows.

Co-op games are, I think, the best form of competition. You compete by seeing who kicks the most butt.

    Played Starcraft II competitively.
I don't normally have a competitive mind at all, it usually brings on unnecessary stress and stuff, but Playing this in leagues was fun, and I won a lot.
