Before you vote, i know you all must be thinking this:

But hear me out first, will ya? :derpe:

The thing is, i've been thinking about writing a fanfic for days, and there's an amazing story in my head just waiting to burst out. There are days when i'm at work, i get distracted because i'm thinking about how i would start writing it. The problem is that i'm also extremely lazy, and in the past other fanfics i wrote ended up un-finished and forgotten, and i keep getting the feeling this won't be any different. I feel like writing it at first, but eventually i get too bored with it to finish it. :sigh:

Give it a shot - we'll all encourage you to finish. Or nag, depending on your view.

Depends on your goals with it. I'd like mine to end up on EQD at some point. However, the way the pre-readers give feedback, it's hard to discern what exactly they see wrong with it. Ponychan's feedback tends to be very depth. They insist upon your writing being at the level of a published novel, but they're very helpful in actually learning to write properly, if you can handle the critique. Not all of it is useful, though.

Start writing and see where you end up. Afterwards, pass through it until you're satisfied. I would love to start writing my next piece, but I've resolved to finish editing The Quiet Place and simply jot down ideas for the next part. Plus I have my old shipping fic to re-write. You just have to prioritize and force yourself into the mood to do it. I rushed my last chapter's edit a few days early because I didn't feel like doing anything else. I might do the same for the next chapter.

Anyway, just push yourself into finishing it once you start.

Sure, go for it. No one's stopping you. Just make sure that you don't stop halfway in making the fanfic.

I might just go ahead and maybe just maybe...go for a Derpy Hooves "Muffins" grimdark fanfic.

*Then again...I already made it with only 2-3 sentences.*

It really depend on what you plan on writing, and your patience with it.

In any case, you should at least give it a go. You lose nothing if you abandon it, are entertained while writing it, and if it's good, might as well publish.

Oh, and, as fanfic moderator in EP I am obliged to support this, to promote literary enlightenment for ALL of the denizens of this world!

    Well i'm convinced. :p

I'll at least give it a try, write a few chapters, and see where it gets me. Or maybe just write the whole thing before i post it.

Go for it, I did mine on Monty Python and the Holy Grail using the MLP:FIM characters and honestly, I had no Idea how well the characters actually fit with the story. Do it, you'll love MLP even more when you do

Don't start anything you can't finish - I would be wiser to abide by those words, but I am not. Simply put, if you don't see yourself committing to a full story don't commit at to it at all.

Or I suppose you can outline everything first so you see where the fic is going to go. I think any proper work of literature must have some sort of plan behind it so that ideas don't get lost or the writing gets sidetracked.

I encourage the proliferation of pony media, including fan fiction, so I hope you consider writing something whenever you feel comfortable with it. I myself already have several ideas and have written some down for future reference - I may make them something others can enjoy someday.

You could start with a one-shot fic and see where that goes. I have never written one since I like multi-part stories. Quiet Place is to be 14 chapters total. The story after, I don't know. My ship-fic is currently at 11, I think, but it needs a rewrite.

I plan for longer pieces, so you need to gauge how long you want yours to be.

I've written stories before, so there's no need to start off small. :derpe:

Anyway, i just finished writing the chapter summaries, so i have some guidelines to follow while writing. I've never actually done that before, and for my previous fanfics i just came up with stuff to write on the spot, so maybe that's why i got tired of them quickly. Since i've got a steady writing plan now, i have a good feeling i might be able to finish the fanfic for once, but i won't be posting anything until i've finished the entire thing.
However, some of you may be lucky enough to proofread a chapter when i finish one. I mean... if that's what you like, of course... <-- we really need an actual shy Fluttershy smiley... :(

I actually don't use chapter summaries. I tend to add stuff in later revisions as I get more ideas. Some chapters can cover a point or a topic easier. The names of my chapters cover an idea or a reference in regards to something going. "The Joker & The Thief" is an obvious multi-reference, but the title applies to several characters in said chapter. A future chapter to be edited is called "The Ethereal Divide" and the Epilogue chapter is self titled to the fic, though the actual meaning an idea shifts over the course of the story and its an opinion of other characters in regards to another's personal struggle.

I usually name a chapter from the beginning and rarely change it. The chapter name itself can be something of a guideline, I guess. I have fun naming them, if only to be vague and articulate.
