I don't really think Texas could really thrive on its own, at least not economically. Plus if in fact they do secede, with a lack of any "official recognition" from other nations, Mexico would probably love to expand their front porch. And it would do absolutely nothing to the debt...
Texas has the largest medical complex in the world. Also, Texas is a donor state (Though, it only gets 94 cents for every dollar).
I am not exactly sure what Texas has done that makes everyone want them to leave because I don't know a lot about American politics but don't they have a load of oil there?
-clears throat- Alright, let me lay down some facts: Texas would have the 13th largest economy in the world on it's on, and we have virtually every industry within our state. Texas also has the one of the best state economies job and growth wise (for a variety of reasons) and we also have 6 major cities, most of whom are some of the fastest growing both in population and in economy in the nation. Texas would be COMPLETELY viable as a stand-alone nation, however, on the flip side, we areabsolutely COVERED in US military bases, there's 7 all within a 2 hours car drive from where I live. If Texas decided it wanted to secede, and the US decided to say, "Nuh uh." We'll probably be forced to give up the attempt without some major defections happening. Also, I hear you guys talking about Mexico, Mexico is a non-factor. Completely discounting the fact of the massive cartel wars and corruption going on inside of it, if they invaded Texas, not only would they have to deal with Texans who would give true meaning to the phrase, "A gun behind every blade of grass.", but also if America decided it wanted to keep Texas under its heel, it would very easily defeat the Mexican forces invading [and let's not forget the UN here.] also, America would probably want to keep Texas because of all the oil and natural gas we have (They say there is more oil out in West Texas than all of the Middle East.) Basically, what I'm trying to say is that, while an independent Texas IS feasible, Texas seceding from the US would have to have US consent for it to go anywhere.
Texas doesn't need permission from the US because it was annexed as it's own independent nation; if Texas wants to they can just up and say 'Adios' without any flak from America. They'd just pull support because there is nothing they could do.
From a smaller view, it seems like they could survive on their own because of their own resources. The reality is that they wouldn't be able to. They would be breaking away from tangible federal support and would need to interact with the US as a completely separate entity, thus all sorts of trade and import/export regulations and dealing with customs. It's not as simple as just breaking off and then sustaining yourself. There's a lot of factors and they're also burdened by the same problems as any other US state afterwards. There are some positive things, but all-in-all I don't see it being successful if done any time soon.
Never said that, I said America might try to FORCE Texas to stay, but the UN could step in and go, "No America! Let them go!" And America would have to listen for once.
As long as I get RT stuff Texas can do whatever it wants. I'd like to see it happen just for the entertainment.
A bunch of idiot Texans (That's a little redundant, isn't it?) keep threatening to secede. It's probably best to ignore them.
Why would you want to secede? Other nations might fight for that lil nation, and unless Texas can build an army without killing it's economy, I don't see them fending off any take overs that may or may not happen. I may or may not have been playing Civ V way too much lately. But seriously... why? Sure, the USA sucks. Every government sucks in some way shape or form in different areas. So... I don't get the point? - - Auto Merge - - Be nice now~
-clears throat- Texan here, fairly certain not an idiot. Let me explain why we want our independence; We used to be our own nation (Republic of Texas anyone?), which is a major source of pride for us. Also, while the rest of the American economy is just moving along, Texas' economy is booming. We also feel like Washington D.C. Is getting even more...Washington...And also just a variety of other reasons most non-Texan natives don't really get. And Harley, yea, you're thinking too much Civ V. Oh, and one more thing, fun fact; during the Civil War, Texas was the only state to have virtually no Union holdings in it despite 3 major invasions. It isn't that big of a stretch to say that if Texas decided not to join the Confederacy, and instead decided to become the Republic of Texas again, we wouldn't be having this discussion as it would already be independent.
