I do kinda prefer the action episodes, but I think it'd get boring to watch the Mane 6 fighting every week. I like the current mix. Mostly slice of life, with action-heavy openers and finales.
I'm more partial to slice-of-life than I am action. The former is more likely to amuse me, while the action sequences are like three scoops of Death by Chocolate ice cream lathered in chocolate syrup and peanut butter---deliciously sweet, but too much of it surpasses my daily sugar intake twice over. That's not to say I don't like action. I just prefer things how they are at the present time, is all.
I like the mix as well. The fight when they need to, but in many episodes they show that not all problems can be solved just by fighting.
Honestly, I really like what they did with Starlight Glimmer's season premiere and finale. A bit of slice of life, mystery, adventure, and action.
I think the current mix is about right, personally I prefer slice of life episodes a bit more. Mostly because they are usually funnier and also because my sponge-like nerd brain want's to suck in every detail of normal life in Equestria.
