    well, maybe Cockatrice went to Celestia's school for gifted ponies cockatrices and Celestia was his mentor before Twilight came.
    Since Luna was supposed to be alone on the Moon, she banished Cockatrice to Everyfree Forrest since Twilight was more awesome in magic. and well, we all know what happened in Stare Master.
