She was first seen in Season 1 Episode 1, at Pinkie's welcoming party for Twilight. However, I don't think she derped like this: :derpe: Until Season 1 Episode 14 or 15, although I could be wrong

her eyes were boogly in the first episode as well. Derpy has been with us since the start in nearly every episode. She did have a few episodes where she wasn't boogly eyed though.

[/offlulzyannouncement] I just watched the 1st episode on my native language (which is good, but not comparable to the original version) and she has normal eyes. About 16:35. But oh well. Another interesting fact would be how many times Fluttershy snapped out. Does someone knows that one?
Derpy's eyes were derped in the first episode, but unintentionally (or perhaps as a joke). Originally she was placed in the background where her face was covered by another pony, so correct eyes would be pointless because you would not see them. But a change in the positioning revealed her eyes, but no one on the design team noticed (or maybe they did and didn't care). Basically, someone spotted it after the episode's airing and posted it to 4chan. Everyone freaked out and the "derped eyed pony" spread like wildfire. Eventually she got the name Derpy (started by someone named Dr Foreigner I believe). The Hub and Studio B found out about her immense popularity and decided to keep her design and all of its glorious derp. That's why we see her appear as an "easter egg" in nearly every episode. It's basically a little gift for us bronies. The studio thought it would be a fantastic idea for Derpy to finally get some actual recognition and speak, but unfortunately this attracted negative attention. People who didn't know who Derpy was (strict parents) thought that this was in "insult to mentally challenged and disabled people." Hasbro received a lot of hate mail as a result (much from trolls with the purpose of seeing Derpy removed for their own amusement) The following is rumor and speculation: After the massive attack of hate and troll mail, "The Last Roundup" mysteriously disappeared from iTunes (and still has not returned). Bronies everywhere flipped out assuming the worse, thinking that Derpy will never return. I see this to be false. You can still stream The Last Roundup on hubworld and it's the featured video on mylittlepony.com (Hasbro's official site). If Derpy was such an "insulting" character, Hasbro would not have the episodes on their websites, and would have already released a public announcement stating "We are very sorry for the blahblahblah." The way I see it is that since the name "Derpy" is not copyright Hasbro, their lawyers needed some time to look into whether or not they can safely use the name without being sued. Since Derpy was essentially started by Bronies, I don't see a lawsuit possible, but Hasbro still needs to make sure. So I believe we will continue to see our beloved Derpy!
Yeah, just read all of that on the knowyourmeme's post. And they made her canon... I wish more corporations would actually acknowledge its fans taste. Btw, it seems March 1st is actually derpy day! Do not forget about it!
