I've said it before and I'll say it again: Season 2 was the show's high-water mark. It had the best villains, the best songs, most of the best episodes, and the best opening stretch of episodes of any of the seasons. Return of Harmony parts 1 & 2, Lesson Zero, Luna Eclipsed, and Sisterhooves Social. That's essentially one GREAT episode after another. I think a strong case can be made for Luna Eclipsed and Sisterhooves Social being two of the best episodes. Return of Harmony is still the best season premiere so far, and Lesson Zero was one of the show's funniest episodes. I'd be impressed if the show had that many excellent episodes in one continuous string again for a while now.
